Yes, a new version of The Great Gatsby opened today, a fond look back at a gilded age when the very rich ran their big pretty cars right over the very poor. And that was supposed to make you sad — for the rich, or the car, I can't quite remember.

But the point is, Gatsby isn't really accurate for today, because the wealth gap now is so much more profound than it was even in the 1920s. The average "sales" associate at Walmart makes $8.81 an hour. While the six heirs to the Walmart fortune are worth $90 billion (audience gasps) — the same as the bottom 130 million Americans. Yes, the have-nots are getting a lot have-nottier.

And not just at Walmart. 1 in 4 Americans makes less than $10 an hour. 146 million, about half the country, do not have enough to meet basic needs. And I say if you don't want to pay people, just go all the way and do what we do here in Hollywood, and call them "interns". (audience laughter and applause)

Look at fast food jobs. It used to be they were the extra jobs our kids would do to earn money for gas and weed. So they weren't using up all of mom and dad's. Adults worked actual jobs. But now, the economy is such that the fast food jobs are the actual jobs. The median age of a fast food worker is now 28. At the end of the order, they say, "Do you want one of my kids with that?"

And they're the lucky ones. There's now a web service called Seeking Arrangement.com that matches rich men with cash-strapped college girls. He provides tuition money, and she provides "companionship". It's one hand washing the other — only in the case of one of the hands, it's a penis.

Or Google the words "McDonald's prostitute", and you'll see stories about women being arrested for offering sex in exchange for a Happy Meal. Google "self surgery", and you'll see people operating on themselves, because they have no health care. Families are literally eating cat food. I mean, something is really not right when the kids hear the can opener, and start rubbing themselves against your shin.

And the older kids? 42% of recent college grads live in the houses they grew up in, because they cannot afford rent anywhere else. And it's really creepy when you're a co-ed trolling for a sugar daddy on SeekingArrangement.com, and you get an IM from your actual dad downstairs saying, "Damnit, honey, I'm already paying your rent!" (audience groaner)

There was a story recently about a Georgia man whose home was in foreclosure, savings running out. So he called 911, and when the responders arrived, he took them hostage. His demand? Getting his electricity turned back on. Now I'm not saying that's a smart approach, but squeezing people economically so tight, that they go all Django Unchained, that's not smart either.

If you're rich, you should be begging the government to redistribute your wealth. 'Cause you know what happens in countries where there's a huge disparity between the rich and the poor? The rich get kidnapped. It happens 72 times a day in Mexico. Getting snatched out of your car is so common in South Africa, that they actually make cars that do this.

(NYTimes) BEIRUT, Lebanon — President Bashar al-Assad of Syria said in a television interview to be broadcast on Thursday that Russia has delivered S-300 air defense missiles to his country, weapons that Israel has said present a threat to its security and against which it is willing to use force.
"Syria has received the first shipment of Russian antiaircraft S-300 rockets," Mr. Assad said in the interview, to be broadcast on Al Manar, the television channel of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which in recent weeks has dramatically increased its military intervention in Syria on the side of Mr. Assad's government. "The rest of the shipment will arrive later today."

Russian officials had said earlier this week that the country would deliver the weapons to Syria, a move that Mr. Assad's opponents said was a sign that neither Russia nor the Syrian government was serious about proposed negotiations to end the Syrian civil war that Russia and the United States are trying to organize for as early as next month.

The interview with Mr. Assad was taped on Tuesday, according to the Beirut news director of Iran's English-language Press TV. That same day, Israel's defense minister declared categorically that the missile systems had not yet been delivered.

A senior Israeli official said on Thursday that the S-300 missile systems "do not just come in a box" and that different elements would probably be delivered in stages. It was possible, he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of diplomatic constraints, that some parts had arrived in Syria, but he added that there was no indication at this stage that the systems were anywhere near operational.

