Solar radiation storm knocks out main US weather satelitte
(USA Today) -- One of the primary weather satellites meteorologists use to forecast weather over the eastern USA and the tropical Atlantic Ocean failed late Tuesday, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) geostationary satellite, known as "GOES-13," experienced trouble with its imaging equipment, he reports. "GOES" stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.
This is "not good on the verge of hurricane season," says J. Marshall Shepherd, a research meteorologist at the University of Georgia. Hurricane season starts on June 1.
NOAA is reactivating another satellite, GOES-14, just as the agency did last year when GOES-13 experienced a problem, Sosnowski says. Officials expect the new satellite to be ready early Thursday. If the backup fails, however, options are greatly reduced.
Geostationary satellites are in orbit 22,238 miles above the equator, which means they orbit at the same speed as the Earth's rotation, keeping them above the same spot on Earth.
NOAA reports that GOES satellites constantly monitor severe thunderstorms, flooding rainfall and hurricanes. They "are key instruments for meteorologists to provide watches and warnings for these dangerous weather phenomena," Sosnowski notes.
The "geostationary" satellites are different from the "polar-orbiting" satellites that provide much of the data for the computer models forecasters use to predict weather. Some of the polar-orbiting satellites could deteriorate or fail in the coming years, before new ones are able to be launched. This could leave a gap in the weather data that forecasters use.

Woolwich Suspects 'Known To Security Services'
Police search houses in Greenwich and Lincolnshire as it emerges the two suspects were not considered an immediate threat by MI5.
The two terror suspects being held under armed guard at hospitals in London were both known to security services, Government sources say.
The men - who were apparently assessed by MI5 as not posing a threat requiring "immediate intervention" - were arrested following the hacking to death of a serving soldier in the street in Woolwich, southeast London.
Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said one suspect had been identified as Michael Adeboloja, a 28-year-old Londoner of Nigerian descent.
Police investigating the attack have been searching an address in Greenwich and another in Lincolnshire, believed to be connected to Adeboloja.
Brunt added: "We believe it is his father's house that is being searched by Lincolnshire Police on behalf of counter-terrorism command at Scotland Yard."
Relatives of the dead soldier are believed to have been informed and his identity is expected to be released later today. A post mortem is being carried out on the body.
A Facebook page in honour of the Woolwich victim has received around one million 'likes'.
Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation into the "shocking and horrific" murder and the Prime Minister has held talks with his top advisers to address potential security implications.
Two suspected Muslim fanatics attacked the man in the street a short distance from the Royal Artillery Barracks after apparently knocking him down with their car.
Witnesses said they set about the soldier with a number of weapons, which appeared to include knives and a meat cleaver, while shouting the name of "Allah".

Michelle Malkin VS Leslie Marshall Heated Debate on London Terror - Hannity - 5/22/13
5/22/13 - Sean Hannity tonight led a heated panel discussion on the
horrifying terrorist attack in London today. He and Michelle Malkin
credited Prime Minister David Cameron with immediately labeling it a
terrorist act, saying that liberal political correctness would have
prevented that if such an attack occurred in the United States. Malkin
got into a shouting match with fellow panelist Leslie Marshall over how
the U.S. has responded to acts of Islamic violence, going so far as to
say political correctness on Islam leads to dead bodies.
Hannity doubted that had this attack occurred in the United States, the government would not have quickly labeled it a terrorist attack as it was in England. Malkin agreed, blaming political correctness in the United States. She mockingly asked, "What do you need to have? Neon lights that say 'Islamic jihad!" Malkin said that British progressives "brought it on themselves" due to "lax deportation policies" and an "unwillingness to screen out and profile Islamic militants." Hannity noted that England has strict gun laws, and wondered if the victim would have been able to defend himself if he had one.
Hannity brought up how the government's reaction to the Fort Hood shooting cited "workplace violence," and asked if they need to start "calling things what they are." Marshall dismissed the semantic argument and scolded Malkin for suggesting that progressives in England basically brought this upon them. She asked, "Does it matter that they're terrorists?" Hannity and Malkin both answered affirmatively, with the latter firing back that "it is not word games to call things what they are."
Malkin railed against liberals and the Obama administration for not being honest about acts of Islamic violence, and got in a brief shouting match with Marshall when Marshall insisted she always believed Fort Hood was a terrorist attack. Malkin argued that political correctness over labeling terrorist acts has very damning consequences.
"Those kinds of PC policies, lax immigration policies, refusal to do Islamic militant profiling has, yes, led to dead bodies in America and around the world. The sooner we reckon with it, the safer we'll be."

