Islamist militants in Iraq have seized two new towns, widening their control after threatening to move on Baghdad.

The Sunni-led Islamists advanced into Diyala province in the east - near Iran and close to the capital - having seized Mosul and Tikrit to the north.

The UN says hundreds have been killed - with militants carrying out summary executions of civilians in Mosul, including 17 civilians in one street.

The US says it is looking at "all options", including military action.

Led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the insurgents have threatened to push to the capital, Baghdad and regions further south dominated by Iraq's Shia Muslim majority, whom they regard as "infidels".

Ten dead in strike on Gaza school as Israel renews shelling
(Reuters) An Israeli air strike killed at least 10 people and wounded about 30 others on Sunday in a UN-run school in the southern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medics said, as dozens died in renewed Israeli shelling of the enclave. The Israeli military declined immediate comment on the attack, the second to hit a school in less than a week. A missile launched by an aircraft struck the entrance to the school in the town of Rafah, the witnesses and medics said.

Hundreds of Palestinians in the area, where the Israeli military has been battling militants, had been sheltering in the facility. Last Wednesday, at least 15 Palestinians who sought refuge in a UN-run school in Jabalya refugee camp were killed during fighting, and the UN said it appeared that Israeli artillery had hit the building.

The Israeli military said gunmen had fired mortar bombs from near the school and it shot back in response. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli shelling killed at least 30 people in Gaza, a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep up pressure on Hamas even after the army completes its core mission of destroying a tunnel network that extends into Israel.

Fatah leader and Rafah resident Ashraf Goma said Israeli forces were bombarding the town from air, ground and sea and locals were unable to deal with the wounded and the dead. "Bodies of the wounded are bleeding in the streets and other corpses are laid on the road with no one able to recover them. "I saw a man on a donkey cart bringing seven bodies into the hospital. Bodies are being kept in ice-cream refrigerators, in flower and vegetable coolers," Goma told Reuters. After accusing Hamas of breaching a US- and UN-brokered ceasefire on Friday, Israel said it would not send envoys as scheduled.

Truce efforts
In Cairo, efforts to find a new truce were due to resume on Sunday. A delegation from Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad arrived in the Egyptian capital, but a quick breakthrough seemed unlikely in the absence of Israeli representatives. After accusing Hamas of breaching a US- and UN-brokered ceasefire on Friday, Israel said it would not send envoys as scheduled.
In Gaza, Israel intensified attacks in the area of Rafah along the border with Egypt, where 23-year-old officer Hadar Goldin was feared captured there on Friday shortly after what was to have been a 72-hour truce began. The military later said Goldin, who was dragged by militants into a tunnel after two of his comrades were killed by a suicide bomber, had also died in action. "The findings on the ground, the items that we found led us to the conclusion that he was killed in the initial attack," said Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner, a military spokesman. Lerner said ground forces were being redeployed in the Gaza Strip, though he gave no details of their new positions, and added that residents from a number of evacuated Palestinian neighbourhoods had been told by the military they could return. More than 30 tunnels and dozens of access shafts have been unearthed and were being blown up. "We have proceeded with the mission in order to eliminate those (tunnels) that we have found and we expect to complete that within a short period of time, probably within the next 24 hours or so," he said.
Israel began its air and naval offensive against Gaza on July 8 following a surge of cross-border rocket salvoes by Hamas and other guerrillas, later escalating the operation into ground incursions. The fighting on Sunday pushed the Gaza death toll given by Palestinian officials to 1,726, most of them civilians. Israel has confirmed that 64 soldiers have died in combat, while Palestinian rockets have also killed three civilians in Israel. At least 30 Palestinians in Rafah were killed by Israeli fire on Sunday, including nine from the same family, hospital officials said. The talks in Cairo, without Israeli participation, were unlikely to produce any breakthrough, as Israel and Hamas' positions remain far apart. Israel says it wants Gaza demilitarised under any long-term arrangement. Hamas, sworn to Israel's destruction, demands Israel withdraw its troops and a lifting of Israeli and Egyptian blockades that have choked Gaza's economy.

In addition, as you will read about below, the federal government has the authority “to separate and restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill”. If you want to look at these laws in the broadest sense, they pretty much give the federal government the power to do almost anything that they want with us in the event of a major pandemic. Of course such a scenario probably would not be called “marital law”, but it would probably feel a lot like it.

