Cleanup Starts in Fukushima's Restricted Zone - Aug. 28, 2015 SO THEY CAN MOVE BACK AND REBUILD!
Full-scale decontamination work has begun in one of the areas in Fukushima Prefecture that received the highest doses of radioactive fallout from the 2011 nuclear accident.
About 30 workers gathered at an elementary school in the town of Okuma on Friday. They used heavy machinery to remove top soil from the playground.
Okuma partly hosts the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The government has determined that some parts of the town will remain restricted areas where people will not live for an extended time.
In these restricted zones, decontamination work had only been carried out on an experimental basis.
But at the request of town officials, the Environment Ministry decided to launch full-scale cleanup work targeting a district where there are a lot of schools and public facilities.
The ministry plans to finish decontaminating the roughly 95-hectare area by next March.
Similar restricted zones exist in 6 other municipalities in Fukushima.
Ministry officials plan to decide whether to start decontaminating them after checking their radiation levels and the wishes of the residents.

"Abnormalities" Found in Fir Trees Near Fukushima Plant- Aug. 28, 2015
Japan's Environment Ministry has found abnormalities in fir trees near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The ministry has been observing about 80 species of wild animals and trees near the plant since 2011, when Japan suffered its worst nuclear accident.
At the request of the ministry, the National Institute of Radiological Sciences analyzed fir trees in areas where radiation levels are relatively high and published the results on Friday.
The results show that Japanese fir populations in the area showed a significantly increased number of morphological defects, including deletions of leader shoots of the main branch axis.
The study shows that 98 percent of fir trees in a 3.5-kilometer area from the damaged plant have defects. The radiation dose in the area is about 34 microsieverts per hour.
The results also show that 44 percent of fir trees have defects in an 8.5-kilometer zone with 20 microsieverts of radiation, and 27 percent in a 15-kilometer zone with 7 microsieverts of radiation.

Sendai Nuclear Plant Resumes Output Increase IN SPITE OF LEAKS AND CRACKS in Cooling Pipes! Aug. 27, 2015
The operator of Japan's only restarted nuclear power plant has resumed increasing power output one week after equipment trouble forced it to suspend the ramp-up.
Kyushu Electric Power Company suspended the output increase last Thursday after a problem was found with one of the No. 1 reactor's condensers at the Sendai plant in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan.
The utility said seawater leaked from damaged intake pipes into the condenser. The company stopped increasing the output while it inspected the equipment and fixed the problem.
The utility had restarted the reactor just 9 days earlier, on August 11th. It was generating power at 75 percent of capacity at the time of the suspension.
The condenser turns steam that drives the turbine back into water. Neither the steam nor the water is radioactive.
The utility said on Thursday that it had completed its inspections and fixed the problem by the previous day, and that nothing else amiss had been found. The company started increasing energy output again in the morning, and it had reached 95 percent by the evening.
However, the utility might miss its target to go back into commercial operation by early September.

The live-fire drill was held Friday near the border town of Pocheon.
The joint military exercises follow days of tensions between North and South Korea. Such exercises in the past have infuriated North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who often responds with strong threats to both Washington and Seoul.

Kim on Friday said he credits his country's of its negotiating skills, for the ability to secure a "landmark" agreement with the South when the two countries recently found themselves on the brink , according to Pyongyang's KCNA new agency. The deal between the North and the South was reached after round-the-clock negotiations in the border truce village of Panmunjom.

South Korea turned off its propaganda broadcasts into North Korea on Tuesday as part of the agreement to defuse the latest tensions on the Korean peninsula. South Korean presidential security adviser Kim Kwan-jin said the two Koreas also agreed to hold talks soon, either in Seoul or Pyongyang, about improving ties 62 years after they ended the Korean with a truce, not a peace treaty.

The United States, a staunch ally of South Korea, welcomed the agreement and said it hoped tensions on the Korean peninsula will be diminished.

Stock Market Meltdown. There Will Be No Economic Recovery

Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 1,000 points, its worst weekly performance in approximately four years. On Monday, the index plunged by over 1,000 points early - and closed the day down 588 points. In terms of the number of points lost, Monday August 24th, 2015 was the eighth-worst single-day loss in the index’s history.

A third of S&P 500 companies have declined over 20% from their peaks and many retain high valuations despite disappointing earnings numbers. The United States Dollar Index dropped the most it has in over 5 months today to seven month lows - losing against the Euro and Yen. Oil prices plunged, with the U.S. oil benchmark settling down 5.5% at $38.24 a barrel, its first close below $40 a barrel since February 2009.

Coast To Coast AM - August 27, 2015 ET Hybrids, Crop Circles, & Mini-Ice Age

 Earthfiles investigative reporter Linda Moulton Howe discussed the bizarre story of the alleged human-alien hybrid found dead in Los Angeles and said to be involved with the CIA; mysterious and spectacular crop formations found in the wheat fields of Wiltshire, England on the summer solstice this past June, and the breaking story about the sun going to sleep in 2030 and ushering in a brutal mini-ice age across the planet.