North Korea Fires 3 Missiles into Sea of Japan
North Korea on Saturday launched three short-range missiles into the Sea
of Japan, apparently as part of a military drill, South Korea's defence
ministry said.
US and South Korean forces had been on heightened alert for a medium-range ballistic missile test in recent weeks amid
tensions triggered by North Korea's nuclear test in February.
"North Korea launched two guided missiles in the morning and another one in the afternoon," a defence ministry spokesman said.
"The missiles landed in the East Sea (Sea of Japan)," he said.
South
Korea was maintaining intense surveillance of the North and keeping a
high-level of readiness to deal with any risky developments, he added.
North Korea sometimes launches short-range missiles for tests or as part of military drills.
"A
more detailed analysis will be needed but the missiles launched may be a
modified anti-ship missile or the KN-02 surface-to-surface missile
derived from the Soviet era SS-21 that has a range of about 120
kilometres," a Seoul official told Yonhap news agency.
Following the move, the United States urged the North to exercise restraint, without specifically commenting on the launches.
"We
are closely monitoring the situation on the Korean Peninsula. As is
standard practice, we do not comment on intelligence matters," Darby
Holladay, a state department spokesman said.
"We continue to urge North Korea to exercise restraint and take steps to improve its relations with its neighbours."
Seoul meanwhile branded the tests "serious" provocations.
"The
international community will levy much tougher sanctions against North
Korea for its continued absurd provocation," Min Hyun-Joo, spokeswoman
of the ruling Saenuri Party, was quoted as saying by Yonhap.
"No
compensations or benefits will be allowed if North Korea fails to show
changes in its policy toward the right direction," she added.
The
launches followed a joint South Korea-US naval exercise this week,
slammed by North Korea as a "wanton" provocation and rehearsal for war.
A
US defence official said last week that two North Korean Musudan
medium-range missiles that had been primed for firing as tensions flared
in the run-up to the North's national celebrations on April 15 had been
moved from their launch site.
Musudan missiles have an estimated
range of 2,500 to 4,000 kilometres (1,500 to 2,500 miles), enough to
reach South Korea and Japan and potentially US military bases on the
Pacific island of Guam.
US and South Korean officials had been

"Thank you. Well there is a great degree of unity here this morning, with a common enemy - rich people, successful companies evading tax, which of course is a problem.
Avoiding tax, which is not illegal, but it gives this whole chamber this morning a high moral tone.
And as Mr Barroso says it is all about the perception of fairness. Because there is the added bonus of course that it drives a wedge between the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the Caymans.
But before we declare our virtues, perhaps we ought to look just a little bit closer to home.
And I hope that the taxpayers all over Europe listen to this. If we look at the EU officials who work for the European Commission and the European Parliament, the highest category [the most common grade is AD12] are people that earn a net take home pay of just over 100 thousand pounds a year. And yet under EU rules they pay tax of 12 per cent. It is tax fraud on an absolutely massive scale.
And Mr Barroso I would say to you, how can that be deemed to be fair? How can people out there struggling - the 16 million people unemployed in the eurozone - how can they look at these institutions, not only paying people vast sums of money but allowing them tax and pension benefits on a scale not seen anywhere else in the world? So I suggest we have a bit less of this high moral tone.
And what have these officials given us? Well, they were the architects of the euro, which is a complete disaster. Their obsession with global warming which chimes very strongly here means we are despoiling our landscapes and seascapes with these disgusting wind turbines and driving up energy prices.
But never let it be said that I cannot acknowledge success when I see it. And I am sure the citizens of Europe will all clap and cheer loudly that the grave, mortal danger of olive oil in dipping bowls has been removed by the officials. Well done everybody."

WASHINGTON — If an extreme solar storm aimed at the Earth hits in just the right way, it could put interconnected electrical grids around the world at serious risk, experts say.
In addition to creating beautiful auroras, extreme solar storms could knock out a wide range of electric utilities needed to keep life in the United States and around the world functioning normally, according to presenters here at the fourth annual Electrical Infrastructure Security Summit.
"What [a solar storm] can do — even if it isn't causing a continental-scale outage — it can really cause a regional blackout," said Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado. "Imagine something like, for example, Superstorm Sandy. Imagine that kind of severe storm — but causing regional outages for weeks. As the sun reaches the peak in its 11-year cycle this year, scientists expect that active regions of the star — known as sunspots — will erupt, flinging streams of charged particles out into the solar system. Relatively minor storms can also create temporary radio blackouts and disrupt GPS navigation.
However, this doesn't necessarily mean that all solar eruptions will impact the Earth. Most coronal mass ejections are not aimed toward the planet, and instead shoot out harmlessly into other parts of the solar system. But once every century or so, an extreme solar storm is expected to impact the Earth, Baker told SPACE.com.
The last documented solar storm in this category is known as the Carrington event. Particles from a powerful coronal mass ejection overloaded telegraph wires, setting paper messages on fire in 1859.