World Health Organisation Warning : Ebola is out of Control

The World Health Organisation has warned that failing to stop West Africa's Ebola outbreak, which has killed more than 700 people since February, could have catastrophic consequences. We hear many accounts of what happened during the Holocaust. The atrocities committed; the times and places in which unspeakable acts against humankind occurred; the millions of lives stolen too soon.

But the story told above by Nazlie Alla, whose Albanian Muslim family sheltered Jews from Greece, Slovakia, and Germany, is less well known.

It's hard to imagine that in any European country there were more Jews at the end of World War II than before it began. But almost every single Jew in Albania, whether they were Albanians or refugees from other nations, survived during the German occupation.

And Albania was the only European country to have a Muslim majority.

Norman Gershman, a photographer and historian who traveled throughout Albania documenting the accounts of Muslim families who protected Jews, put out a book entitled Besa: Muslims who Saved Jews in World War II. He recalled that "What Besa says is that if some one knocks on your door you have an absolute obligation -- no matter who that person is -- to save their lives."

Albania at the time had around 800,000 citizens, only about 200 of whom were Jewish -- though over 2,000 refugee Jews from Greece, Austria and Italy were taken in to the homes of Albanians as well. And it wasn't just Muslims making sacrifices -- the entire population, approximately 70% Bektashi Muslim, 20% Orthodox Christians and 10% Catholic -- risked their lives to save Jewish strangers.

The stories of righteous Muslims in Gershman's book reveal that they understood Besa as an expression of the Qur'anic teachings of mercy, hospitality, and protecting the weak. Kujtim Civeja, a member of a traditional Muslim family of scholars, said "Our father wrote that when he had the opportunity and privilege to shelter so many Jewish families it gave him joy to put into practice his Islamic faith. To be generous is a virtue."

Hamdi Mece explained "We never took money from those we sheltered. We took them in under our Besa. We are true Muslims, and God granted us the privilege of saving Jews. All life is precious and given by God. To save a life is God's gift."

Each portrait of a righteous person in this book is moving. But one in particular -- Sadik Kalaja, who was twelve years old when his family sheltered a Yugoslav Jewish couple, allowing them to light Sabbath candles in their home -- struck me.

Looking beyond the rhetoric yields a complex series of possibilities for Bitcoin's future. Let's start with the most glaring observation, namely the e-currency's lofty valuation. At its current level, Bitcoin is unquestionably too pricey to be considered as a legitimate alternative to the dollar. The average American quite simply can't afford to own Bitcoins, and few are technologically savvy enough to "mine" them. This is one major obstacle standing in the way of Bitcoin's widespread acceptance.

Bitcoin's ride to stratospheric levels over the past year is reminiscent of the speculative bubble in the gold market -- a bubble which eventually imploded and scared away multitudes of investors. Runaway speculation caused its price to soar from $140 to $266 in only four days in April 2013, only to erase most of those gains a few days later. In October and November Bitcoin's value went parabolic, far exceeding the April run-up. This in turn was followed by a sharp decline in December, followed by another recovery rally (see chart below). Most recently one Bitcoin was quoted as being worth $842.

Doctors Without Borders says the Ebola epidemic in West Africa is unprecedented and out of control.

The charity’s director of operations, Bart Janssens, said there was no overarching vision as to how to tackle the outbreak in an interview with Belgium’s La Libre Belgique newspaper, calling it an “epidemic” that was “without precedent” and “absolutely out of control.”

The outbreak began in southeastern Guinea in March. Since then, the virus has spread to neighbouring Sierra Leone and Liberia, with 814 confirmed cases across the three countries, according to the World Health Organization.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf closed most of the country’s border crossings over the weekend in an effort to stop the virus from spreading further.

The Ebola virus is transmitted through bodily fluids via oral and nasal exposure and through the conjunctiva. The virus infects and replicates in immune cells, which further disseminate the virus through the circulation. It eventually dysregulates host immune response, causes coagulation abnormalities and impairs vascular system, which leads to shock and systemic organ failure.

In other words, the federal government already has the authority to round people up against their will, take them to detention facilities and hold them there for as long as they feel it is “reasonably necessary”. In addition, as you will read about below, the federal government has the authority “to separate and restrict the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill”. If you want to look at these laws in the broadest sense, they pretty much give the federal government the power to do almost anything that they want with us in the event of a major pandemic. Of course such a scenario probably would not be called “marital law”, but it would probably feel a lot like it.
