Fukushima TEPCO sets Decontamination Deadline, Sick Workers, Loose Bolts, Scrap 5&6 Update 9/20/13

TEPCO's water purification plan faces difficulties

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says it will purify all the radioactive water at the site by March 2015.
But observers say that won't be easy.
Tokyo Electric Power Company said Thursday there's a total of 440,000 tons of contaminated water in the basement of the turbine buildings and in storage tanks. The utility says there's another 15,000 tons in tunnels under the compound.
Containing the radioactive water was the main issue Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed with TEPCO on Thursday during his visit to the plant.
The utility plans to install 2 more water treatment devices in addition to one now in place. But its trial run is currently on hold because of damage caused by corrosion.
One of the two additional devices is a high performance model. TEPCO hopes the three devices will enable it to treat 1,500 tons of water a day. That's 3 times the present rate.
But the water-treatment devices cannot remove tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.
TEPCO also has a plan to release clean groundwater into the ocean before it is contaminated by the facilities area. It will do that by forming a bypass around the plant.
But there are growing fears that a leak of 300 tons of tainted water from a storage tank could be affecting the groundwater before it reaches the facility.
Local fishermen are worried this could further hurt Fukushima's image and delay the restart of the local fishery.
Observers say TEPCO needs to come up with a credible plan to deal with these problems.

New nuclear waste disposal plan presented to panel

Japan's Industry Ministry has proposed a new way of disposing of highly radioactive nuclear waste that can be retrieved, if needed, after it is buried underground.
Ministry officials made the new proposal to its panel of experts on Friday.
They explained radioactive waste might need to be recovered from an underground storage if something happens that requires a review of the method, or if new technology to lower its toxicity is developed.
The ministry plans to bury high-level radioactive waste more than 300 meters underground, where it would remain for tens of thousands of years.
The ministry has been considering storage sites for 13 years, but the process had been stymied by strong public concern.
The Science Council of Japan said last year that since Japan is prone to seismic and volcanic activity using current technology it is difficult to determine sites that will remain stable for tens of thousands of years.
The ministry began overhauling plans in May this year.
Ministry officials say a time limit cannot be placed on how long the new proposal will be discussed.

Inose: Tainted water not necessarily under control

Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose says that the problem of radioactive water leaking from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant isn't necessarily under control.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared at the general assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Buenos Aires that the situation at Fukushima is under control.
The IOC chose Tokyo as the host city for the 2020 summer Olympics and Paralympics.
At a news conference on Friday, Inose said the most important thing is that Abe expressed his determination to bring the situation under control.
The governor praised Abe for dispelling widely spread speculation and concern about the leakage problem.
Inose added that he expects the central government to do all it can to solve the problem.

Motegi: Scrapping 2 reactors helps

Japan's industry minister says decommissioning 2 undamaged reactors at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi plant would help accelerate scrapping of the facility's damaged reactors.
Toshimitsu Motegi was speaking on Friday a day after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asked the plant's operator to decommission the Number 5 and 6 reactors.
The 2 reactors, unlike the plant's other 4, remained intact after the 2011 massive quake and tsunami. But local municipalities have been demanding that Tokyo Electric Power Company scrap them.
Motegi said decommissioning the 2 would create space to build more tanks to store contaminated wastewater.
He added that during the scrapping process, the operator could use the 2 reactors' facilities to train its engineers. He said such training is impossible at the damaged No. 1 to 4 reactors due to high radiation.
Referring to a massive buildup of contaminated water at the plant, Motegi said the government will allocate state funds to install a high-performance water treatment device there.
He said the government and the company will do their best to complete work to purify the water by the end of March 2015, without sticking to a schedule.

A Financial Recovery Will Be A Suicide Not A Solution – By Jason Liosatos

The word recover means ‘to become healthy again, to regain a former condition’. The financial recovery that the government and people seem to be hoping for is the worse possible outcome for us, because the last thing we need is to ‘recover’ back to the same, or similar thing, or system that is destroying us. It would be like a dying heroin addict wanting to recover back to what was killing them, and got them into that state of health to begin with. The very notion of us wanting to return to what has been killing us is insanity, and the fact that we are so accepting of and indoctrinated by our money system is a great pointer to how far we have strayed from reality in our financial casino existence, and prison of debt globally.

Impossible and unrealistic though it may seem, we urgently require a completely different system which is not based upon short term greed, gain, and fear. Our current system though it may seem to work is actually destroying us and the planet we live on, and alarmist though that may seem, it is in fact true. We have actually become addicted and imprisoned by the money system, which traps us early in life and never releases us, and even after our death we are expected to pay for expensive funeral bills.

The heroin addiction analogy is a good one, money is very similar to heroin, because for most people even when they get money they only get a temporary ‘fix’ of relief, because like a heroin addict they know it is going to run out and they will soon need more to survive, so it is a continuous cycle of fear and relief. Unless a person is in the higher echelons of the money world, they are generally trapped in that continual cycle of fear and debt, mixed with partial relief after each fix or payment that allows them to ‘stay in the game’, and on the hamster wheel of existence.

It is an almost unbelievable fact that most people are swinging between a strange psychological pendulum of fear to freedom, and pleasure to pain almost continually, as they grapple with the mixed emotions of elation, relief and the temporary sense of being saved when they acquire money, which literally stops them from becoming homeless, hungry, cold and helpless, but at the same time they have the underlying thought that their struggle will not end with that payment, but it will just continue the cycle of them scrambling to get some more as soon as its gone.

