Night-Time Video Captures Italy Crash Tragedy

Italy struggled on Monday (July 29) to come to terms with a bus crash on Sunday (July 28) which killed 38 people and injured 10 others in one of the country's worst ever road accidents.

The accident happened on Sunday night when a coach carrying some 50 people, including many children, plunged off a viaduct near the southern town of Monteforte Irpino, east of Naples while returning from an excursion.

Video from the crash site showed crushed wreckage from the coach which lay on its side while bodies covered in white sheets were lined up on the road.

Initial reports suggested that the coach was travelling at speed and had hit four or five cars before crashing over the roadside barriers on a stretch of road which local media said had been the scene of repeated accidents.

It was not clear for the moment whether there was any mechanical damage to the vehicle's brakes or problems with its tyres or whether there was any fault on the part of the driver, who was killed in the accident.

Prosecutors have already opened an investigation into the case, which comes just days after 79 people were killed in a high-speed train crash in Spain.

All of the victims appear to have been Italians returning from an excursion to the town of Telese Terme, known for its hot sulphurous springs and a nearby lake popular as a fishing spot.

7/29/13 - Pope Francis Refuses to Condemn Gay Priests: 'Who Am I To Judge Them! --- Pope Francis said Monday that he will not "judge" gays and lesbians - including gay priests - a huge shift from his predecessor, who sought to bar men with "homosexual tendencies" from the priesthood, and another sign that the new pope is changing the church's approach to historically marginalized groups. "If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" Francis said in a wide-ranging news conference aboard the papal plane. Though answering a question about the so-called "gay lobby" at the Vatican, the pope's remarks seemed to signal a change in tone, if not in teaching, in the church's stance towards gays and lesbians more generally.

The pope was flying back to Rome from Brazil, where he spent the past week celebrating World Youth Day, an international Catholic event that drew millions.

Taking questions from reporters aboard the plane, the pope addressed nearly every hot-button issue facing the Roman Catholic Church - its alleged "gay lobby," Vatican bank corruption, the role of women, abortion, homosexuality and his own personal security.

"Pope Francis's brief comment on gays reveals great mercy," said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor at America, a Catholic magazine based in New York.

Martin noted that Francis also showed "greater compassion for divorced and remarried Catholics, a group that has long felt marginalized in the church, and called for a `deeper theology' on the role of women in the church."

"Today Pope Francis has, once again, lived out the Gospel message of compassion for everyone," Martin said.

The pontiff spoke on the record for an hour and a half in the back of the plane that was carrying him back to Italy after his first international trip as pope to Brazil, where he was greeted by massive, frenzied crowds at every turn.

"I'm happy. It has been a beautiful trip, spiritually speaking; it has been good to me. I'm tired enough but with a heart full of joy," he said.

On Sunday, the mayor's office in Rio de Janeiro said more than 3 million people came to Copacabana Beach for a morning Mass with Francis, who was in Brazil for the weeklong World Youth Day celebration.

Security issues plagued the trip because of Francis' immense popularity as the first Latin America pope. His arriving motorcade was mobbed after a wrong turn, prompting the Brazilian military to raise the trip's security level to "high risk" and send in reinforcements to protect the pontiff, who insisted on being close to the people.

"There is always the danger that there is the crazy person, and we never know what he or she will do," Francis said. "But to create a safety barrier between the bishop and its people is insane. And I'm outside this security. I prefer the risks of the madness outside, to be close to the people."

On the 'gay lobby' and homosexuality

The pope addressed the issue of an alleged "gay lobby" within the church. Hints that the Holy See contained a network of gay clergy surfaced last year in reports about a series of embarrassing leaks to Italian journalists.

The "Vatileaks" scandal factored in Pope Emeritus Benedict XIV's shocking decision to resign this year, according to some church experts, as it impressed upon the 86-year-old pontiff that the modern papacy requires a vigorous and watchful presence.

"There's a lot of talk about the gay lobby, but I've never seen it on the Vatican ID card!" Francis said.

"When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them? They shouldn't be marginalized. The tendency (to homosexuality) is not the problem ... they're our brothers."

The problem, he said was, lobbies that work against the interest of the church.

