This week’s New Yorker magazine article, “The Really Big One”, didn’t sugarcoat it: Seattle and several other Northwest cities are destined to be pummeled by a massive earthquake, on a date to be determined. (If you’re a loyal Seattle Times reader, you probably knew that already, based on our previous coverage.)

The destruction is inevitable — though maybe not as bad as the article’s prediction that everything west of Interstate 5 will be “toast.” And adequate preparation is required.

That was the message from a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” forum hosted by The Times Tuesday. The abridged version: Make sure homes are stocked with supplies for seven to 10 days. After a quake, it’s safer to stay where you are — hitting the streets will only lead to more congestion on the roads, which may be impassable anyway. Create a communications plan with loved ones, just in case. Get under a table or desk if you feel the earth move. If you believe what you see in the movies, you probably think that "the big one" — a mega-earthquake in a major North American city — will inevitably hit Los Angeles or San Francisco along the San Andreas Fault. But while these cities are certainly prone to devastating earthquakes, many experts now suspect that the site of the next really, really big one will be somewhere else entirely.

When a quake in excess of 9.0 in magnitude does occur along the entire length of the Cascadia zone, the resultant tremor will likely level much of the architecture in cities like Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Salem and Eugene, which is by-and-large not designed to withstand such a violent shake. Structures that do survive the trembling could be inundated by a 20- to 100-foot tsunami wave that could be triggered up and down the coast. Coast To Coast AM - July 26, 2015 Fukushima & Solar Power

 
In the first half of the program, George Knapp welcomed nuclear power expert, Arnie Gundersen, who discussed how, more than four years after the triple meltdown at Fukushima, nuclear waste inside the reactors continues to bleed into the Pacific Ocean creating low concentrations of radioactivity that have already migrated across the Pacific to the west coast of North America. Steven Starr of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation briefly joined the conversation during the second hour. Gundersen explained that the earthquake which struck the area "shattered the aquifers near the plant" and also cracked the basins which contain radioactive water at the facility. This has resulted in an astounding 300 tons of contaminated water being fed into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima site every day.

Despite this ongoing problem, he lamented, the Japanese government has refused outside help to stop the leakage and continues to focus on a radical plan to freeze the ground around Fukushima which he believes will ultimately fail to work. Due to this continuous outflow of contaminated water, radiation from Fukushima has been detected in an area ranging from Alaska and the Canadian coast down to northern California. Additionally, Gundersen expressed concern over the problem of bioaccumulation, where organisms living on the bottom of the ocean absorb the radiation and are then eaten by larger creatures which, in turn, drives the radioactivity up the food chain in larger increments. Moreover, he observed that Japan has far stricter standards for radioactivity in food than the United States does, so "if a fish fails in Japan, they can ship it to us and we'll never inspect it."

In the latter half of the program, former Nevada consumer advocate and public utility commissioner Timothy Hay addressed the attempt by power companies to crush rooftop solar energy by throwing up roadblocks to make it harder for homeowners to install, and how electric companies hate the idea of clean, plentiful solar taking away their business. He marveled that cost estimates for solar power projects that were considered extremely optimistic ten years ago have actually been shattered in recent years as the cost of producing panels has rapidly gone down while the efficiency has increased tremendously. As such, he said, power companies have been forced to quickly adjust to this new landscape and are using their legislative influence to push for regulations which would slow down the further adoption of solar technology.

Beyond regulatory roadblocks, Hay noted that utility companies have adopted another shrewd method for maintaining their profits. According to him, a new trend has emerged where customers are being charged for non-consumption related fees so that utility companies can recoup money lost as a result of lower energy use and people who have adopted alternative power sources. "Even if you are a very efficient household," he observed, "a larger portion of your bill is represented by those fixed charges." Although this trick has been practiced for decades, Hay pointed out that it has become more prevalent and acute in recent years as utility companies have become more desperate to maintain their revenue.

Jim Marrs (born December 5, 1943) is an American former newspaper journalist and New York Times best-selling author of books and articles on a wide range of alleged cover ups and conspiracies. "That's not the case."

In 2011, Obama made his birth certificate public after so-called birthers questioned his eligibility to be president, claiming he was not a U.S. citizen. The certificate lists Honolulu, Hawaii, as his place of birth.

But the controversy persisted, with birthers insisting the detailed birth certificate was a fake, and that the president was in fact born in Kenya. The issue resurfaced earlier this week when outspoken Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio told he still believes the birth certificate was forged.

Obama's quip during the Kenyan state dinner was met with laughs. His visit to Kenya marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has traveled to the East African nation, and fulfilled a wish of many Kenyans, who see him as one of their own. RED ALERT -- Massive Mega Quake Could Destroy The Pacific Northwest!

FEMA is planning for an earthquake that devastate the Pacific Northwest, killing 13,0000 people






 FEMA is planning for an earthquake that would devastate the Pacific Northwest, killing at least 13,000 people.

To the north of California's famous San Andreas fault is a less known, but possibly more deadly, fault line. The Cascadia subduction zone runs some 700 miles from northern California to Vancouver.

In a deeply reported article for The New Yorker, Kathryn Schulz tells the tale of how this fault lies dormant for periods of 243 years, on average, before unleashing monstrous tremors. The Pacific Northwest is 72 years overdue for the next quake, which is expected to be between 8.0 and 9.2 in magnitude.

At the upper end of that scale, Schulz notes, we would experience "the worst natural disaster in the history of North America." (The major 2011 earthquake in Japan was a 9.0, killing more than 15,000 people.)



The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) already has an emergency response plan for when this earthquake hits. Parts of FEMA's quake expectations are truly terrifying. As Schulz writes:

FEMA projects that nearly thirteen thousand people will die in the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami. Another twenty-seven thousand will be injured, and the agency expects that it will need to provide shelter for a million displaced people, and food and water for another two and a half million.
These projections are based on a scenario that has the earthquake striking at 9:41 a.m. February 6. (The agency isn't trying to predict the future or saying that the earthquake will definitely occur then, they just need a date to plan around.) The toll would be far higher on a warm day, when more people — often huge crowds of people — are at the beach or in the water.

When the quake does occur, its severe effects and the impacts of the following tsunami ("It will look like the whole ocean, elevated, overtaking land") will be felt all the way from Canada to Sacramento, in densely populated cities like Seattle and Portland.

What's more, the Pacific Northwest is not earthquake ready. Buildings aren't retrofitted properly and there aren't many effective emergency warning systems or escape plans in place.
