Hawkeye Gross grew up on the North Shore of Chicago. He graduated from
the University of Colorado in 1968, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force,
serving in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 as a Forward Air Control (FAC)
pilot in the 0-2 aircraft. He flew 330 combat missions and earned the
Air Medal as well as a Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Gross has also
logged many combat flights to Columbia and Jamaica in the ongoing
marijuana wars. No medals have been issued for these missions.
