Security officials, police and legal experts from around the world are gathered in London for a global conference on tackling the threats posed to prisons, airports, nuclear facilities and other infrastructure by consumer drones.

The Countering Drones conference, which organisers describe as the first of its kind, reflects concerns that increasingly high-powered and affordable models of drones are posing new and wide-ranging security challenges for police and other protection forces.

Nearly 80% of people surveyed by Defence IQ, the conference organisers, said they believed a major security incident involving drones in civilian airspace was strongly likely or almost certain to happen in the next five years.

In some areas, such as at airports and in prisons, drones are already causing widespread disruption, but the conference also highlights areas such as at sporting events and seaports, where threats posed by unmanned aircraft are still emerging. A Turkish policeman has shot dead Russia's ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, apparently in protest at Russia's involvement in Aleppo.

The killer has been identified as Mevlut Mert Aydintas, 22, a member of the Ankara riot police. It was not clear if he had links to any group.

The incident happened a day after protests in Turkey over Russian support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkey's President said the attack was aimed at hurting ties with Russia.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone and, in a video message, said that they both agreed it was an act of "provocation".

He said that those who wanted to harm relations between the two countries "would not achieve it".

In televised remarks, Mr Putin said the act was "undoubtedly a provocation aimed at disrupting the normalisation" of bilateral ties and the "peace process in Syria".

A group of Russian investigators will arrive in Turkey to look into the case, Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

While there were protests in recent days about the situation in Aleppo, on a political level the Turkish and Russian governments have been co-operating in the ceasefire operation, the BBC's Turkey correspondent, Mark Lowen, reports.

Before the attack happened, a meeting of the Russian, Turkish and Iranian foreign ministers had been planned in Moscow for Tuesday.

The Russian ambassador to Turkey was assassinated at a public art exhibit in Ankara, Turkey on Monday evening by a lone Turkish gunman.

The gunman shouted “God is great” and “Those who pledged allegiance to Muhammad for jihad” and “Don’t forget Alleppo, don’t forget Syria!”
The lone gunman, identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, aged 22, shot Andrei Karlov in the back at least 5 times as he was giving a speech at an art exhibit called “Russia Through Turks’ Eyes”. Altintas was a member of Turkey’s elite Special Operations unit and was later killed by other officers in a shootout.
Russia and Turkey have been at odds after days of protests by Turks angry over Russia’s support for Syria’s government and their role in the destruction in Aleppo, a northern Syrian city.
Russia’s news agencies have advised Russian tourists in Turkey to not leave hotel rooms until further notice.
Historians said this might be the first assassination of any Russian envoy since the Soviet ambassador to Poland was shot to death in Warsaw in 1927.

Germany: Nine confirmed dead after lorry plows into Berlin Christmas market

 At least nine people were killed and many others injured after a truck crashed into the Berlin Breitscheidplatz Christmas market on Monday evening. The driver of the truck is reportedly detained and the co-driver died.

The accident happened at around 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT), when a large Scania lorry reportedly rammed into the market close to the Kurfuerstendamm Boulevard. The police have arrested the suspected driver of the lorry.
