MIDDLE CLASS DEFINED - Global Middle Class Compared to U.S. Middle Class

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times all over again.
“Since 2000, 95 percent of new households in King County have been either rich or poor. A mere 5 percent could be considered middle income.” Being self-employed (i.e. owning your own small business that does not require employees) is an integral part of the American Dream. Many start out dreaming of a corner office in Corporate America, but as they move up the ladder, many become disillusioned by the process and the goal: do I really want to spend my life making big-shots even wealthier?

This raises an interesting question: how many self-employed people in the U.S. actually earn a middle class income? Since all the government statistics have a line at $50,000, and $50,000 might support a minimal middle class lifestyle in areas with a low cost of living, let’s use $50,000 in annual income as our minimum. Only self-employed taxpayers get to deduct half of their healthcare insurance premiums. You have to earn a fair sum to actually afford the sky-high costs of health insurance. We pay $15,300 per year for stripped-down healthcare coverage, which is more than the annual earnings of the bottom 35 million workers in the nation.

Bill Gates announced today that by 2035 there will be almost no poor countries left in the world. More than one-in-five (21 percent) of U.S. Millennial parents is impoverished, with rates of poverty among young Americans expected to expand rapidly as this demographic faces declining wages, vast student debt and an increasing number becoming parents in the coming years. It isn’t easy to earn enough to afford a middle class life via self-employment.Including the professional class, perhaps 3% of the workforce is truly independent.

The Republicans believe that the suffering of poor Americans is not helping the rich enough. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are committed to abolishing every program that addresses needs of what Republicans deride as “useless eaters.”

Herbert Spencer lived long enough to witness both the hey-day of classical liberal reform in the mid-nineteenth century—the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 which ushered in a period of virtual free trade in Britain—and the gradual decline of classical liberalism towards the end of the nineteenth century. It is the latter which helps explain the grumpiness expressed in his later writings such as the collection of essays entitled Facts and Comments (1902).

Spencer was born in Derby, England in 1820 to a strict, non-conformist family, and died in 1903. As a young man, Spencer worked for the leading free trade journal of the day, The Economist, from 1848-1853 during which time his first significant book appeared—Social Statics (1850). Here he worked with James Wilson, one of the most consistent advocates of laissez-faire in Britain, Nassau Senior, one of the leading members of the classical school of political economy, and Thomas Hodgskin, a radical individualist author.

Much of the rest of his life was spent working on an all-encompassing theory of human development based upon the ideas of individualism, utilitarian moral theory, social and biological evolution, limited government, and laissez-faire economics. In his later writings, most notably The Principles of Sociology (1876-1896), he drew a sharp distinction between the peaceful productivity of free market societies ("the industrial type of society") and the social conflict, political privilege, and proclivity to war and empire inherent in societies with "over-legislation" ("the militant type of society").  Alarming video footage from a U.S. Marines training drill which took place in Arizona last month shows armed troops chasing down unruly citizens inside a mock internment camp while role players chant for food and water. he exercise, which involved U.S. Marines from 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, took place on April 18 in Yuma, Arizona and revolved around “assault support tactics” training.

The drill was part of, “standardized tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness,” according to the description accompanying the video.

In plain English, the exercise was about subduing, arresting and incarcerating irate citizens during a martial law-style scenario. The Marines will undoubtedly claim that these exercises are to prepare for overseas combat and occupation missions, but U.S. Army manuals have made it clear that such operations also apply to the Continental United States (CONUS), and will be used against American citizens during a national emergency. BREAKING: Amtrak Derailment Revealed

 The Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 flew off the rails traveling at 107 mph on its way to New York. The train was carrying 238 passengers and 5 crew members and derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia. Philadelphia Mayor Nutter said of the level 3 mass casualty event ”It is an absolute disastrous mess," "I've never seen anything like this in my life." The horrific wreck mangled the front of the train and tore 7 train cars apart has so far claimed the lives of 7 people. 7 others are fighting to stay alive and at least 200 were injured. This is the Ninth derailment for Amtrak this year.

Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 was traveling on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak can operate these intercity services at speeds as high as 125 MPH. Of course speeds like this are aimed at the transit systems bottom line, not the safety of the passengers.

Back in 2005 , The man that blew the whistle on Cheney’s orders on 9/11.Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta of the Bush administration warned that the rail system today is an antique, adding, today’s system is basically a 1950s-style model. Mineta recommended that most of Amtraks rehabilitation funding come from the states in a non partisan manner.

The Obama Administration would have the funds come from the infinite wellspring of federal taxpayer dollars. So that friends like Rahm Emmanual can reap the benefits of another slush fund. Sarah Feinberg, Acting Administrator of The Federal Railroad Administration was appointed on January 9, 2015. From 2009-2010 she served in the Obama Administration as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Her actions in the coming weeks should be carefully scrutinized as Obama rolls forward on this. Amtrak has been hemorrhaging money. As of 2012 , Amtrak has been subsidized by the Federal Government for 1 billion per year and loses 600 million per year on its longer routes. The derailed train was on one of its profitable short routes. Putting lives in danger to try to balance the returns.

