Build up to WW3 RUSSIA Warns a KOREAN NUCLEAR WAR would make Chernobyl seem like Fairy Tale
An analyst says he believes that there is a great danger of the United States sparking a nuclear war with China or Russia over Syria, Iran or the Koreas yet thinks that no such threat exists by North Korea.
The comment comes as Russia has warned that a possible nuclear conflict on the Korean Peninsula would be far more destructive than the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.
"I would make no secret about it, we are worried about the escalation on the Korean Peninsula because we are neighbors," Russian President Vladimir Putin made the comment at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.
Putin noted that if something bad takes place "Chernobyl...may seem like a child's fairy tale. Is there such a threat or not? I think there is."
Press TV has conducted an interview with Mike Billington with the Asia Desk of the Executive Intelligence Review (EIR) weekly magazine to further discuss this issue.
What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: The major question of course that everyone is asking right now is how serious basically that threat of a nuclear war or even of a military attack launched on South Korea has actually become?
Billington: I don't think there is any danger of a nuclear war sparked by North Korea's nuclear attack. I think there is a great danger of a nuclear war sparked between the United States and China and the United States and Russia over either the Syrian and Iranian situation in the Middle East or over Korea in Asia.
What I would like to point out actually is that there has been a concerted effort in the Western press including New York Times today to falsify the warning coming from China about the danger of war in Asia. Xi Jinping the new head of China at the Boao forum yesterday said no country has the right to create regional or even global crisis for their own self-interest, their own selfish interest. That was reported in the New York Times this morning adding falsely the words in front of that speech that no Asian country should have the right to do this.
North Korea is ready to develop peaceful relations with world nations -- but only as a nuke state, the DPRK's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam said on Sunday. This comes as the US, Japan, and China call for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
North Korea, which, despite tension, is getting ready to celebrate the birthday of the country's founder Kim Il-sung, said it was ready to conduct relations "based on the ideals of peace and sovereignty" and contribute to security and stability in Asia, and in the whole world "as a responsible nuclear-weapon state."
However, North Korea's Kim Yong-nam pointed out that not every nation is worthy their friendship, saying the country's "invincible defense forces" armed with strengthening "nuclear deterrence forces" will "unfold a total fight against the USA, acting in accordance with a wartime scenario."