During her first two segments, Linda reported on the strange and complex death of Jeffrey Alan Lush, sharing an interview with Laura VanBunker, the adoptive mother of a woman who worked with his fiancé and was certain that the pair were ET hybrids. According to VanBunker, the couple would openly discuss their alien heritage as well as the different types of alien entities that exist and also claimed that a widespread government change would be taking place in eight years. Lush, she was told, was a reptilian alien that had been working with the government in anticipation of these changes. Following his suspicious death, VanBunker's adopted daughter subsequently journeyed to Oregon and ceased communicating with her family except for one letter in which she lamented Lash's passing and stated that she needed "time to heal myself." Next, Linda spoke with crop circle investigator Charles Mallett, who detailed an intriguing incident which occurred at the site of a formation that had emerged in England on June 21st. He explained that a pair of tourists attempted to visit the location to view the formation, but had arrived there shortly after the famer had harvested the crop, so it was no longer visible. However, Mallett said, they spotted a tornado formation which burst from the center of the former crop circle and rose nearly 80 feet in the air. A second, smaller tornado then grew out of the ground near the feet of one of the witnesses. When she attempted to get closer to the vortex, an invisible energy barrier seemingly stopped her progress until the tornados disappeared. In her final report, Linda shed new light on the prediction of UK scientists that a mini-ice age would occur on Earth in the 2030's due to weakening solar activity. In response to that hypothesis, solar physicist David Hathaway declared that "I don't believe it for a minute," citing a faulty mathematical function which used past information in an attempt to predict the future. "I've seen enough about the sun to know that the sun is not that predictable," he chuckled, "in particular, going 20 years into the future." He speculated that the mini-ice age claims received a lot of media attention because they are "outlandish" and journalists misinterpreted the findings in order to generate news. Hathaway stressed that although the cyclical nature of the sun's brightness remains mysterious, its effect on the temperature of Earth is extremely minimal.

In the first hour, political commentator and economist John Lott reacted to the shooting of two reporters in Virginia on Wednesday and the ramifications the event may have on gun laws. Although mass shootings often spur calls for greater gun control, Lott argued that the regulation of firearms simply makes it more difficult for law abiding citizens to be able to arm themselves while criminals will not adhere to such restrictions. Additionally, he pointed to a number of instances where mass shooters specifically targeted locations where guns were likely to not be present rather than places like airports that have strong security in place. Regarding the need for greater mental health screening to prevent these shootings, he contended that a little over fifty percent of the mass public shooters were seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist prior to their attack. Therefore, he suggested that predicting that someone may turn violent is a challenge even for mental health professionals.

Donald Trump Shuts Down Gun Grabbers Who Want More Gun Control After Va. Shooting

 It didn’t take long for the gun control lobbyists, including the White House, to call for more gun control after two journalists were shot and killed on live TV Wednesday in Roanoke, Virginia.

“It breaks my heart every time you read about or hear about these kinds of incidents," Obama said. "What we know is that, uhm, the number of people who die from, uhh, gun-related, uhh, incidents around this country dwarfs any deaths that happen through terrorism.”

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump took a different route and suggested that more gun control wouldn’t have stopped the shooting.

“This is a really sick person. This isn’t a gun problem, this is a mental problem," Trump said to CNN's Chris Cuomo. "If you tried to do it, the bad guys would have them… and the good folks would abide by the law - they’d be hopeless, and it would just be hopeless situation for them.”

Mr. Trump later took note of Chicago’s strict gun laws and argued that even with tough legislation, Chicago has “people getting killed all the time.”

Trump: “And they have by far the toughest gun laws in the country, so it’s not just a question of the laws…”

Cuomo: “So..”

John Williams -- Where's the Hyperinflation?

 Mr. Williams was born in 1949. He received an A.B. in Economics, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1971, and was awarded a M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1972, where he was named an Edward Tuck Scholar. During his career as a consulting economist, John has worked with individuals as well as Fortune 500 companies.

Although I am known formally as Walter J. Williams, my friends call me “John.” For 30 years, I have been a private consulting economist and, out of necessity, had to become a specialist in government economic reporting.

One of my early clients was a large manufacturer of commercial airplanes, who had developed an econometric model for predicting revenue passenger miles. The level of revenue passenger miles was their primary sales forecasting tool, and the model was heavily dependent on the GNP (now GDP) as reported by the Department of Commerce.  Suddenly, their model stopped working, and they asked me if I could fix it. I realized the GNP numbers were faulty, corrected them for my client (official reporting was similarly revised a couple of years later) and the model worked again, at least for a while, until GNP methodological changes eventually made the underlying data worthless.

That began a lengthy process of exploring the history and nature of economic reporting and in interviewing key people involved in the process from the early days of government reporting through the present. For a number of years I conducted surveys among business economists as to the quality of government statistics (the vast majority thought it was pretty bad), and my results led to front page stories in 1989 in the New York Times and Investors Daily (now Investors Business Daily), considerable coverage in the broadcast media and a joint meeting with representatives of all the government's statistical agencies.
Nonetheless, the quality of government reporting has deteriorated sharply in the last couple of decades. Reporting problems have included methodological changes to economic reporting that have pushed headline economic and inflation results out of the realm of real-world or common experience.
Over the decades, well in excess of 1,000 presentations have been given on the economic outlook, or on approaches to analyzing economic data, to clients—large and small—including talks with members of the business, banking, government, press, academic, brokerage and investment communities. I also have provided testimony before Congress (details here).
An old friend—the late-Doug Gillespie—asked me some years back to write a series of articles on the quality of government statistics.  The response to those writings (the Primer Series available at the top-center of this page) was so strong that we started ShadowStats.com (Shadow Government Statistics) in 2004.  The newsletter is published as part of my economic consulting services. — John Williams
