Fukushima Disaster ~ Watchdog Issues Fresh Radioactivity Alert

Radioactive contaminated groundwater from the Fukushima plant has likely breached an underground barrier and could rise to the surface, Japan's nuclear watchdog says.

The troubled Fukushima nuclear plant's operators are facing yet more criticism.

On Friday the Tokyo Electric Power Co. released this footage of a probe from one of the reactors.

But Japan's nuclear watchdog said on Monday that radioactive water is seeping into the ocean creating an "emergency" Tepco is struggling to contain.

The contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier and is rising towards the surface, says the nuclear regulator.

Tepco has been buffeted by criticised since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that wrecked the Fukushima plant.

Masashi Goto, a retired nuclear engineer who worked on several Tepco plants, says the company has not been proactive in resolving the contamination crisis.

He says the current situation is more than Tepco can handle.

The regulatory task force overseeing Fukushima said "new measures are needed to stop the water from flowing into the sea''.

Each day Tepco pumps out 400 tons of groundwater that flows in from surrounding hills to try to stop it mixing with the highly irradiated water used to cool the reactors.

Tepco now admits that tainted water is reaching the sea, saying on Friday the radioactive discharge is out of control.

National Security Agency Director Keith Alexander was jeered as he pleaded with professional hackers and cyber-security experts to reconsider the indiscriminate NSA surveillance during a speech at the annual Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alexander claimed that the surveillance methods, disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, have been mischaracterized by the media and are subject to rigorous government oversight. Dr. Michael Shermer is the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, the Director of the Skeptics Society, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, the host of the Skeptics Distinguished Science Lecture Series at the California Institute of Technology, and the co-host and producer of a Fox Family television series called, Exploring the Unknown.

Dr. Shermer received his B.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University, his M.A. in experimental psychology from California State University, Fullerton, and his Ph.D. in the history of science from Claremont Graduate University. He is the author of several books including, The Science of Good and Evil: Why People Cheat, Gossip, Share Care, and Follow the Golden Rule, on the evolutionary origins of morality and how to be good without God. Dr. Ken Hanson is a dynamic author, lecturer, and founder of "Treasures in Time," an organization devoted to disseminating knowledge of the Biblical and classical world. Collapse, directed by Chris Smith, is an American documentary film exploring the theories, writings and life story of controversial author Michael Ruppert. Collapse premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2009 to positive reviews.

Ruppert, a former Los Angeles police officer who describes himself as an investigative reporter and radical thinker, has authored books on the events of the September 11 attacks and of energy issues. Critics[who?] call him a conspiracy theorist and an alarmist.
Director Smith interviewed Ruppert over the course of fourteen hours in an interrogation-like setting in an abandoned warehouse basement meat locker near downtown Los Angeles. Ruppert's interview was shot over five days throughout March and April 2009. The filmmakers distilled these interviews down to this 82 minute monologue with archival footage interspersed as illustration.
The title refers to Ruppert's belief that unsustainable energy and financial policies have led to an ongoing collapse of modern industrial civilization.
The film does not overtly take a perspective on the validity of Ruppert's positions[citation needed] and critics have alternatingly described the film as supportive and as critical of Ruppert's views. Smith himself, speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere, said that "What I hoped to reveal was ... that his obsession with the collapse of industrial civilization has led to the collapse of his life. In the end, it is a character study about his obsession."[1]

The Obama administration has announced it will keep 19 diplomatic posts in North Africa and the Middle East closed for up to a week, due to fears of a possible militant threat. On Sunday, Senator Saxby Chambliss, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the decision to close the embassies was based on information collected by the National Security Agency. "If we did not have these programs, we simply would not be able to listen in on the bad guys," Chambliss said, in a direct reference to increasing debate over widespread spying of all Americans revealed by Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian. "Nobody has ever questioned or disputed that the U.S. government, like all governments around the world, ought to be eavesdropping and monitoring the conversations of people who pose an actual threat to the United States in terms of plotting terrorist attacks," Greenwald says.

Pointing to the recent revelations by leaker Edward Snowden that he has reported on, Greenwald explains, "Here we are in the midst of one of the most intense debates and sustained debates that we've had in a very long time in this country over the dangers of excess surveillance, and suddenly, an administration that has spent two years claiming that it has decimated al-Qaeda decides that there is this massive threat that involves the closing of embassies and consulates around the world. ... The controversy is over the fact that they are sweeping up billions and billions of emails and telephone calls every single day from people around the world and in the United States who have absolutely nothing to do with terrorism." Greenwald also discusses the NSA's XKeyscore internet tracking program, Reuter's report on the Drug Enforcement Agency spying on Americans, and the conviction of Army whistleblower Bradley Manning.

That's as some Republican senators called for a major rethink of relations between the two countries. The White House is re-evaluating whether US President Barack Obama needs to participate in a summit this autumn with Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, after Moscow granted asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden. "We are evaluating the utility of the summit in light of this," White House spokesperson, Jay Carney, said. The US is "extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step" despite Washington's official and private requests to expel him, he added. Carney stressed that Snowden's asylum is an "unfortunate development" in US-Russia relations, undermining the record of law enforcement cooperation between the two states, which was on an upswing since the Boston bombings. The White House spokesman stated that Washington would soon contact Russian authorities on the issue. At the same time, Carney said that the US doesn't want "Mr Snowden to become a problem" in US relations with Russia, which cover "important and broad" issues. The spokesman stressed the US doesn't view Edward Snowden as a whistleblower or dissident, reminding that the NSA former contractor is accused of leaking classified information in his home country. Next week's talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, were also "up in the air," a US official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. Earlier, US Senator John McCain expressed his outrage with Snowden's Russian asylum and demanded Washington re-examine its relations with Moscow and "strip away the illusions that many Americans have had about Russia." On Thursday, Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia and was allowed to enter the country's territory. According to the issued documents, the former CIA employee who broke PRISM spying scandal to the world is free to stay in Russia until at least July 31, 2014. Then the asylum status may be extended. With that in hand, Snowden cannot be handed over to the US authorities, even if Washington files an official request. He can now be transported to the United States only if he agrees to go voluntarily.
