President Obama on Friday defended a pair of recently disclosed surveillance programs as striking the "right balance" between national security and civil liberties following a speech Friday in California.

"You can't have 100 percent security and also have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience. We're going to have to make some choices as a government," Obama said.

"You can complain about Big Brother and how this is a potential program run amok, but when you actually look at the details, I think we've struck the right balance."

The administration acknowledged Thursday that the National Security Agency (NSA) had monitored domestic telephone data and international Internet traffic from tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook.

Obama stressed that every member of Congress had been briefed on the phone monitoring program and that the relevant Intelligence committees were aware of PRISM — the code name of the NSA's secret program to monitor Internet traffic. He also noted that federal judges had to sign off on data-gathering requests.

"If people can't trust not only the executive branch but also don't trust Congress and don't trust federal judges to make sure we're abiding by the Constitution, then we're going to have some problems here," Obama said.

Critics of the program have said that the courts and Congress have had little real oversight of the programs.

Congressional leaders say confidentiality restrictions have limited their ability to publicly voice their concerns, and the administration has not provided court rulings under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) for their review. They also say the administration has aggressively over-interpreted what is authorized to do under the law.

Civil liberties groups have also dismissed the administration's assurances that each surveillance program undergoes FISA judicial review, blasting the court as a rubber stamp. In a letter sent earlier this year to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Attorney General Eric Holder said the court approved 1,788 of 1,789 applications for electronic surveillance; the government withdrew the one remaining petition.

The president went on to say that the White House believed the programs played an important role in preventing terror attacks.

"My assessment and my team's assent was they help us prevent terrorist attacks, and the modest encroachments on privacy that are involved ... on net, it was worth us doing. Some other folks may have a different assessment of that," he said.

After The Guardian outed the NSA and its unprecedented violations of the Fourth Amendment, members of Congress took to the limelight to defend the government's tyrannical behavior.

"I read intelligence carefully, and I know that people are trying to get to us," she said during a press conference following a super-secret Intelligence Committee meeting. "This is the reason why we keep TSA doing what it's doing. This is the reason why the FBI now has 10,000 people doing intelligence on counterterrorism. This is the reason for the National Counterterrorism Center that's been set up in the time we've been active. It's to ferret this out before it happens. It's called protecting America."

Feinstein neglected to say that, in fact, the TSA has never foiled a single terrorist plot and never will. As for the FBI, it specializes in creating fake terrorist plots and entrapping witless patsies, a fact pointed out by none other than The New York Times

The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian.

The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called Prism, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.

Judge Andrew Napolitano called the situation "a fishing expedition on the grandest scale we've ever seen in American history." The government is looking for a select group of people, and instead of obeying the Constitution and simply getting a search warrant for their phones, the judge says, "They got a search warrant for a 113 million phones!"

"Who would trust them after this? The Constitution doesn't trust them!" Napolitano told Shepard Smith.

The clearly impassioned judge shouted, "This is just a shortcut to make it easier for America's spies to spy on Americans. http://www.democracynow.org - We speak with Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald, who broke the story Thursday that the National Security Agency has obtained access the central servers of nine major internet companies -- including Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo and Facebook. The Guardian and the Washington Post revealed the top secret program, code-named PRISM, after they obtained several slides from a 41-page training presentation for senior intelligence analysts. It explains how PRISM allows them to access emails, documents, audio and video chats, photographs, documents and connection logs that allow them to track a person or trace their connections to others. One slide lists the companies by name and the date when each provider began participating over the past six years. "Hundreds of millions of Americans, and hundreds of millions -- in fact billions of people around the world -- essentially rely on the internet exclusively to communicate with one another," Greenwald says. "Very few people use landline phones for much of anything. So when you talk about things like online chat, and social media messages, and emails, what you're really talking about is the full extent of human communication." This comes after Greenwald revealed Wednesday in another story that the NSA has been collecting the phone records of millions of Verizon customers. "They want to make sure that every single time human beings interact with one another ... that they can watch it, and they can store it, and they can access it at any time."

Shots fired at Santa Monica College; multiple gunshot victims
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- Santa Monica College was placed on lockdown Friday due to an active shooter on campus, confirmed Los Angeles sheriff's officials.