In 2005, during the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican issued directives barring from the priesthood men "who are actively homosexual, have deep-seated homosexual tendencies, or support the so-called 'gay culture.'"

Francis' brief remarks seem to signal a sharp shift from that policy.

Last week's House debate on the Defense Appropriations bill for 2014 produced a bit more drama than usual. After hearing that House leadership would do away with the traditional "open rule" allowing for debate on any funding limitation amendment, it was surprising to see that Rep. Justin Amash's (R-MI) amendment was allowed on the Floor. In the wake of National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden's revelations about the extent of US government spying on American citizens, Amash's amendment sought to remove funding in the bill for some of the NSA programs.

Had Amash's amendment passed, it would have been a significant symbolic victory over the administration's massive violations of our Fourth Amendment protections. But we should be careful about believing that even if it had somehow miraculously survived the Senate vote and the President's veto, it would have resulted in any significant change in how the Intelligence Community would behave toward Americans. The US government has built the largest and most sophisticated spying apparatus in the history of the world.

The NSA has been massively increasing the size its facilities, both at its Maryland headquarters and in its newly built (and way over-budget) enormous data center in Utah. Taken together, these two facilities will be seven times larger than the Pentagon! And we know now that much of the NSA's capacity to intercept information has been turned inward, to spy on us.

As NSA expert James Bamford wrote earlier this year about the new Utah facility: "The heavily fortified $2 billion center should be up and running in September 2013. Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital "pocket litter." It is, in some measure, the realization of the "total information awareness" program created during the first term of the Bush administration—an effort that was killed by Congress in 2003 after it caused an outcry over its potential for invading Americans' privacy."

But it happened anyway.

Over the last week we have seen two significant prison-breaks, one in Iraq, where some 500 al-Qaeda members broke out of the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, which the US built, and another 1,000 escaped in a huge break in Benghazi, Libya -- the city where the US Ambassador was killed by the rebels that the US government helped put in power. Did the US intelligence community, focused on listening to our phone calls, not see this real threat coming?

Rep. Amash's amendment was an important move to at least bring attention to what the US intelligence community has become: an incredibly powerful conglomeration of secret government agencies that seem to view Americans as the real threat. It is interesting that the votes on Amash's amendment divided the House not on party lines. Instead, we saw the votes divided between those who follow their oath to the Constitution, versus those who seem to believe that any violation of the Constitution is justified in the name of the elusive "security" of the police state at the expense of liberty. The leadership -- not to my surprise -- of both parties in the House voted for the police state.

It is encouraging to see the large number of votes crossing party lines in favor of the Amash amendment. Let us hope that this will be a growing trend in the House -- perhaps the promise that Congress may once again begin to take its duties and obligations seriously. We should not forget, however, that in the meantime another Defense Appropriations bill passing really means another "military spending" bill. The Administration is planning for a US invasion of Syria, more military assistance to the military dictatorship in Egypt, and more drones and interventionism. We have much work yet to do.

7/28/13 - A panel on This Week With George Stephanopoulos went at each other over the possibility of federal intervention in Detroit's bankruptcy, with the discussion growing especially heated after George Will suggested that Detroit's "cultural problems," including unwed mothers, were to blame for the city's financial ruin. "Eighty percent of the pain in this restructuring is being borne by the workers and the retirees if this plan goes through," argued Steve Rattner, who oversaw the auto bailout and argued in an op-ed last week that the government should assist the city itself. "Detroit needs investment, and that's where the federal government and the state, particularly, can and should help."

"You can't solve their problems because their problems are cultural," Will said. "You have a city, 139 square miles, you can graze cattle in vast portions of it. Dangerous herds of feral dogs roam in there. You have three percent of fourth graders reading at the national math standards. 47% of Detroit residents are functionally illiterate. 79% of Detroit children are born to unmarried mothers. They don't have a fiscal problem, Steve, they have a cultural collapse."

"I find that really insulting to the people of Detroit," said Katrina vanden Heuvel. "There is a serious discussion about the future of cities in a time of deindustrialization, but in many ways, Detroit has been a victim of market forces. I think that what Steve said is so critical, that retirees and workers should not bear this. This story should not be hijacked as one of about greedy, fiscal public unions."