Secretary of State John Kerry has raised the issue of the arms sales with the Russians, even as he and the Russian foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, are trying to arrange a meeting between the Assad government and the rebels. Asked about the missiles and Israeli warnings that the deliveries of them would pose a threat to Israel, the State Department's spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said on Wednesday: "We support Israel's ability to defend themselves, certainly, but we remain hopeful and remain committed to working towards a political transition. And that's what our focus is here on Syria, and we remain concerned about the overflow impacts of the events that are happening on the ground."

The Syrian government and the opposition have hardened their positions in recent days, casting doubt on the future of the proposed talks as each side declared a starting point that is thoroughly unacceptable to the other.

On Wednesday, the Syrian opposition said that Mr. Assad's departure was a prerequisite of talks — a condition his government and Russia reject — while Syria's foreign minister said that Mr. Assad would stay on at least until 2014 and might seek re-election and that any peace agreement would have to be approved by a referendum.

Mr. Assad's statements — and the choice of the Hezbollah channel to deliver them — added to the confrontational atmosphere. His statements were first reported in the Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar and confirmed by Ali Rizk, who performed the simultaneous translation of the interview to be broadcast on Iran's Press TV.

Syrian rebel commanders have also issued aggressive statements in recent days, threatening to attack Hezbollah and even the Lebanese Army inside Lebanon if Hezbollah's intervention is not halted.

Late Wednesday, Lebanon's president, Michel Suleiman, a political ally of Hezbollah, issued an unusual statement calling on Hezbollah to pull out of Syria for the sake of Lebanese security and the integrity of the group's primary mission, fighting Israel.

Lebanese politicians of every stripe have been loath to directly confront Hezbollah, which fields the most seasoned and influential military force in the country, trumping even the army. But as rocket attacks on Hezbollah areas have increased along with sectarian anger, a growing chorus has worried that Hezbollah and Lebanese Sunni militants supporting the Syrian rebels are destabilizing the country.

(May 29, 2013) - Bill O'Reilly tonight had a rather unique Talking Points Memo tonight, mostly covering Facebook's newly announced policy on sexist hate speech, and why the site's definition . O'Reilly used Facebook as a jumping off-point to criticize political hate speech of any kind, even using it as an explanation for why the IRS targeted Tea Party groups. But when O'Reilly teased the segment in the intro section of his show, he ran a clip of conspiracy hound Alex Jones flying off the handle, with the words "HATE SPEECH" right next to his name.

O'Reilly declared there is "plenty of hatred being spewed" on the internet and on talk radio, and credited Facebook for its new policy of taking down posts promoting sexist hate speech. O'Reilly said it's disturbing how "commonplace" and "acceptable" hate speech is, mostly attributing the level of public hate speech to the internet.

O'Reilly also included the IRS tea party targeting scandal, noting how "some people inside the IRS apparently hate conservatives and want to hurt them." He said what the IRS did went beyond internal hatred and was an active "demonstration of malice."

O'Reilly did criticize Facebook for limiting its scope of hate speech to specific groups, arguing that "hate speech is not a difficult thing to identify." He noted that "there is an audience" for hate speech, though he did not call out any individual for promoting hate speech, least of all Jones. O'Reilly did conclude by saying that "hate speech and those who traffic in it should be rejected and shunned."

No, Donald Trump has not made a decision about a White House bid. Yes, he spent more than $1 million for research on what it would take to run for president. But the document was compiled in 2011, when Trump was seriously considering a 2012 challenge to President Obama.

Michael Cohen, executive vice president and special counsel to Trump, said Wednesday the research document "remains relevant for 2016" if the real estate mogul decides to run for president.

Trump's speech May 21 to the Oakland County (Michigan) Republican Party got the ball rolling. He told attendees at that Lincoln Day dinner that he is frequently encouraged to run for president and wished Obama was doing a better job.

Trump is set to make more speeches that could spark political chatter, including at a Faith & Freedom Coalition event June 14 in Washington. This year, he addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference — a gathering of activists that included Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., among its speakers.

Trump gets these invitations because he "provides straightforward, no-nonsense solutions to fixing problems in this country," Cohen said.
