The US is becoming increasingly concerned over virtual currencies, launching broad investigations into Bitcoin and the likes. The online currency has won official recognition with a US federal judge ruling it is real money. A Texas man, being tried for laundering billions of dollars using the Bitcoin system, challenged the court by saying bitcoins were virtual and couldn't be the basis for a fraud charge. He failed. 2013 Economic Collapse ~ DOLLAR COLLAPSE and END of the AMERICAN EMPIRE

Everyone is forgetting that the paper was the promise to pay the metal. The coins in circulation at the time were all made of 90% silver (I live in Germany). So, of course people who are known as being thrifty and big time savers would pick the metal (they knew) over the paper promise that was losing value daily. Today people don't even question what their coins are made of or why they are made to look like silver but are plated with nickel. Two different worlds and concepts.

In the event of a Dollar collapse, it will not be replaced by new paper currency. The era of paper money is over. It will be replaced by digital currency entered into your personalized debit card.
It will be managed by private banks. Every transaction you make will be tracked. The government can do your taxes. They turn you off or on and can approximate your location. Banks will take a percent on both sides of each and every transaction.

Fiat coins will disappear as will the coin slots on machines. What remaining cash will be regarded as criminal enterprise. There is nothing to love about digital money. Once integrated into this system, you can't get in or get out. It will represent a complete loss of freedom.The Germans who had GOLD were safe from the inflation then cashed into the new currency. Others holding the inflated paper were destroyed. We (USA) will see the same at some point.

Bernanke's patting himself on the back right now -- at least with respect to Consumer Price Inflation, which came in at precisely the two percent official Fed target. For those of us who don't eat food or drive a car, the number was a bit smaller: one point seven percent. Previously, Bernanke touted himself in front of the Senate as having one of the best inflation record of any Fed Chairman in the modern era.




Unfortunately, some other economic data was released -- specifically regarding manufacturing -- that has sent the stock market tumbling. Two Fed surveys -- one by the New York Fed, the other in Philadelphia -- disappointed greatly. Seems, producers of "stuff" are shipping less of it, orders are going unfulfilled, and inventories are being drawn down -- meaning less "stuff" production. In other words, the markets are not going to like a September tapering by the Fed.

And, yesterday marked a new development in the debit card interchage fee fight. Remember free checking? Well, that's a perk most banks can't afford since the Fed capped retail swipe fees. But two weeks ago a federal judge threw out the rule saying they're still too high. Now the courts are saying not only do they have to lower the debit fees further, but banks may also have to reimburse merchants for the difference. So you can expect further unintended consequences to your checking accounts.




And circling the economic news wagon, it turns out China and Japan aren't "liking" Uncle Sam's debt. That's right, according to the US Treasury itself, its two largest creditor nations just dumped $42 billion of US debt -- the most in years. Thank goodness for the Fed QE backstop -- unless we take the tapering comments to heart. Don't worry, Bernanke is bluffing.

Youth unemployment is above 16 percent in the US. And recent graduates are clamoring to get work experience-- even if it means working for free. Cairo violence: What is going on in Egypt?

Wednesday August 14th saw a massive army operation against at least two protest camps set up in Cairo, Egypt, in support of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. Several people including civilians, security forces and journalists were killed in the violent clashes that accompanied the assault on the camps. The military government claims that soldiers only responded with force where they were shot at, but activists claim they were involved in the killing and wounding of innocent civilians.

In early 2004, Nicholas Merrill, who was running an internet service provider in New York called Calyx, was issued a national security letter that ordered him to hand over detailed private records about some of his customers. Under the law, recipients of the letters are barred from telling anyone about their encounter with the FBI. While Merrill was not the first American to be gagged after receiving a national security letter, he was the first to challenge the FBI's secret tactics. Merrill went to the American Civil Liberties Union, which then filed the first lawsuit challenging the national security letter statute. In the lawsuit, Merrill was simply identified as John Doe. It was only in August 2010, after reaching a settlement with the FBI, that Merrill was able to reveal his identity. "[The case] resulted in the National Security Letter Provision of the PATRIOT Act being ruled unconstitutional twice," Merrill says. "The problem was, though, we were never able to get to the Supreme Court to get a final, binding ruling that would affect the whole country.... The concern about cybersecurity and the concerns about privacy are really two sides of the same coin. There are a lot of really uncontroversial examples in which organizations and people need confidentiality: Medicine is one, journalism is another, human rights organizations is an obvious third. We're trying to make the case that if the right of Americans to encrypt their data and to have private information is taken away, that it's going to have grave, far-reaching effects on many kinds of industries, on our democracy as a whole, and our standing in the world."

Whitley Strieber talked about a high level of recent UFO activity, as well as the potential danger from solar flares. In his new ebook, Solar Flares, he explores what could happen to our society if we were suddenly knocked off the grid by a powerful solar storm. Incidents back in 1923 and 1859 would have knocked out our power grids, he noted. Yet it's not so much that our sun has changed in recent years, it's that we have, as a society, become so highly dependent on electricity and our devices, that a major grid collapse could have catastrophic consequences, he commented. A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun's surface or the solar limb, which is interpreted as a large energy release of up to 6 × 1025 joules of energy (about a sixth of the total energy output of the Sun each second or 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT equivalent, over 25,000 times more energy than released from the impact of Comet Shoemaker--Levy 9 with Jupiter). They are mainly followed by a colossal coronal mass ejection also known as a CME. The flare ejects clouds of electrons, ions, and atoms through the corona of the sun into space. These clouds typically reach Earth a day or two after the event. The term is also used to refer to similar phenomena in other stars, where the term stellar flare applies.

Solar flares affect all layers of the solar atmosphere (photosphere, chromosphere, and corona), when the plasma medium is heated to tens of millions of kelvins the electrons, protons, and heavier ions are accelerated to near the speed of light. They produce radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum at all wavelengths, from radio waves to gamma rays, although most of the energy is spread over frequencies outside the visual range and for this reason the majority of the flares are not visible to the naked eye and must be observed with special instruments. Flares occur in active regions around sunspots, where intense magnetic fields penetrate the photosphere to link the corona to the solar interior. Flares are powered by the sudden (timescales of minutes to tens of minutes) release of magnetic energy stored in the corona. The same energy releases may produce coronal mass ejections (CME), although the relation between CMEs and flares is still not well established.

X-rays and UV radiation emitted by solar flares can affect Earth's ionosphere and disrupt long-range radio communications. Direct radio emission at decimetric wavelengths may disturb operation of radars and other devices operating at these frequencies.

Solar flares were first observed on the Sun by Richard Christopher Carrington and independently by Richard Hodgson in 1859 as localized visible brightenings of small areas within a sunspot group. Stellar flares have also been observed on a variety of other stars.

The frequency of occurrence of solar flares varies, from several per day when the Sun is particularly "active" to less than one every week when the Sun is "quiet", following the 11-year cycle (the solar cycle). Large flares are less frequent than smaller ones.