The shooting was reported at the school campus shortly after noon. It was unclear how many shots were fired or exactly where but witnesses reported hearing shots in the school's library.

Santa Monica College student Sam Luster was preparing for a presentation in the school's library when he heard bullets.

"We didn't know what was happening until all the students at the entrance of the library started running down towards the bottom of the library," Luster said. He then took cover under a desk before heading towards the exit. Near the exit, Luster says he heard multiple gun shots.

Santa Monica College student Chad Lazzari also heard what he says sounded like a gun shot and then repetitive shots. Lazzari says several hundred people panicked and tried to exit the building following the gun shots.

"One of the doors wasn't opening so alot of kids were panicking against the locked door and funneled around to the other side," said Lazzari.

Lazzari also said he saw a car with its windows shattered parked in the middle of the campus notably blasted with bullet holes.

Sheriff's officials have confirmed multiple victims.

A second shooting, believed to be related, was reported a few blocks east of the school's campus on 21st Street. An eyewitness told ABC7 cameraman Shawn McCarthy that a man dressed in black got out of a vehicle at a nearby intersection and started shooting indiscriminately.

Three victims were reportedly shot and found in a vehicle about a block and a half away from the school. Officials transported the victims to the UCLA Reagan Medical Center.

Authorities say one gunman has been taken into custody. His condition remains unknown. Officials say there's a possibility that a second additional suspect remains outstanding.

The investigation is ongoing.

Two nearby schools including Will Rogers Elementary School and John Adams Middle School have been place on lockdown.

President Barack Obama was en route to Santa Monica to attend a Democratic National Committee fundraising event. The Secret Service was notified but a spokesman for the Secret Service, Edwin Donovan, says the shooting is not impacting Obama's visit.

"We are aware of the incident and it is not impacting the visit," Donovan said. "It's a local police matter at this point."

Former CIA Director David Petraeus is in attendance at the 2013 Bilderberg Group conference to help construct the "big data" spy grid, which is set to become the new frontier of clandestine statecraft as Internet connectivity becomes ubiquitous.

Bilderberg's official agenda for 2013 lists one of the areas of discussion as, "How big data is changing almost everything," a reference to how the "Internet of things" along with the ubiquitous growth of social media is transforming the world of surveillance and the ability to foresee and manipulate future events.

Bilderberg's effort to push the "big data" agenda ties in with the secretive organization's close relationship with Google, which as we documentedis now merging with and taking over from Bilderberg in many aspects.

The discussion about "big data" is also likely to cover how social media can be used to launch more faux revolutions and social movements as it was in Egypt, which was aided in no small part by Google.

It's ironic that Petraeus is helping bolster the very same surveillance system that brought him down last year when details emerged of his extra-marital affair.

For the scores of protesters gathered in a cordoned-off corner of Watford's luxury Grove Hotel grounds, today was something of a victory. They were there to expose what is billed as the ultimate in furtive gatherings, a meeting where global policy is drawn up behind firmly closed doors by a small group of the west's uber-elite. Or that's what critics of the Bilderberg group would have you believe.

Yet there was nothing secretive about the start of the four-day ego fest, which was being live streamed into conspiracy theorists' living rooms all over the planet by the hardcore of alternative media, epitomised by US radio host Alex Jones, who had assembled in their hundreds in the hope of catching a glimpse of attendees, ranging from our own Chancellor George Osborne and Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls to the heads of Google, BP, Goldman Sachs and Shell.

The meeting's agenda, made public for the first time this year along with a breakdown of the 138 attendees -- of which just 14 were women -- listed such topics as cyber warfare, developments in the Middle East, big data, and the all-encompassing "current affairs".

For many of the protesters, however, the real draw comes tomorrow when David Icke, the self-styled global saviour, arrives to address the crowd at what has been dubbed the Bilderberg Fringe Festival. Police were warned to expect up to 10,000 attendees.

Even worse is when the government gets involved. The GLB didn't truly deregulate but actually gave the Federal Reserve more power. At least it helped strengthen privacy laws for customers.

#1) Put Glass-Steagall back into place (thank you Bill Clinton for starting this mess)
