Fort Hood shooter was on anti-depression medication

Mental illness may have played a significant role in the Wednesday shooting at Fort Hood, Texas early reports are suggesting. Ivan Lopez killed three soldiers and then himself Wednesday evening at the same base that experienced a mass shooting that took the lives of 13 individuals in 2009. An Iraq war veteran, Lopez was being treated for depression and anxiety, common psychological problems among veterans. Investigators are looking into whether posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may have also played a role, and whether there were potential warning signs leading up to the shooting. YELLOWSTONE SUPER VOLCANO ERUPTION SOON? Are Animals Fleeing Park As 'An Alert'?

Although the video tells us little, concerns about the Yellowstone supervolcano have increased since Sunday's biggest earthquake to hit the area in over 30 years.



Videos of bison seemingly fleeing Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming have sparked concerns among some bloggers that recent seismic activity could trigger the eruption of the park's so-called supervolcano.

According to Epoch Times, multiple videos of such incidents have been posted online recently, one of which shows a herd of buffalo allegedly leaving the park and "running for their lives." Although people behind the discussion acknowledge there's no way to predict when the park's massive volcano could erupt, they believe the reaction of the Yellowstone's animals could signal some kind of alert.

On March 30, Yellowstone was struck by the most powerful earthquake it has experienced since 1980 -- a 4.8 magnitude quake that did no damage, but that some believe could be connected to the various animals' movements.

"Whether I believe this, or whether I don't believe the story or not, I don't know. I can tell you this story I saw this morning about the buffaloes running the street ... whether or not it's because of any activity in Yellowstone or not, I don't know," said blogger Jay Lee, according to the Times.

"But I'll tell you this, whatever the case may be, that their running away from Yellowstone is an alert of some sort."

Another video uploaded to YouTube, this time by self-described "survivalist" and "search-and-rescue expert" Tom Lupshu, claims, "Biologists aren't sure if there's been a stunning decline in the herd or if other factors have skewed the tally." Lupshu also said that helium releases in the area are 1,000 times above normal levels, and accused the US Geological Survey of not reporting small quakes occurring near the volcano.

"Herds of bison running for their lives on the public roadways and they were not being chased or rounded up, the bison were running down the mountain slopes onto roadways running right past a filming crew," he added. "They detect something vast and deadly. The Yellowstone Supervolcano is the only thing there that would fit the bill."

The supervolcano -- which was found last year to be 2.5 times larger than previously thought -- has not erupted in over 640,000 years, leaving some to speculate that a blast is overdue. If and when it erupts again, the volcano could potentially spew ash over large swathes of North America and cause trouble around the entire planet.

"It would be a global event," Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah told the Associated Press last year. "There would be a lot of destruction and a lot of impacts around the globe."

Although Farrell said scientists don't know enough to map out the next eruption's likely arrival, he did say they'd know if magma was moving towards the Earth's surface.

In another video, Lupshu said that increased seismic activity at Yellowstone could bring about the volcano's eruption, but the Geological Survey has noted such activity is currently par for the course, and that between 1,000 and 3,000 earthquakes hit the area every year. According to Epoch Times, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations also downplayed fears.

"There is no evidence that a catastrophic eruption at Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is imminent," the service said. "Current geologic activity at Yellowstone has remained relatively constant since earth scientists first started monitoring some 30 years ago. Though another caldera-forming eruption is theoretically possible, it is very unlikely to occur in the next thousand or even 10,000 years."

The supervolcano refers to the huge magma chamber beneath the park, which is in Wyoming.

TSUNAMI WARNING as 8.2 EARTHQUAKE Hits CHILE - Could This Lead To Yellostone Eruption?

Widespread evacuations ordered and deaths reported as big quake out in ocean sends waves surging towards mainland

A powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off Chile's northern coast on Tuesday night, causing landslides and sparking a tsunami alert that led to an evacuation of coastal areas.

The government reported five deaths and several serious injuries. Landslides blocked roads in some areas, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire. Thousands of people were spending the night sleeping rough in the hills and a tsunami advisory was issued for Hawaii out in the Pacific Ocean as waves fanned out from the epicentre.

About 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in the city of Iquique and officials said Chile's military was sending a planeload of special forces to guard against looting.

In the city of Arica the mayor reported homes were destroyed. The quake shook modern buildings in nearby Peru and in Bolivia's high altitude capital of La Paz.

The Iquique governor, Gonzalo Prieto, told Radio Cooperativa that two people were known to have died after the quake hit at 8.46pm and several others had serious injuries. The mayor of Tarapaca attributed the deaths to heart attacks.

Hours later tsunami warnings or watches remained in effect for the coasts of Peru and Chile but were lifted for elsewhere, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. "We regard the coast line of Chile as still dangerous, so we're maintaining the warning," geophysicist Gerard Fryer told the Associated Press.

Chilean authorities said their warning would stay in force through the night.

The US geological survey initially reported the quake at 8.0 but later upgraded the magnitude. It said the quake struck 61 miles (99km) north-west of the Chilean city of Iquique at 8.46pm, hitting a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.

Some roads in northern Chile were reportedly blocked by landslides, causing traffic jams among people leaving the coast. Coastal residents of northern Chile evacuated calmly as waves measuring almost two metres (six and a half feet) struck their cities ahead of a tsunami that was expected to come ashore later

"This segment in Chile had not broken since 1877," said Allmendinger, a geology expert who has extensively studied the northern Chilean fault zone. "It had been quiet for an unusually long period of time."

But the 8.2 earthquake, which seismologists said struck about 950 miles north of Chile's capital, Santiago, wasn't powerful enough to release all the friction that had been built up in this zone, where the Nazca plate is sliding underneath the South America plate, Allmendinger said.

"It's probably not big enough to have released all of the energy that had been stored up along that locked plate boundary for the last 140 years or so," Allmendinger said. "Is this the Big One for that area? Or was it a foreshock to a presumably an even bigger earthquake?"

Scientists can't predict earthquakes, although there has been a pattern of smaller earthquakes preceding a magnitude 9.0

For instance, Allmendinger said, there were strong earthquakes before the world's most powerful temblor on record, a 9.5 earthquake off southern Chile in 1960 that killed thousands and sent damaging tsunami to Haiwaii, Japan, the Philippines and the U.S. West Coast.

And before the 2011 Japan tsunami, there was a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that turned out to be a foreshock of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake.

A number of bloggers are posting videos that show bison and other animals allegedly leaving Yellowstone National Park, prompting theories that as earthquakes ramp up the seismic activity will set off the Yellowstone supervolcano.

Two of the main bloggers behind the discussion stress that there's no way to know when the supervolcano will go off but note that the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit on March 30 seemed to set off a reaction from the animals, who are moving for a reason.

(Reuters) – A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami that hit the northern part of the country and a tsunami warning for all of South and Central America’s Pacific coast.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was very shallow, only 6.2 miles (10 km) below the seabed, and struck at 6:46 p.m. local time (0046 am BST) 62 miles (99 km) northwest of the mining port of Iquique, near the Peruvian border. The Chilean navy said the first tsunami wave had hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake. “An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
Iquique is a key copper exporting port, close to the country’s main copper mines. Mining companies Codelco and BHP Billiton said that had not yet received reports of damage to mines. The warning said that aside from Chile, the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were also at risk. A tsunami of up to 6.3 feet (1.92 metres) could strike the town of Pisagua, Chile, within 44 minutes of the quake, it said. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that caused major damage in several coastal towns in central-south Chile and killed hundreds of people.
