Gates: Obama will need 'boots on the ground', Add President Obama's former Defense secretary to the list of people who question whether he will be able to keep U.S. ground combat troops out of the fight against the Islamic State.
"There will be boots on the ground if there's to be any hope of success in the strategy," says Robert Gates, who ran the Pentagon under both Obama and Republican predecessor George W. Bush.
Speaking on CBS This Morning, Gates said Obama is doing himself a disservice by echoing his pledge against combat troops.
"I think that by continuing to repeat that, the president in effect traps himself," Gates said.
