Rand Paul Tells Erin Burnett Democrat 'Intransigence' Keeping Government Shut Down

10/2/13 - Immediately following statements from party leaders in the House and Senate on their Wednesday evening meeting with President Obama, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) joined Erin Burnett on CNN to speak for Senate Republicans on the state of negotiations with Democrats and the president as day two of the government shutdown comes to a close.

Paul began by insisting the Republicans are trying to "compromise" with the president but are not getting anything in return. "We started out with a position that we don't want any Obamacare," he said. "The president wants all of it, 100%. I would think a compromise would be both sides come off of their positions some."

Burnett countered by reminding Paul that Democrats are offering a spending cap in order to come to a long-term agreement on the budget, asking, "Why isn't that enough? It does seem like Obamacare is a bit of an obsession."

Paul shot back that the Democrats are "defying what the normal history of compromise" has been in Washington. "Their intransigence really is keeping the government shut down." He added later, "When we have a divided government, it means we have to get together and negotiate. The fact that they won't negotiate I think really is untenable. I think they're going to eventually have to talk to us."

One aspect of this debate Paul refused to inject himself into was the growing divide between more moderate Republicans like Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and tea party conservatives like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over the tactics being used to demonstrate opposition to Obamacare. He instead chose to focus on the commonalities between all members of the GOP.

While he said "everybody" can admit that Republicans did not all agree on the "tactics," Paul stressed that "on Obamacare, we're absolutely united," saying "it's bad for America." Despite that certainty, he said Republicans are willing to compromise. "That's what the American people need to know," he said. "We've been giving and giving and giving. The president is saying 'My way or the highway' and I don't think that's what the American people want."

Finally, Paul insisted that when it comes to the debt ceiling, he's for "taking default completely off the table." He made a promise to the American people and Wall Street "that we will always pay the interest on the debt as a priority."

Obama Warns of Financial Tumult: Markets 'Should be Concerned'

10/2/13 - During an interview with CNBC, President Barack Obama told NBC News reporter John Harwood that financial markets "should be concerned." Asked about the apparent lack of concern over the government shutdown displayed in the stock market, Obama said that he spoke with individuals in the financial industry and warned them of the grave consequences of default if the debt ceiling is not raised.

"Wall Street's been pretty calm about this," Harwood said. "The reaction, I would say generally speaking, has been 'Washington fighting, Washington posturing, yadda, yadda, yadda.' Is that the right way to look at it?"

"No. This time's different," Obama replied. "I think they should be concerned."

Obama said that he discussed with some influential members of the financial industry just how dangerous the present standoff is and what could happen if it bleeds into the middle of the month when the government needs to raise the debt ceiling.

"One thing I often hear is, 'Well, Mr. President, even if they're being unreasonable, why can't you just go ahead and do something that makes them happy now?'" Obama continued.

"What I have to remind people is what we're debating right now is keeping the government open for two months," Obama continued. "We would then be going through this exact same thing in the middle of Christmas shopping season."

Obama said that he wants to help Congress "break" the "fever" of "governing from crisis to crisis."

The US Government shutting is a huge tragicomedy proving to everyone that this transient, lethal, financial tightrope that the global population is being forced to walk upon, and endure, is a complete disaster waiting to happen. It can be compared to humanity in a financial passenger jet without manual override, on automatic pilot only, with no safety net to avert a disaster when that financial system goes wrong, which it inevitably has, and will continue to do so, being based on a scaffolding of fear, short term gain and greed.

Any system based on short term greed and fear, which blinkers vision and wisdom for future consequences, is inevitably destined to collapse, and if populations are completely dependent on that system for basic survival, then that collapse will be devastating globally, as we will see. We are witnessing a financial trajectory of madness, designed and perpetuated by greedy madmen, grinding to a predictable halt, and as I predicted in my book The Emergency Transformation of Human Beings people will be forced to create another system, operating independently of government control, so that the current system doesn’t collapse on top of them, as it is now. We cannot continue as humanity relying on a system that  can destroy us at any moment.