We have become used to our prison of debt and fear, and we are so incredibly stuck in that fear that we can hardly imagine another system beyond it or better than it, hence our hope and desire that this same deleterious, damaging  money system recovers back to what it was, or worse still stays as it is. We are so deeply frightened and trapped that we dare not think that we could break free from this system of money, partially because people would rather barely survive and struggle, and work all the time and play it safe, than try to design another system that could set them free. The already damaged and frightened public are purposely kept trapped by the big money manipulators who control the Global Casino, which is purposely built and designed for debt not freedom. Our whole money system is designed to entrap and enslave the whole population of the planet, and it is killing that population both psychologically and physically.

Fortunately this system of fear and debt is inevitably, and predictably collapsing, because any system which is built and based on fear and short term greed is destined to fail, because it is a terrible, unsustainable and dangerous scaffolding to build any society on. So let us remind ourselves again that the last thing we need is a recovery to that which is destroying us, and if we do retain and return to it, it will inevitably kill us. An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has been recorded near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. There are no reports of damage to destroyed facilities and no spike in radiation levels in the area.
The earthquake took place at 17:25 GMT, according to United States Geological Service (USGS) which measured the quake at 5.3. The Japan Meteorological Agency, however,  put the quake at magnitude 5.8.

9/19/13 - As the major implementation date for the Affordable Care Act approaches, conservatives are doing everything they can to prevent the law from coming to fruition. Naturally, this includes Rush Limbaugh, who used a new tack to argue against Obamacare on his radio show Thursday, along the way comparing it to slavery. Limbaugh's argument hinged on a term that's popular with Democrats who want to see Obamacare become a reality: "It's the law of the land." The host wondered "what else at one time was the 'law of the land?': Slavery!"

"Slavery used to be the law of the land," Limbaugh informed his audience, noting that the Supreme Court even once upheld it. From there, he listed other things that used to be the "law of the land" but are not relics of the past:

"Defense of Marriage Act."
"The speed limit used to be 55, now it's 70."
"Immigration law."
"Guns, Second Amendment."
"Laws against marijuana."

(Reuters) - The "London Whale" trading scandal, once dismissed as a "tempest in a teapot" by JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon, is costing the largest U.S. bank $920 million in penalties and a rare public admission of wrongdoing.
Settlements with four U.S. and British regulators, made public on Thursday, resolve the biggest civil probes of the bank's $6.2 billion of Whale derivatives trading losses last year. Criminal investigations are still under way.

Fire And Explosions At Danlin Chemical Plant Near Thomas 09/19/2013

CUSTER COUNTY, Oklahoma -

People were forced to leave their homes late Wednesday night when a fire led to explosions at a plant in the town of Thomas in Custer County.

Someone called 911 just before midnight after hearing the blasts at the Danlin facility. The plant produces chemicals used in oilfield productions.

A News 9 photographer was on the scene quickly, and heard explosions and saw large flames and smoke shooting at least 100 feet into the air.

Multiple agencies in the area are assisting the Thomas Fire Department, but crews have decided to back off and let the fire burn itself out.

An employee for the Thomas Fire Department told News 9 that evacuations were ordered for the immediate area; about 10 families had to leave their homes.

There have been no reports of injuries. A representative for Danlin said the last employee left the plant between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., hours before the fire.

The fire appears to have destroyed the facility and at least a dozen vehicles at the plant. It's not known yet what caused the fire and explosions.

The Federal Reserve System (also known as the Federal Reserve, and informally as the Fed) has faced various criticisms since its inception. The system was established on December 23, 1913 as a third attempt at central banking in the United States. The Federal Reserve Act was considered to be the solution to the money trust even though elements of the system were conceived by Nelson Aldrich and banking executives.

Ryan Grim of the Huffington Post has argued that the Federal Reserve System "so thoroughly dominates the field of economics that real criticism of the central bank has become a career liability for members of the profession..." Grim quotes Wall Street analyst Joshua Rosner as saying: "The Fed has a lock on the economics world..... There is no room for other views, which I guess is why economists got it so wrong." Grim argues that the Federal Reserve System maintains some control over economists through such publications at the Journal of Monetary Economics where, he says, "more than half of the editorial board members are currently on the Fed payroll -- and the rest have been in the past."

Grim also writes that economist Milton Friedman had concerns "about the stifled nature of the debate" over economic policy. He wrote to a colleague that ".....having something like 500 economists is extremely unhealthy. As you say, it is not conducive to independent, objective research. You and I know there has been censorship of the material published. Equally important, the location of the economists in the Federal Reserve has had a significant influence on the kind of research they do, biasing that research toward noncontroversial technical papers on method as opposed to substantive papers on policy and results...."

Wall Street analyst Rosner wrote, according to Grim, "a strikingly prescient paper in 2001 arguing that relaxed lending standards and other factors would lead to a boom in housing prices over the next several years, but that the growth would be highly susceptible to an economic disruption because it was fundamentally unsound."

Economist Paul Krugman has been critical as well. In a 2007 interview with Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now!, in referring to Alan Greenspan, Krugman said: "I've been blackballed from the Fed summer conference at Jackson Hole, which I used to be a regular at, ever since I criticized him.... Nobody really wants to cross him." In 2007, Krugman also stated: "And two years ago, the conference was devoted to a field, new economic geography, that I invented, and I wasn't invited."[38]

According to a Bloomberg poll taken in 2010, Americans across the political spectrum say the Fed shouldn't retain its current structure of independence. When asked if the central bank should be more accountable to Congress, left independent or abolished entirely, 39 percent said it should be held more accountable, 37 percent favor the status quo, and 16 percent that it should be abolished.
