United States President Barack Obama and officials within the administration are beating the drums of war. How will this affect the markets, specifically commodities like gold and oil?
More than a decade after the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were launched -- not to mention the various strikes against Yemen, Pakistan and other countries initiated by President Barack Obama throughout his tenure as commander in chief -- the United States is drumming the beats of war again, this time in Syria.
After it was alleged that the Syrian government, led by President Bashar al-Assad, launched a chemical attack against its own people, even though there are some suggestions that it was performed by al-Qaeda, the Western world, particularly the U.S., has been urging for an attack against the country, a growing prospect as Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham are backing up the president.
This has led to millions of Syrians to either prepare for a potential war or to flee the country. In the U.S. and other developed countries, meanwhile, investors are becoming concerned about the stock market as oil, gold and other commodities are inching upwards over fears of a U.S.-led attack against Damascus.

If an attack occurs then expect commodities to rise, according to legendary investors Jim Rogers and Marc Faber. Rogers, speaking in an interview with Reuters, suggested that oil and gold could go "much, much higher" because the U.S. is "desperate to have a war."
"I own oil, I own gold, I own things like that and if there is going to be a war...they're gonna go much, much higher," said Rogers in the interview. "Stocks are gonna go down, some of the markets that I'm sure are already going down, commodities are gonna go up. I mean, yeah, some of the things I own all make a lot of money. It's, I'm not particularly keen on war, I assure you, but it sounds like they want it."
He went on to note that strange elements transpire in war and that there could be an array of unintended consequences that could hurt all involved parties. "But I do know that throughout history whenever you had war, things like food prices have gone up a lot, energy prices have gone up a lot, copper price, lead prices: you know, all of these things go up a lot whenever there's been a war in the past."

The latest economic news disappointed economists and suggests that the markets are unsure about the central bank's bond-buying program. Akin to what David Stockman, former budget director under President Ronald Reagan, explained earlier this year, the stock market depends very much on the Fed's stimulus efforts.
Speaking with Hard Assets Investor last week, Marc Faber, the editor and publisher of the Gloom Boom & Doom Report, projected the rising price of gold due to not just a potential war with Syria but also the rising debt levels and monetization policies performed by central banks worldwide.
"Looking at the fundamentals, looking at how debt will continue to increase and how central banks will continue their monetization not only in the U.S. but on a worldwide scale, I assume the price of gold will trend higher," said Faber. "Most likely we've seen the lows below $1,200."
Much like other gold bugs and some financial experts, Faber correction. But in longer-term bull markets, these kinds of corrections do occur. We had a 40-50 percent correction in 1987 in equity markets. But the bull market lasted until the year 2000."

On top of the issue with Syria, Washington will soon deal with another debt ceiling crisis next month. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew noted late last month that the U.S. federal government will be hitting the debt limit in mid-October.

9/7/13 - Secretary of State John Kerry held a joint press conference in Paris on Saturday with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius following a meeting with European Union members. Kerry continued to make the case for military intervention in Syria, and continued emphasizing in his opening remarks that "we are not talking about going to war." He said the United States cannot be "silent spectators to slaughter" and argued that doing nothing is "far more risky than responding."

During the press conference, NBC's Andrea Mitchell asked Kerry about the strong opposition the Obama administration faces at home, pointing to the strong public and Congressional stance against Syrian intervention. She asked Kerry, "How can the administration take action in the face of that?"

Kerry maintained that what happened in Syria isn't just contained to Syria, "this concerns every American's security." He noted that the only two other men to use chemical weapons in such a manner before Assad were Adolf Hitler and Sadaam Hussein. Kerry referred to Russia's standing on the U.N. Security Council, arguing that the U.S. can't just turn its back because the international body has become a "tool of ideology."

He argued on his radio show Friday that thanks to the way the president has mishandled the situation completely, Americans are now finally "coming to grips with Obama's incompetence on things," catching up with the rest of the world for the first time.

Limbaugh found it beyond absurd how the "Obama regime people are vetting the moderate rebels," declaring that "there are no moderators in the Middle East," certainly in the rebel groups. Rep. Alan Grayson Cackles That Syrian Atrocities 'Simply Not Our Problem'

9/5/13 - The debate over military action in Syria has produced a landfill's worth of stupidity, from every side of the debate, and every corner of the political media. This is somewhat predictable, as we all know what opinions are like, but on Thursday night's All In with Chris Hayes, "Congressman with Guts™" Alan Grayson (D-FL) made a bold incursion, from stupid into contemptible.

Following his excellent interview with Secretary of State John Kerry, host Chris Hayes continued the media's current pastime of coaxing valueless opinions out of unqualified guests by interviewing Rep. Alan Grayson, who opposes the proposed military intervention in Syria. There are legitimate reasons to oppose the strike, as well as to support it, but Grayson's performance here was a very extreme example of what has been so wrong with much of the media's treatment of the Syria debate: a complete lack of seriousness or humility. If you'd like to see an example of seriousness and humility, check out the first half of this Chris Hayes commentary from Wednesday night, then slam your head on your desk.

You can watch the full Grayson segment here, but I don't have the time or the inclination to pick it all apart. It's chock full of genius. I just want you to watch what has to be the most ridiculous displays of callous arrogance in the history of cable news. Chris Hayes asked Grayson if there was anything in the interview with Secretary Kerry "that you find compelling or convincing?"

"Not at all," Grayson replied, with a thin smirk. "Listen, most people understand this is simply not our problem. This is not our problem to solve."

Hayes, to his credit, pushed back, although with characteristic understatement. "I have to say, that sounds morally obtuse to me."

"Sorry," Grayson replied, and with a cackle, added "I'm being totally honest."

He then went on to argue that the calls he's getting from constituents are running "100 to 1″ against the intervention. Whatever you think about Grayson's logic, which I will get to in a second, what the frack is he laughing about? What, exactly, is so funny about this? There doesn't seem to be much that people agree about with regard to Syria, but can't we at least find common ground in the notion that this is not a laughing matter?

As for Grayson's reading of the American public, he seems to be forgetting that the American people overwhelmingly supported military action in Iraq. Now, Grayson might point out that this was a result of misleading information, and he'd be right. However, aside from the fact that a significant chunk of the American public probably thinks Damascus is some kind of Halloween super-store, a certain amount of the erosion of public support for airstrikes could have something to do with people in the media telling them that this is just like Iraq.
