Canadian lawmakers pass a controversial anti-terror bill despite criticism from civil rights groups.
The
new law will dramatically expand the powers and reach of Canada’s spy
agency, allowing it to operate beyond the country’s borders. It will
also allow anyone suspected of being involved in a terror plot to be
held for up to a week without any charge. The bill was proposed by Prime
Minister Stephen Harper in October after an assailant killed a soldier
and then stormed the parliament. Critics, including the British Columbia
Civil Liberties Association, believe the law is misguided and won't
make Canadians any safer.
