1.4 Million Refugees expected to reach Europe in 2015, 2016 says UNHCR

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says the agency expects 1.4 million refugees to arrive in Europe in 2015 and 2016.

The UNHCR says it’s a dramatic rise from its initial estimates that 850,000 people will cross the Mediterranean Sea. It added that at least 700,000 asylum seekers would reach Europe by the end of this year alone. This, as Croatia says it has registered more than 90,000 people in just over two weeks. Meanwhile, the European Union has threatened Hungary with action after Budapest introduced laws to stem the flow of refugees through its territory. Hungary says crossing its border or damaging a razor-wire fence it set up along the frontier line would be considered a criminal offence. At least 155,000 people have passed Hungary’s border since the beginning of this year.
