Iraq’s ruling alliance urges PM Abadi to request Russian airstrike on ISIL : Iraq’s ruling alliance, consisting of mainly Shia parties, has urged
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to request the Kremlin to attack ISIL in
Iraq. The request comes despite remarks by the new U-S military chief,
saying he has received assurances from Iraqi officials that they would
not seek Russian airstrikes. General Joseph Dunford made the remark
during his trip to the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Tuesday. Iraqi
authorities had earlier asked Moscow to launch air raids in northern
Iraq, which is mainly controlled by Daesh terrorists. Russia started its
military operations in Syria on September 30. The air raids have helped
the Syrian army make gains against terrorists in the country.
