Fukushima Disaster -- Japan confirms first cancer case

Japan confirms first cancer case linked to Fukushima nuclear disaster

Japan has confirmed the first case of cancer linked to the Fukushima nuclear reactor leak, more than four years after the disaster. The case has affected a former employee who had worked at a destroyed building housing one of Fukushima’s crippled reactors. He had worn protective equipment during more than a year spent at the plant. Now, he’s been diagnosed with leukemia. An official with Japan’s health ministry says other possible causes have been ruled out. Three similar cases of cancer have been detected among Fukushima’s workers. But, their link to the accident hasn't been confirmed yet. Japan saw the largest nuclear disaster in a generation in 2011. This was caused by a powerful earthquake and tsunami that led to the release of radioactive material at the nuclear power plant.
