North Korea threatens United States with Preemptive Nuclear Strike

North Korea vowed on Thursday to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States, amplifying its threatening rhetoric as U.N. diplomats voted on whether to level new sanctions against Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test.

An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry said the North will exercise its right for "a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North.

Although North Korea boasts of nuclear bombs and pre-emptive strikes, it is not thought to have mastered the ability to produce a warhead small enough to put on a missile capable of reaching the U.S. It is believed to have enough nuclear fuel, however, for several crude nuclear devices.

Such inflammatory rhetoric is common from North Korea, and especially so in recent days. North Korea is angry over the possible sanctions and over upcoming U.S.-South Korean military drills. At a mass rally in Pyongyang on Thursday, tens of thousands of North Koreans protested the U.S.-South Korean war drills and sanctions.

Army Gen. Kang Pyo Yong told the crowd that North Korea is ready to fire long-range nuclear-armed missiles at Washington.

"Intercontinental ballistic missiles and various other missiles, which have already set their striking targets, are now armed with lighter, smaller and diversified nuclear warheads and are placed on a standby status," Kang said. "When we shell (the missiles), Washington, which is the stronghold of evils, .... will be engulfed in a sea of fire."

The U.N. Security Council was considering a fourth round of sanctions against Pyongyang in a fresh attempt to rein in its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The resolution was drafted by the United States and China, North Korea's closest ally. The council's agreement to put the resolution to a vote just 48 hours later signaled that it would almost certainly have the support of all 15 council members.

The statement by the North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman was carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

It accused the U.S. of leading efforts to slap sanctions on North Korea. The statement said the new sanctions would only advance the timing for North Korea to fulfill previous vows to take "powerful second and third countermeasures" against its enemies. It hasn't elaborated on those measures.

The statement said North Korea "strongly warns the U.N. Security Council not to make another big blunder like the one in the past when it earned the inveterate grudge of the Korean nation by acting as a war servant for the U.S. in 1950."

North Korea demanded the U.N. Security Council immediately dismantle the American-led U.N. Command that's based in Seoul and move to end the state of war that exists on the Korean Peninsula, which continues six decades after fighting stopped because an armistice, not a peace treaty, ended the war.

In anticipation of the resolution's adoption, North Korea earlier in the week threatened to cancel the 1953 cease-fire that ended the Korean War.

North Korean threats have become more common as tensions have escalated following a rocket launch by Pyongyang in December and its third nuclear test on Feb. 12. Both acts defied three Security Council resolutions that bar North Korea from testing or using nuclear or ballistic missile technology and from importing or exporting material for these programs.

U.S. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said the proposed resolution would impose some of the strongest sanctions ever ordered by the United Nations.

The final version of the draft resolution, released Wednesday, identified three individuals, one corporation and one organization that would be added to the U.N. sanctions list if the measure is approved.

The targets include top officials at a company that is the country's primary arms dealer and main exporter of ballistic missile-related equipment, and a national organization responsible for research and development of missiles and probably nuclear weapons.

The success of a new round of sanctions could depend on enforcement by China, where most of the companies and banks that North Korea is believed to work with are based.

The United States and other nations worry that North Korea's third nuclear test pushed it closer to its goal of gaining nuclear missiles that can reach the U.S. The international community has condemned the regime's nuclear and missile efforts as threats to regional security and a drain on the resources that could go to North Korea's largely destitute people.

The draft resolution condemns the latest nuclear test "in the strongest terms" for violating and flagrantly disregarding council resolutions, bans further ballistic missile launches, nuclear tests "or any other provocation," and demands that North Korea return to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. It also condemns all of North Korea's ongoing nuclear activities, including its uranium enrichment.

The Great Gold vs Bitcoin Debate: Casey vs Matonis

Doug Casey of Casey Research (www.caseyresearch.com/) debates e-money researcher (themonetaryfuture.blogspot.co.uk/) and "crypto economist" Jon Matonis on the virtues -- or otherwise -- of Bitcoin, and how it compares to gold as a form of money.

Casey, a Bitcoin sceptic, notes that Bitcoin satisfies Aristotle's definition of what constitutes "good" money in all but one important aspect: that it doesn't have value in any kind of non-monetary sense, unrelated to its use as a medium of exchange. This is in contrast to precious metals, which have unique chemical properties and uses in an industrial context.

Matonis argues that this is unimportant set against Bitcoin's strengths: notably the ease of transacting in them and its decentralised nature, meaning that there is no central point of attack for its enemies (whoever they may be). He also points out that -- unlike gold -- physical confiscation of Bitcoin, a la FDR in 1933, is for obvious reasons impossible.

North Korea to Japan: YOU FIRST!