"What Steve said in his op-ed was that the people in Detroit are no more to blame than the victims of Hurricane Sandy because apart from voting—well what did they vote for?" Will said. "For sixty years they voted for incompetents, malcontents and in some cases criminals."

"So what do you want to do?" Rattner responded. "Do you want to leave them sitting in exactly the situation you just described. Or in the spirit of America, trying to help people who are less fortunate—whether they're victims of natural disasters or their own ignorance or whatever—do you want to reach out and try to help them, and try to reinvent Detroit? For not a lot of money. We're talking about a couple billion dollars. This is small potatoes in the great scheme of life. Or we have your scenario, leave them all to sit with feral dogs for the rest of their lives."

During the 2011 Egyptian uprisings, the military was jeered for cracking down on protestors and for the infamous virginity tests they conducted on detained female protestors. In June 2012, when Mohamed Morsi won the presidential race with 51% of the votes, crowds gathered in Tahrir Square to celebrate his victory, chanting : "God is great" and "down with military rule." Barely a year passed before the crowds were cheering the U.S.-backed military for ousting their first democratically elected president in a coup dubbed by various media outlets as a democratic coup. What transpired?

Mr. Morsi alienated both Egyptians and foreign states in his short term in office. No doubt many Egyptians were alarmed and opposed to what they perceived as his 'power-grab', as well as the new constitution which passed in a referendum with 64% of a measly 33% turnout; but inarguably, the economy was a huge factor in sending protestors to the streets. The lack of progress in dealing with the economy, the fuel shortages, and the IMF loan delay also contributed to the continuous unrest in Egypt .

It is worthwhile mentioning here that a significant percentage of Egypt 's economy is run by the military. Robert Springborg, an expert on Egypt 's military told The New York Times: "Protecting its businesses from scrutiny and accountability is a red line the [Egyptian] military will draw". Also of note is the fact that long lines formed at gasoline stations in Cairo amid an apparent fuel shortage, disappeared quickly after the coup. This led to speculation that the fuel crisis had "been deliberately engineered to feed unrest and dissatisfaction with the Morsi government in the days before its overthrow."

Egypt is on the verge of a civil war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday as tensions continued to escalate in the North African country between the supporters and opponents of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

"Syria is already engulfed in a civil war and, no matter how sad it may sound, Egypt is also moving in the same direction. It would be good, if the Egyptian people avoided this fate," Putin said during his working visit to Kazakhstan.

The Egyptian armed forces on Wednesday deposed Morsi and suspended the country's constitution, Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said in a televised address to the nation.  The removal of Mohamed Morsi from the Egyptian presidency has set the stage for the ascension of an Islamic sect more radical than the Muslim Brotherhood.

Secular political parties backed by the Egyptian military will likely lose out to the Nour Party in the coming elections. Described as "ultraconservative" by the corporate media in the West, the religious party led by Nadar Bakar is considered the Taliban of Egypt.

"The Nour Party embodies Wahhabism, the fanatical interpretation of Islam that is the sole official religious doctrine in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," writes Irfan Al-Alawi, the executive director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation. "The media have tiptoed around the authentic character of the Nour Party, with leading sources noting only that the Nour Party's program is derived from or influenced by Saudi Wahhabism. But the Nour Party reproduces Wahhabism -- the ideology that inspired Osama Bin Laden -- in its entirety."

Like the Taliban, the Nour Party embraces a strict version of Shariah law. It is fanatically and murderously opposed to Shia Muslims and Christians. Nour's Abdel Moneim Al-Shahat has called for the Pharaonic statues that are a part of Egypt's pre-Islamic cultural legacy to be covered with wax because they were once worshipped as idols, Al-Alawi notes. This is the same philosophy that resulted in the Taliban destroying the Bamiyan statues of Buddha in Afghanistan.

As crowds packed Tahrir Square in the centre of Cairo to celebrate the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday night, three things filled the air - noise, fireworks and, unusually, laser beams.

The use of laser pens has become a distinctive feature of the protests against the country's leadership, which began at the end of last month.

