Portions of an airport in Miami, Florida have been evacuated after depleted uranium was discovered early Thursday.
Firefighters
have cleared a 150-foot area of the Opa-locka Executive Airport in
south Florida after a 55 gallon drum located either on or near part of a
dismantled aircraft was discovered to be containing exposed, depleted
uranium, NBC 6 South Florida reported.
Opa-locka is a reliever
airport which serves as a secondary landing field for aircraft normally
going in and out of the larger Miami International Airport. It also is a
hub used by the United States Coast Guard for air and sea rescue
stations.
According to a local NBC affiliate, officials at Opa-locka say there are no reported injuries.

The Russian newspaper Kommersant quoted a
source close to the Iranian Foreign Ministry as saying President Putin
would visit on August 12, days after Hassan Rouhani is inaugurated.
Iran's Mehr news agency said Putin would travel to Iran on August 16, without citing a source.
Kremlin
spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined comment on the reports. Putin last
visited Iran in 2007 to attend a summit of states bordering the Caspian
Sea.
World powers hope Iran's relatively moderate new leader will
comply with demands for Tehran to scale back nuclear work which they
suspect is aimed at enabling it to make bombs.
Iran says it is
enriching uranium, the fissile material for atomic bombs, only to fuel

And there was a natural gas explosion on an unmanned
rig off the coast of Louisiana on Tuesday. The blaze has been described
as "out of control." No injuries were reported on the nearby jackup
rig, but a natural gas cloud and a very large light sheen was reported.
The operator of the well stated no "oil" was spilled, but again it's a
natural gas rig. Curiously the well that exploded was a sidetrack well,
which is usually used to overcome an engineering problem with the
original well. We'll stay on top of this story as it develops.

we have a Bloomberg-gate update. That would be the scandal where
Bloomberg reporters were allegedly spying on Bloomberg terminal users,
including such power users as Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner. Well, the
current attorney general of New York, Eric Schneiderman, who was funded

AG position is one that Eliot Spitzer held before becoming governor.

There are up to 5.9 million CCTV cameras in Britain, according to a report by The British Security Industry Association.
It's thought Britain could have more CCTV cameras than any other country in the world.
Evidence
Footage from CCTV cameras is often used by police as evidence to convict criminals, and some people believe this helps prevent crime.
Much of Britain has been fixated on this number ever since (a figure derived by counting those cameras present on Putney High Street in London and extrapolating upwards for a 'guesstimate'). We've been consistently bombarded with hypotheses on the supposed rise of the "Surveillance State" and George Orwell's Big Brother coming to life ever since.
The BSIA's 51-page document focuses on the number of properties in the UK, floor area, and "alternative appropriate estimates". It accounts for the number of CCTV cameras located in (for example) offices, factories, warehouses, schools, department stores, car parks, and railway stations, and those deployed for "security surveillance, related monitoring and safety aspects". Low-, medium-, and upper-level camera figures for the UK are tabulated.
According to the BSIA, camera numbers in the private sector could be outweighing those operated by the police and local authorities by a factor of somewhere around 70:1.
So the vast majority of cameras are privately owned and operated -- very much contrary to popular opinion that we're all living in a "Surveillance State".
Parliament has made a pleasing start to regulating CCTV and its operation, not least through the auspices of the Security Industry Authority and its own Public Space Surveillance licensing regime.
Is it, though, addressing what many commentators believe to be the central challenge -- the extent of camera proliferation in the private sector and the need for it to be closely monitored?
As stated, evidence to help solve cases of criminality unearthed by the police service often comes from cameras stationed in the private sector, but how many times have we heard about "less than perfect" installations or accusations of generally poor CCTV management? Are CCTV systems genuinely "fit for purpose" (i.e. are they fully operational and recording properly)? Do surveillance solutions meet the needs of their end-users (around image quality, for example)?
Increasingly, more companies wish their premises to be protected by CCTV, but, at the very same time, more non-specialist installers are entering the fray and itching to grab a slice of the commercial action.
Such regulation will ensure the private sector provides the highest-quality video evidence possible for use by the police and the courts. A situation that's very much for the public good.

Contaminated water may have leaked in ocean
The operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant acknowledged for the first time that highly-tainted underground water is seeping into the ocean.
Tokyo Electric Power Company has been studying highly radioactive underground water found in monitoring wells facing the Pacific Ocean since May.
TEPCO analyzed water levels inside the wells between January and July. They said a drop in the level suggests the tainted water has likely leaked into the ocean.
Earlier this month, Japan's nuclear regulatory body said it was very likely that contaminated water is leaking into the sea.
TEPCO shows media work to harden soil, halt leak
17 reporters and cameramen were guided to the site on Monday evening. Workers, who must wear protective suits and masks, are doing most of the work after sunset to avoid heatstroke.
Tokyo Electric Power Company has been injecting chemicals into soil along the embankment separating the plant site from the ocean to solidify it and prevent further radioactive groundwater from seeping through.

A senior Japanese government official has criticized the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for failing to stop radioactive water leaking into the ocean.
Tokyo Electric Power Company officials announced on Monday that new findings suggest tainted water has been leaking into the ocean since April.

Fishermen in Fukushima have expressed anger at Tokyo Electric Power Company's acknowledgement on Monday that contaminated underground water is seeping into the ocean.

Jim Rogers ~ PREPARE FOR FINANCIAL COLLAPSE NOW: When Feds stop printing FIAT currency
From Wall Street, gold price and US finance to conspiracies, latest global news, Gold prices have been tumbling.
But the ardent gold bulls have been hanging on.
The most popular argument that these gold bulls have clung to has been that mining costs will create a floor for gold prices.
The idea is that if gold continues to be below the cost of mining, then miners will stop mining and supply will disappear forcing gold prices up.
Peter Schiff made this argument late last month. And so did Art Cashin.
However, it's not completely obvious that a mine would shut down just because the market price falls below cost.
Jim Rogers, Chairman of Rogers Holdings told Business Insider that the closing of gold mines is a way off:
"I've been in the investment world a long time and I know that things can stay below the cost of production for years. It takes a long time for people to believe they have to close their mines. It costs money to close a mine, it costs money to re-open a mine, so people are reluctant to close mines. So you can see any commodity staying below the cost of production for a while, especially if it's something like a mine which is expensive to close, and expensive to open."
Rogers is a long-term bull on gold but and doesn't think the sell-off is over. He thinks gold prices have further to fall, and that gold is in the process of making a "complicated bottom."
