Coast To Coast AM - August 30, 2015 Urban Disappearances

 George Knapp welcomed researcher and author David Paulides, who provided an update on his investigation into mysterious disappearances and detailed how his latest research now takes him to urban areas, where he is finding evidence that fits his criteria for this unsettling phenomenon. While he had previously been focused on disappearances in national parks, Paulides explained that he began looking into strange urban cases after reading about a cluster of extremely smart and athletic young men who disappeared and their bodies were later discovered under unusual circumstances. As he began looking deeper into such cases, Paulides was astonished to find that the minutiae of these events had a number of eerie similarities to the national park disappearances he had chronicled in his Missing 411 series of books.

Paulides observed that the many cases of upstanding young men disappearing in urban areas contradicted what one would expect from instances where someone vanishes from a city in the middle of the night. He marveled that these were not criminals, alcoholics, or drug addicts, but rather the "best of the best kind of guys." Although the majority of these cases find the victims possessing an extremely high level of alcohol in their system, Paulides stressed that the circumstances of these disappearances do not appear to allow for such an amount to be consumed. To that end, he suggested that perhaps the high level of alcohol is being used, by whomever is perpetrating the crime, as a way of dissuading further investigation by law enforcement.

He also pointed out extremely suspicious circumstances surrounding the trend of victims being found in water. Despite medical examiners often attributing the death to drowning, he cited subsequent independent investigations which revealed that the bodies were likely deposited in the water after the person's demise, but not immediately after they had disappeared. As such, he said, it appears that the victims were held captive, then died, and were subsequently dumped in the water. Acknowledging that this scenario sounds unbelievable, Paulides lamented that "when you read the reports, these are the facts." According to Paulides, other recurring elements found in many of these cases are victims reportedly feeling very tired just prior to disappearing, cell phones going dead or vanishing, and the lack of any witnesses or video surveillance footage from the moment when these people go missing.

Over the course of his appearance, Paulides shared a number of accounts of mysterious urban disappearances he has uncovered throughout the latest stage of his investigation. One such case was that of Fordham student Patrick McNeil, who disappeared after leaving a Manhattan bar in February of 1997. Fifty five days later, McNeil's body was discovered in the East River, twelve miles from where he was last seen. A medical examination of the body indicated that he died on land, but the coroner, nonetheless, listed the cause of death as drowning. Paulides also recounted the strange case of Steven Kubacki, who disappeared for fifteen months and reemerged with no discernible knowledge of his whereabouts over that time, as well as Elisa Lam, a Canadian student who disappeared from a Los Angeles hotel and was later inexplicably found dead in a water tank on the hotel roof.

U.S. Considers Sanctions Against China Following Cyber Thefts

 The U.S. government is said to be drafting a series of potential sanctions against countries such as China, which have benefited from hacking American corporate networks. According to the Washington Post, retaliation against the international hack attacks could include indictments, trade sanctions and potentially cyber retaliation. However, officials remain nervous about unleashing an aggressive response and causing further tension between the world's two largest economies. Cyber criminals have been responsible for increasing incidents of theft and espionage within the corporate sector, which have ranged from espionage to design theft and large scale data leaks. While authorities suspect China to be the most damaging cyber aggressor, other countries such as Russia and North Korea have also increased their efficiency at plundering American corporate trade secrets. China has so far denied any government involvement in widespread data theft but the FBI reported last month that cases of economic espionage were up around 53 percent over the last 12 months. Bankrupt Illinois Stops Paying Lottery Winners

 After years of struggling financially, Susan Rick thought things were looking up when her boyfriend won $250,000 from the Illinois Lottery last month. She could stop working seven days a week, maybe fix up the house and take a trip to Minnesota to visit her daughter.

But because Illinois lawmakers have not passed a budget, she and her boyfriend, Danny Chasteen, got an IOU from the lottery instead.

“For the first time, we were finally gonna get a break,” said Rick, who lives in Oglesby. “And now the Illinois Lottery has kind of messed everything up.”

Under state law, the state comptroller must cut the checks for lottery winnings of more than $25,000. And lottery officials said that because lawmakers have yet to pass a budget, the comptroller’s office does not have legal authority to release the funds.

Prizes of $25,000 or less will still be paid at lottery claim centers across the state, and people who win $600 or less can cash in their ticket at the place where they bought it.

But the bigger winners? Out of luck, for now.

While lottery officials could not immediately say how many winners’ payments were delayed or provide the total amount of those payoffs, the agency’s website lists multiple press releases for winners since the current fiscal year began July 1. Including Chasteen, those winners represent millions of dollars in prizes.

 Yesterday, on ABC’s “This Week”, former Speaker of the House, Republican Newt Gingrich said – to the complete shock and horror of his Democrat panelist colleagues -- that Donald Trump would not hurt the Republican party, and not only could win the Republican nomination, but could become the next president of the United States.
When Gingrich was asked if Trump would hurt the Republican party, he said:

Then Gingrich was asked if Trump could be the nominee. He said flatly:

The Democrat so-called “journalists” on the ABC panel were horrified by Gingrich’s assessment.
Why do Democrats hate Trump even more than the Republican establishment?

"In the spirit conjured through your podcast "An Atheist Apologizes to Christians", I have asked myself to evaluate the value of specific institutions that have evolved throughout Western history and have concluded that humanity has a bad habit of throwing the "baby out with the bathwater." Those qualities of Western culture, the institutions that grew, the wealth that we enjoy today relative to the past, evolved from Enlightenment ideals and a protestant work ethic.

Today's Conservative party holds late 19th century capitalism and 1950's home life as the gold standard and pinnacle from which we have descended. Assuming of course that a politician actually aspires to do what they say they are going to do.

Why not ride a political wave back to the previous state of affairs that marked those times, and then work towards positive moral change going from there.

It would seem to be a much easier task than trying to convince an ever growing "r" selected population to think logically. After all, Martin Luther was able to change Christianity for the good without destroying the institution, why can't we? It sounds crazy, but let's vote Republican!"
