VENEZUELA CASH CRISIS - Venezuelans Angry as Their Fiat Currency Worthless. Economic Crisis Deepens

 
Guess which country has recently shown the greatest willingness to weather hardship in order to pay its foreign bondholders? Paradoxically, it’s the country that has been among the most vocal in its anticapitalist rhetoric. Venezuela continues to pay despite an economic crisis that would have stymied other sovereign borrowers long ago. Riots prompted by a shortage of cash are just the latest example of the country’s economic crisis. Although reallocating funds from debt service to the importation of much-needed food and medicine is tempting, the government fears that subsequent lawsuits could actually leave less money for imports.

These fears are overstated. Venezuela already faces the typical costs of sovereign default, such as the loss of access to international credit markets and a decline in foreign direct investment, even though it remains up to date on its debt service. With default seemingly inevitable, the country must eventually confront any other consequences, which are unlikely to include the dreaded seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers at sea. Meanwhile, postponing default is costly to the economy and unfair to long-term creditors. Venezuela has reopened its border with Colombia, eight days after President Nicolas Maduro closed it in order to combat smuggling.

Hundreds of Venezuelans have been crossing into Colombia to buy products that are scarce in their country.

President Maduro had closed the border at the same time as announcing the withdrawal of the country's highest denomination bank note.

He has accused criminal gangs of hoarding vast amounts of cash.

Products subsidised by Venezuela's socialist government, including petrol, sugar and flour, can also end up being sold on the Colombian side of the border at much higher prices.

 There is a record bubble in bonds, and money manager Michael Pento warns, “Where’s the 10-year Treasury right now? It was 1.3%, and now it’s around 2.6%. We’re going to 4% on the 10-year Treasury. That, by definition, is an absolute bursting of the bond bubble. The problem is this: All assets are priced off of the ‘risk free’ rate of return, ‘risk free’ rate of return on sovereign debt. All asset prices were priced off 1.3% of the 10-year Treasury, or a negative 40 basis points on the Japanese 10-year, or negative yielding German bunds, all assets, and yes that includes real estate and stocks. So, the bond bubble is epic. It is that big in proportion, and it is now bursting.”

Pento goes on to warn, “The real estate market is starting to go off-line. If you look at new home starts, they were down 19% in November month over month. There is no more refinancing market. It’s gone off-line. The initial purchase applications have flat lined. . . . As the housing market goes, so goes the economy. While the Dow and the S&P 500 have surged after November 9th, after Trump was elected, emerging markets are down 8%. . . . The emerging market economies and their currencies are crashing, and that is where I see the epicenter of the bubble breaks.”

In closing, Pento says, “This stronger dollar and this rise in Treasury yields is not going to last very long. They are going to have to reverse course. When they do, they are going to temporarily bring that yield back down. They are going to create unprecedented inflation like you have never seen before--even worse that the 1970’s. You are going to want to have gold at that juncture.”

German police are now offering a 100,000 Euro reward for the capture of a 24-year-old Tunisian man, Anis Amri, as the prime suspect in the truck massacre in Berlin on Monday night.
Amri entered Germany seeking asylum In July 2015 thanks to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open door policy for all migrants.
Amri’s wallet and identification papers were found in the cab of the truck used in the terror attack. He is believed to have many aliases and is directly connected with the top ISIS operative in Germany.
Police believe that Amri had a gun and shot Polish truck driver, Lukasz Urban, after stabbing him in order to kidnap him and his truck. When Urban saw what Amri was about to do, they apparently fought inside the cab as Urban tried to stop the slaughter.
German officials believe from Amri’s DNA left inside the truck that Urban had injured him before he was shot to death. Police have not found Amri’s gun and so believe him to be armed and dangerous and will probably strike again.
Amri spent some time in detention in Germany awaiting deportation back to Tunisia, however Tunisia initially denied that he was a citizen of their country and so delayed issuing him a passport back into the country. That passport did arrive in Germany today, however.
Amri was being watched closely by German police who were monitoring his communications. He recently sought weapons, so German police knew he was about to try something.
Amri came across the Mediterranean route (see SR 1380) and initially landed in Italy. Prior to arriving in Germany, he spent 4 years in an Italian prison for burning a school.
