The survey shows 51 percent of the Japanese oppose Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe's push to increase the collective self-defense rights. Over 55
percent of the respondents preferred to see the government focus on
economic and labor issues, rather than change security policies. Japan's
constitution prohibits the deployment of any armed forces to
international wars, but the current government says a change in security
policy is needed as the country is locked in a territorial dispute with
China. Meanwhile, reports say Tokyo is planning to send troops to three
islands in the far southwest. Both Tokyo and Beijing claim the
ownership of the islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu Dao in
China.