(FoxNews) North Korea reportedly warned Japan that Tokyo would be the first target if Pyongyang decides to play its nuclear card.
The warning reportedly is in response to Tokyo's standing orders to destroy any missile heading toward Japan, according to Korean Central News Agency. Japan has deployed PAC-3 missile interceptor units around Tokyo to protect its capital and is taking North Korea's rhetoric seriously.
"We are doing all we can to protect the safety of our nation," chief Cabinet spokesman Yoshihide Suga said, though he and Ministry of Defense officials refused to confirm the reports about the naval alert, saying they do not want to "show their cards" to North Korea.
Japanese officials long have feared that North Korea not only has the means but several potential motives for launching an attack on Tokyo or major U.S. military installations on Japan's main island.
"If Kim Jong Un decides to launch a missile, whether it's across the Sea of Japan or some other direction, he will be choosing willfully to ignore the entire international community," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in South Korea. "And it will be a provocation and unwanted act that will raise people's temperatures."
"We will stand with South Korea and Japan against these threats. And we will defend ourselves," he said.
Kerry also weighed in on an intelligence report that rocked Washington on Thursday and suggested that North Korea now had the knowhow to arm a ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead -- even if the weapons would lack reliability. Citing the Pentagon's assessment, Kerry rejected the finding and said that Pyongyang still hadn't developed or fully tested the nuclear capacities needed for such a step.
Speaking beside Kerry, South Korea Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se called for more United Nations action against Pyongyang if it commits another provocation.
He refused to comment specifically on the U.S. intelligence report, saying only that the North has "high nuclear and missile capabilities" but that it is still some time away from a nuclear bomb that is "small, light and diversified."
Kerry offered strong words of solidarity for South Korea, and praised South Korea President Park Geun-hye's "bright vision" of a prosperous and reunified Korean Peninsula without nuclear weapons. By contrast, he said North Korea's Kim, has a choice to make between provocation and returning to talks to de-escalate tension and lead to the end of its nuclear program
Both Yun and Kerry kept the door open for future negotiations with Pyongyang.
But both seemed to suggest that they were unlikely in light of the North's increasingly bombastic threats, including nuclear strikes on the United States. Most experts say those are unfeasible based on the North's current capacity and would never be explored seriously because the U.S. response would be overwhelming against a regime focused primarily on survival.
Kerry said any talks with North Korea have to lead toward denuclearization.
They have to be really serious," Kerry said. "No one is going to talk for the sake of talking and no one is going to play this round-robin game that gets repeated every few years, which is both unnecessary and dangerous."

North Korea's nuclear warheads fit on a missile, official says
WASHINGTON -- A U.S. intelligence agency has concluded that North Korea has developed nuclear warheads small enough to fit on a ballistic missile, a congressman disclosed Thursday.
At a House armed services committee hearing focused on the budget, Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) read from what he said was an unclassified portion of a classified Defense Intelligence Agency study that states, "DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles. However, the reliability will be low."
Although U.S. experts believe North Korean missiles are not capable of hitting the U.S. mainland, the notion that the regime had achieved a significant leap in weapons technology would be deeply disconcerting for U.S. policymakers. It was not immediately known whether the CIA and other U.S. agencies agree with the DIA, an intelligence arm at the Pentagon.
Lamborn said the DIA study was completed last month but the conclusion had not been made public.
The Pentagon announced last month that it plans to augment missile defense systems in Alaska in response to the North Korean threat. It also said it will deploy another antimissile system to Guam, which is in range of North Korean missiles.
Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined to answer Lamborn's question about the report in the public hearing.
At a different congressional hearing Thursday, James R. Clapper, the director of national intelligence, sought to downplay the recent tension with North Korea. He said the tension was higher in previous episodes in his career, including when the North Koreans seized a Navy spy ship in 1968 and detained its crew. They ultimately were released but the ship, the Pueblo, remains in Pyongyang.
Clapper said there is uncertainty regarding North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un.
"We don't have good detail on the inner sanctum," he said. "There's no telling how he's going to behave. He impresses me as impetuous, [and] not as inhibited as his father became about taking aggressive action."

4/11/13 - With Tax Day less than a week away, Fox News reported this afternoon on the American Civil Liberties Union obtaining IRS documents via the Freedom of Information Act that show the federal tax collection agency routinely searches Americans' emails, possibly in violation of the Fourth Amendment's prohibition on unreasonable search and seizures.

Reporter Jonathan Hunt noted to host Shepard Smith that the controversy over the Internal Revenue Service's practices largely stems from the fact that the agency uses an "administrative summons" to decide to search an email without a search warrant or any form of court order.

Fox judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano clarified the controversy to a "confused" Smith, explaining that the IRS intends to use this surveillance technique only for investigating criminal fraud, which makes up "a very, very, very tiny percentage of taxpayers." However, he noted, many of the e-mails read and collected will never make it to a court case; and the ones that do would likely be questioned by a judge who wondered how the evidence was obtained without any form of court order or warrant permitting a search of private e-email exchanges.

"How is that consistent with the Fourth Amendment?" the judge hypothetically asked. "You didn't come to me and ask for a search warrant — you just took it."

Smith then lamented that there are "so many more instances of elements of the government or authority figures in this country getting into our stuff."

"Stay out of our stuff," he said to an agreeing Napolitano.

"What the ACLU — in my view, quite properly — wants to know [from the IRS] is: Are you following your own regulations which tell you how to get around the Fourth Amendment or are you following the Fourth Amendment?" the judge said. "They have not yet answered that question."

"What happens next: Anybody they suspect of cheating, they just drone them," Smith joked to end the segment.

bitcoin specifically has *many* great things. where i think fails:

>people are trying to use it to earn money;
>speculators scaring newcomers;
>hoarders holding on to it until it is worth a gazzilion other value.
Its a currency, for trading, measuring value, you know... stretching rubber as a ruler is not good. So, not using it solely for the purpose of facilitating trading actually removes value from it.
The bubble has the size of the lack of actual trade being done with it, the sum of it's users unwillingness/inability to get paid in bc, and ability/willingness to pay with bc.

North Korean Missile Test Delayed by Windows 8

If a country doesn’t want to get its hands dirty they put the capability to do something in the hands of another country. North Korea has had help from more capable countries than their own pathetic scientists and engineers. Super powers don’t like going at it headon unless they have a sneak attack or killer advantage. Imagine giving Korea a superior nuclear warhead masquerading as a joke to slip by the American’s defences and cause harm in so many ways none the least confidence in the American’s abilities to protect. Of course North Korea pays the ultimate price with the true manipulator sitting in the background capitalizing on the situation.