Goose-stepping soldiers, columns of tanks and a broad array of ominous-looking missiles poised on mobile launchers paraded through Pyongyang's main square on Saturday in a painstakingly choreographed military pageant intended to strike fear into North Korea's adversaries and rally its people behind young ruler Kim Jong Un on the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War.

The lavish assembly of weapons and troops is reminiscent of the marches held by the Soviet Union and China at the height of the Cold War. It is one of the few chances the world gets to see North Korea's military up close. Although Pyongyang frequently uses the occasion to reveal new, though not always operational, hardware, there didn't appear to be any new weapons in Saturday's parade. Its arsenal of missiles, however, was front-and-center.

Overlooking a sea of spectators mobilized in Kim Il Sung Square to cheer and wave flags, leader Kim Jong Un saluted his troops from a review stand. He was flanked by senior military officials, the chests of their olive green and white uniforms laden with medals. As fighter jets screamed overhead, a relaxed looking Kim smiled and talked with China's vice-president. China fought with North Korea during the war and is Pyongyang's only major ally and a crucial source of economic aid. Kim did not make a speech.

Kim's rule, which began in late 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, has been marked by high tensions with Washington and Seoul. He has overseen two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test that drew widespread condemnation and tightened UN sanctions.

North and South Korea have turned to tentative diplomacy in recent weeks, but March and April saw North Korean threats of nuclear war against Washington and Seoul in response to annual South Korean-U.S. military drills and UN condemnation of Pyongyang's February nuclear test, the country's third. Long-stalled North Korean nuclear disarmament talks show no sign of resuming.

CHINA PUSHES FOR NUKE FREE PENINSULA

On Thursday, Kim met Li in what was the highest-level talks between the two countries after their ties seemed to fray following Pyongyang's missile and nuclear tests in the past year, which led to tougher U.N. sanctions backed by Beijing.

Li told Kim that Beijing will push for talks on removing nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

China's official Xinhua news agency, in a commentary on Saturday, said the time was right for all sides to seek a permanent end to the state of hostilities on the peninsula, but added North Korea had to live up to its responsibilities.

"For Pyongyang's part, its security concerns are understandable and should be addressed properly, but violating U.N. Security Council resolutions is not helpful. It has to keep its end of the bargain," Xinhua said.
NTH KOREAN VETS STILL SEE U.S. AS ENEMY

While anti-U.S. rhetoric was absent from the official ceremony, those attending the event were more than ready to pledge to strike their arch enemy when called to arms.

"American bastards have kept saying they will make war and that they will take over our country," said 80-year-old veteran Jang Jong-hwan. "Though we are old, we have renewed our resolve not to loosen our grip on our guns and to serve leader Kim Jong-un for eternity and achieve unification."

Li was also the leading guest on Friday night at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang where a national meeting was held lauding the heroic battle fought by the armies of the two countries against the United States.

In the South Korean capital Seoul on Saturday, veterans of some of the 16 countries that fought under the U.N. command during the Korean War marked the truce at a more intimate event.

Such criticism is normally unthinkable at a public forum in the Gulf, where the media remain under strict censorship and officials avoid any adverse remarks about neighbouring countries.  

Lord Carey, who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, made his comments during a debate on the motion: "This House believes that Arab governments should take urgent measures to protect religious minorities."   

Seventy-eight percent of the mainly-Arab audience voted in favour of the motion.  

Among the other speakers was Roger Bismuth, a Tunisian senator and currently the only elected Jewish legislator in the Arab world. He said it was hard to protect minorities - often disparate groups, scattered across a country - and instead favoured better education in order to counter extremism.  

But his argument came under fire from Chairman Tim Sebastian who reminded Bismuth he had personally intervened with the Tunisian government after recent death threats to Jews on the streets of the capital.  
"I wanted to protect against verbal aggression," he countered when Sebastian said he had instructed an Arab government to protect his minority.  

Against the motion was Fadi Daou, a Lebanese Maronite priest, who argued that governments should fight extremism rather than stigmatise minorities. Many Christians in the Arab world, he said, don't consider themselves a minority.  

"The government should face the source of the threat and focus on fighting extremism," he added.  

The Doha Debates were launched in 2004 and are staged before a young audience in the Qatari capital Doha, and televised on BBC World News, available in 300 million homes in 200 countries.
