Taiwan's China Affairs Minister Chang Hsiao-yueh said Taipei values ties
with Beijing and that China should not consider the issue an act of
provocation. On Friday, Donald Trump made a call to Tsai Ing-wen, in
which the two sides highlighted the importance of closer economic,
political, and security ties. Two days later, Trump caused yet another
row by accusing China of manipulating its currency and expanding its
military in the South China Sea. Trump’s tweets came amid China’s
complaints over his phone call with Tsai. The Chinese Foreign Ministry
said the “One-China” principle was the political basis of
Beijing-Washington relations. China recognizes Taiwan as part of its
territory. No U-S president or president-elect has officially spoken to a
Taiwanese leader since 19-78.