People worldwide, have allowed themselves to be manipulated and maneuvered into a financial system that has created a virtual slavery which is  disastrous not only individually, but globally, making it very difficult to break free from it, once born into it. That reliance has become a self perpetuating heroin addiction for the human population from birth to death, and if that addiction is not broken, it is safe to say that it will create further mayhem and madness, and end in tragedy after tragedy, with much pain and struggle.

This economy is like a poison chalice which will be pressed to our own lips if it is not disposed of, and replaced, by another more benign, symbiotic system which is more harmonious for people, and designed for freedom instead of debt. When an economy is built without a vision based on strict ethics, morals and responsibility for the future of the planet and its people, it is very dangerous, particularly because once things have been set in motion, that trajectory can perpetuate itself, and become like an out of control monster, as in the old film Frankenstein’s Monster, where a power crazed, foolish, and unscrupulous scientist Dr Frankenstein, created a huge monster that went out of control. He ended up having to kill his rampaging creation in order to save the world from its destruction, which was difficult as he had made it so huge, and devoid of ethics and morals.

The power crazed people who are controlling our planet are now in a very similar situation. They have also created a huge Frankenstein’s monster which is destroying the world and its citizens. It is killing people physically, mentally, and spiritually, and perpetuating misery and struggle worldwide. This great, global monster of destruction is currently, and ironically, also destroying itself, and we must now act quickly to prevent it destroying everything else along with it, including us.

When we look at this destructive system, and think of somehow changing it, the task seems so huge because of its momentum, and anything we do seems like putting an umbrella up in a hurricane. The very fact that we cannot seem to envisage another system other than this one, tells us how indoctrinated and conditioned we have become, but as I said at the beginning of my book The Emergency Transformation of Human Beings it is the people who are the fuel that perpetuate this system, and once the people change, everything changes. The transformation of the people ultimately dictates the politics, the world, and the people’s future.

Shakespeare resonated with the Frankenstein’s monster analogy of our foolishly designed, dangerous financial system when he said:

Inspired by his interviews with inventor Ray Kurzweil, roboticist Rodney Brooks, and sci-fi legend Arthur C. Clarke, author James Barrat was impressed by their vision of intelligent machines. He talked about how corporations and government agencies are pouring billions into developing artificial intelligence (AI), and pondered whether we can coexist with computers whose intelligence dwarfs our own. What AI has done is to put human cognition type abilities into machines, and with processors increasing in speed every year, they are growing smarter. We'll reach a milestone in the 2020s when computers are both self-aware and self-improving, and it's uncertain how that will play out, he remarked.

As we head into an artificial intelligence explosion, when "learning machines...can write their own software, and improve their own software through experience," they will eventually surpass human intelligence, he said. "Something that is marginally smarter than the average human will quickly become much, much smarter than the average human, and there's no real ceiling on that" --they could become thousands or millions of times smarter than us, he continued. This is of particular concern because it is unknown how these brilliant machines will perceive humanity-- we have the example of how humans treat animals less smarter than ourselves. "They're in cages, or zoos, or in Sea World, or they're endangered. We don't hold them in high regard...Something thousand of times smarter than we are, may not perceive that we're worth the resources we consume," he pointed out.

Barrat noted that many companies are developing AI in secrecy, to protect commercial prospects, as well as military advancements. Yet, as AI reaches human level intelligence, it's important for developers to get together, as the technology will become increasingly volatile. To avert some of the more perilous outcomes of AI, we need more scrutiny and transparency in its development, he advised.

NSA Revelations

First hour guest, reporter David Seaman reacted to the latest revelations about the NSA, such as their covert $250-million-a-year program with tech companies to insert weaknesses into the security of their products, so they can more readily break encryption codes. It's pretty unbelievable that a tax payer funded agency is spending this kind of money to make products actually less safe for customers, he commented. Further, the NSA has been intrusively collecting large amounts of data on US citizens' social connections, who they are interacting with, both online and off, Seaman detailed. We're in a transitional time now, he noted, and a movement is gathering steam against what the NSA has been doing (a non-partisan rally Stop Watching Us is planned for October 26th in Washington DC).