Hacking the Programs in Your Mind: Evolutionary Psychologists Leda Cosmides & John Tooby

 “Human behavior is the most amazingly flexible behavior of any animal species,” says UC Santa Barbara anthropology professor John Tooby, “but you can’t unlock these potentialities unless you understand the circuit logic or the code of the programs in the head.”

Reason TV’s Nick Gillespie recently sat down with Tooby and Leda Cosmides, a professor of psychology, who co-founded and co-direct the UCSB Center for Evolutionary Psychology. They believe their approach to examining the information-processing mechanisms that have evolved in the brain can provide greater insights into human behavior and cognition.

Tooby describes their work as being at the intersection of anthropology and primatology, evolutionary biology, and information theory and computer science. Cosmides says she starts with the idea that “behavior is generated by programs in your head, and I don’t mean it metaphorically—devices that are designed by natural selection to process information and guide your behavior. Evolutionary psychology focuses on that intermediate step of what’s the structure of those programs.”

Cosmides does not believe a true science of the mind is possible without an understanding of such structures, arguing that only such an approach makes it possible to intervene to improve people’s lives: “Just like being near-sighted doesn’t mean you can’t see—there’s glasses, contact lenses, there’s laser surgery. Why is that true? Because people bothered to figure out how the eye works.”

They push back forcefully against the criticism that an evolutionary approach is inherently racist or sexist, arguing that it deals with human universals. In fact, they believe their insights can unlock the best elements of human potential. Tooby cites as an example their success in getting people to stop implicitly categorizing others on the basis of race. The researchers hypothesized that this tendency was actually due to the modern co-opting of a cognitive program whose evolutionary function was to detect coalitions, so they crafted experiments that removed race as a predictor of coalition. “In just a few minutes—so you have a lifetime of experience, supposedly, of learning race—but people stopped categorizing by race in their memory systems and their implicit ways,” says Tooby.

Cosmides describes a series of experiments that were the first ever in psychology to demonstrate a female advantage in spatial cognition, which they accomplished by testing spatial abilities that would have benefitted a gatherer rather than a hunter in an early human environment. “It’s not because the scientists were male or female or anything like that. It’s because they were starting from a theory about the adaptive problems our ancestors faced,” states Cosmides.

The psychologists also discuss how their perspective differs dramatically from the traditional view of the mind as a blank slate that passively records and accepts what it’s exposed to. “In an evolutionary psychology model, the person is in a really strong sense inventing themselves, instead of just downloading the environment and becoming what you’re told to be,” says Tooby.

CYBORG BEETLES - Scientists Manage to Remote Control Cyborg Beetles. Future of Surveillance?

 
A giant flower beetle with implanted electrodes and a radio receiver on its back can be wirelessly controlled, according to research presented this week. Scientists at the University of California developed a tiny rig that receives control signals from a nearby computer. Electrical signals delivered via the electrodes command the insect to take off, turn left or right, or hover in midflight. The research, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), could one day be used for surveillance purposes or for search-and-rescue missions.

Beetles and other flying insects are masters of flight control, integrating sensory feedback from the visual system and other senses to navigate and maintain stable flight, all the while using little energy. Rather than trying to re-create these systems from scratch, Michel Maharbiz and his colleagues aim to take advantage of the beetle’s natural abilities by melding insect and machine. His group has previously created cyborg beetles, including ones that have been implanted with electronic components as pupae. But the current research, presented at the IEEE MEMS in Italy, is the first demonstration of a wireless beetle system.

Scientists have controlled the mid-air movements of free-flying insects using a radio transmitter and a miniature backpack of electronics worn by “cyborg beetles”.

The world is headed for some turbulence over the coming months as part of the final removal of the Khazarian mafia from control of the Western financial system, multiple sources, including Japanese government, MI5 and pentagon officials say. The world missed a recent window of opportunity for a peaceful settlement of the financial war, they said. As a result, several stubborn hold outs of the cabal, like Israel and their Washington DC stooges, will have to be removed through war and through the engineered collapse of most of the large cabal financial companies, the sources say.

This will result in chaos in Europe and several regional wars notably in the Korean peninsula, the Middle East and the US.

The situation in Europe might be the first to blow up as a result of a financial chain reaction expected to be triggered by an unavoidable Greek default, the sources agreed. German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent visits to China and Japan were aimed at getting money to prevent the collapse of the German financial system when Greece defaults. She returned mostly empty handed, Japanese and Chinese government sources say.

One indicator of how unusual the situation is was a joint statement published last week by European Commission President Jean-Claude Junker and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsirpas that called for higher pensions and wages for Greeks. In other words it showed political opposition to bank imposed austerity.

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, for his part, proposed creating a new development agency or economic planning agency to start rebuilding the Greek economy. To make this possible he proposes putting all of Greek bad debts into a “bad bank” or garbage can bank. This is in effect proposing a default.

If the Greeks default on their over $300 billion in debts, this will create a domino effect that will pull the rug out from over $500 trillion worth of derivatives that are creating the appearance the European banking system is solvent, MI5 and other sources say.

A Japanese fixer in charge of high level financial transactions and an MI5 source both said the BIS or central bank for central banks in Switzerland was broke and was jacking up stock prices in Europe, Japan and the US to try to camouflage this. The situation in the United States is also headed for more chaos and possibly even civil war. Japanese intelligence agency and pentagon sources both say some sort of final showdown is expected before the situation there finally calms down.
