EU on The Verge of Implosion over Refugee Crisis

EU risks disintegration if members fail to cope with refugee crisis collectively




EU’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini says the bloc risks disintegration if member states fail to respond to the current refugee crisis collectively.

Mogherini urged EU nations not to merely rely on unilateral measures to cope with the problem, warning that the situation could get worse. She also warned national solutions could trigger chain reactions from public opinion and national governments. The comments came one day after Austria announced its decision to build fences at its border with Slovenia to prevent asylum seekers from entering the country. Vienna’s plan would be a major blow to EU’s much-boasted passport-free Schengen zone.
