EU in Danger of breaking apart French PM warns

The French prime minister has warned that the European Union is in danger of breaking apart unless France and Germany address the main challenges faced by the bloc.

Manuel Valls said the challenges include the refugee crisis, lack of solidarity among member states and Britain’s looming exit from the EU. He stressed that Paris and Berlin must also work harder to stimulate growth and employment and heed citizen’s concerns. Valls said the Brexit vote and Donald Trump's election victory in the U-S showed how important it is to listen to angry citizens, and that politicians scared of making decisions are opening the door to demagogues. Latest opinion polls in France suggest that Marine Le Pen, the far-right anti-EU National Front leader, will win the first round of the presidential election next April, before losing the runoff.
