Terrorist groups have gained control of nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university in northern Iraq.
Iraq's ambassador to the UN Mohamed Ali Alhakim says approximately forty kilograms of uranium has been stolen from Mosul University. Alhakim has pleaded for help from the U-N in a letter directed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He says it is feared that the stolen materials could be smuggled out of Iraq. The nuclear materials are not believed to be enriched uranium, making it difficult for them to be turned into weapons. On Wednesday, Iraq alerted the UN that armed ISIL insurgents captured a former chemical weapons facility located north of Baghdad.
