Life After Diamonds: Before Ebola, the landscape of Sierra Leone was already scarred by social deprivation and post-civil war industrial collapse
Sierra Leone’s mining communities are facing immense challenges and destruction following the decline of the diamond industry. Cooperatives in the Kono district are engaging in reclamation of wasted mining sites into agricultural productive land to create food security, encourage wider industry adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility and promote improved legislation. The refilling of pits protects freshwater and groundwater reserves, and minimises health concerns like mosquitoes and drownings. The methods carried out by environmental foundations to recover the Sierra Leonean landscape seek to diversify options for livelihood, alleviate poverty and improve local social development.