The incident was only resolved after the cop tried to bribe and threaten the men to ERASE this footage or go to JAIL.... (This is a REAL police officer of the Houston TX Police Department. Apparently he works part-time as a guard for Wal Mart after his shift. This information was CONFIRMED by the other police officer who came to our rescue on the scene and who's information will remain anonymous for being a better person although they also took the bad cops side when it came to erasing the footage before our release. We made them think we erased it so YOU could see this for yourself. Also what you see in this video is the FIRST contact made with the police officer which was initiated by HIM. Had he ordered we stop video taping Wal Mart or just to plain STOP video taping we would have been happy to comply, but his issue was "Don't record ME!!" when my friend asked "What? Stop Recording?" the officer replied only with "NOT ME" and both of us confirmed he was not being recorded on purpose and continued with our harmless film which would probably have NEVER even surfaced had he not done what you see here) The police department also denies this as one of their own even while his information is public knowledge. Government Controlling People with Force and Fear is Almost Over
There is the ultimate world war taking place between those who are manipulated and those who are manipulating.
This war has gone on for thousands of years. People being controlled by fear by a few people at the top, who are controlling the police and military with fear, to do their dirty work to control the population of the world with fear. The people giving the orders are really cowards themselves. Kids in school used to do this. They would buy the toughest guy sweets and cakes, and give him money for protection, it’s very similar. They are buying the might of the military they created to protect themselves and steal and kill for them, to amass great fortunes and power.
The military are a bit like hunting dogs who are told ‘fetch’ with one point of a finger in the direction of Iraq, Libya, Syria or anywhere, and off they go without questioning their masters, until the masters say stop, and call them back with the catch or kill. Often splendid treasures are returned of oil, gold, minerals, money, swathes of land, and millions of ‘orphans’ for the unscrupulous IMF to adopt and manipulate with false love and bank loans, imprisoning them for generations to come.
The Government oligarchs have in essence bred a huge pack of dogs for protection as a mighty force around them. They teach them to fight and kill, and most importantly to take orders. It is quite simple, and works really well, imposing the ultimate threat of violence or death for the population if they dare to resist. The military enforcing the threats to the people are ironically also controlled by fear of Court Martial, imprisonment or death themselves if they dare to try to escape the hands of those that control and feed them, and their families wellbeing is also at stake.
Any megalomaniac can control people by fear and force, history is full of them. It is a sickness that the people of the world have been subjected to for thousands of years, over and over again. It is so instilled and accepted now as the normal thing, that up till now it has carried on, with the people believing that the police and military are protecting them. The shocking realisation now is that the military are the governments protection for themselves against anyone that threatens them, including its own population who they know would turn on them in a moment if they weren’t frightened of the police and military.
This is a pretty interesting truth to ponder over. What kind of system is this? Is it not a virtual concentration camp without walls? That answer is obvious. Anyone who doubted this is now seeing the proof of it playing out across the world, with people so crushed that the innate fear is dissipating and the stage is being set. I am convinced that the military and the CIA covert operatives are about to completely disarm the Governments once they feel they cannot live with the knowledge that they are working for evil instead of good, and there is no doubt now that they are on the wrong side, and for most people that’s too big a burden to carry through your life.
What is playing out at the moment in the Middle East is that the manipulators are using the already manipulated people’s despair to win them over, and tyrants are replacing tyrants with new lies and deceit, but the people are not so stupid any more, and will soon realize this.
Nobody would be resisting, demonstrating, and fighting against suppression if there wasn’t any, nobody is imagining being a suppressed slave for life. This truth is a good indicator as to how well a system is. If people are in harmony and feel in peace and at one with a system that is making them whole and fulfilled then there would be peace and harmony throughout, with no need for uprisings or unrest. The uprising is a natural effect ‘springing’ from a suppression. The only reason it doesn’t happen every day is because of brainwashing and fear, a powerful combination.
But holding people down can only last so long. It is very similar to trying to stop the rising of a fountain with its beautiful force and energy pushing out of the ground upward, in the most natural way. If you were to try to smother that fountain of that life loving, living force, it would burst out somewhere else nearby, and you could try all you liked, but that fountain would keep reaching for freedom the more you supressed it. People are that fountain, their spirits however tired want the freedom to reach skywards, and burst forth and flourish, and be all they can be, not just slaves living hand to mouth. This is what is taking place on this planet, people want to be free and gush forth as the beautiful living fountains that they are.
If we cannot rise in one place then we must rise in another, by bringing forth our fountains of energy together as a mighty force where we cannot be controlled. Which means creating our own systems independent of destructive leaders.
Interestingly the fountain analogy is a good one, and more of a reality than an analogy because the truth is that humans are actually not solid, but literally fountains of energy that are renewing themselves continually, that is a fact on a very real level of science and can be proved. All matter and energy occur in waves, and we are no exception, so we are standing waves of energy like fountains.
It is worth quoting again some words by a great teacher of mine that sounds timely in our current planetary emergency:
‘The people of the ‘democracies’ are living under oppression, with continuance built into the laws enacted by the party clique in control, which even the elections or the revolutions change only in name, not in psychological type or character.

He mused, "I don't want to be a psychiatrist here, but when you're a kid raised in a real turbulent situation... no authoratative figure, no father, all of that, when you get to be an adult, the chances are you're going to want to control your environment." The Fox host conceded that "every president" wants "control" and "loyalty" to some degree, but with Obama is goes a step further, saying it rises to the level of "absolute power." And "most of his acolytes give him that," O'Reilly said, "they just bow down to Barack Obama." He suggested that the only people capable of telling the president he's "wrong" are First Lady Michelle Obama and adviser Valerie Jarrett. O'Reilly suggested that all of this explains why the administration goes after leaks so aggressively.
