Sustainable and Frugal Living The Heart of Los Angeles
Erik Knutzen and Kelly Coyne have been farming their yard in Los Angeles for over a decade. In addition to a mini orchard and extensive veggie garden, they have all the instruments of an urban homestead: chickens, bees, rainwater capture, DIY greywater, solar fruit preserver, humanure toilet, rocket stove, adobe oven. But they don't like to talk about sustainability of self-sufficiency, instead they prefer the term self-reliance.
"I don't like the goal of self-sufficiency, I think it's a fool's errand to chase that goal," explains Knutzen. "I think we live in communities, human beings are meant to live, and trade and work together. I think self-reliance is okay, in other words, knowing how to do things."
Knutzen and Coyne share their tinkering, DIY and small scale urban agriculture experiments on their blog Root Simple and in their books "The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City" and "Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post Consumer World". They believe in the value of shop classes and old-school home economics (back when you learned how to make things, not shop for things).
For the couple, their true goal with all of this self-reliance is freedom to live as they please. By growing their own and canning, pickling, preserving, freezing and baking their own breads and beans, they live frugally. They also only own one car (plus a cargo bike), one cellphone and no tv. "I think a lot of it has to do with our overdriving ambition to be free," explains Coyne, "makes being cheap fun, because it means you can be free".

"What do you expect when you target the President?" This is what an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent allegedly said to the head of a conservative organization that was being audited after calling for the impeachment of then-President Clinton. Recent revelations that IRS agents gave "special scrutiny" to organizations opposed to the current administration's policies suggest that many in the IRS still believe harassing the President's opponents is part of their job.
As troubling as these recent reports are, it would be a grave mistake to think that IRS harassment of opponents of the incumbent President is a modern, or a partisan, phenomenon. As scholar Burton Folsom pointed out in his book New Deal or Raw Deal, IRS agents in the 1930s where essentially "hit squads" against opponents of the New Deal. It is well-known that the administrations of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson used the IRS to silence their critics. One of the articles of impeachment drawn up against Richard Nixon dealt with his use of the IRS to harass his political enemies. Allegations of IRS abuses were common during the Clinton administration, and just this week some of the current administration's defenders recalled that antiwar and progressive groups alleged harassment by the IRS during the Bush presidency.
The bipartisan tradition of using the IRS as a tool to harass political opponents suggests that the problem is deeper than just a few "rogue" IRS agents—or even corruption within one, two, three or many administrations. Instead, the problem lays in the extraordinary power the tax system grants the IRS.
The IRS routinely obtains information about how we earn a living, what investments we make, what we spend on ourselves and our families, and even what charitable and religious organizations we support. Starting next year, the IRS will be collecting personally identifiable health insurance information in order to ensure we are complying with Obamacare's mandates.
The current tax laws even give the IRS power to marginalize any educational, political, or even religious organizations whose goals, beliefs, and values are not favored by the current regime by denying those organizations "tax-free" status. This is the root of the latest scandal involving the IRS.
Considering the type of power the IRS excises over the American people, and the propensity of those who hold power to violate liberty, it is surprising we do not hear about more cases of politically-motivated IRS harassment. As the first US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall said, "The power to tax is the power to destroy" — and who better to destroy than one's political enemies?
The US flourished for over 120 years without an income tax, and our liberty and prosperity will only benefit from getting rid of the current tax system. The federal government will get along just fine without its immoral claim on the fruits of our labor, particularly if the elimination of federal income taxes are accompanied by serious reduction in all areas of spending, starting with the military spending beloved by so many who claim to be opponents of high taxes and big government.
While it is important for Congress to investigate the most recent scandal and ensure all involved are held accountable, we cannot pretend that the problem is a few bad actors. The very purpose of the IRS is to transfer wealth from one group to another while violating our liberties in the process, thus the only way Congress can protect our freedoms is to repeal the income tax and shutter the doors of the IRS once and for all.

Amazing how the more they print fiat, the price of silver is decreasing. Imagine if silver got down to equal par with the silver. Dollar for dollar. If there is 100 trillion dollars fo fiat in circulation and was redemmable in silver, can the above equation work if there was only 1 billion ounces worldwide? that is a ratio of 100,000 to 1. Therefore a one ounce silver coin should be worth 100,000 fiat dollars. Kind of crazy. If a provisional government springs up in an aria of the country and declares all debt based on fiat currency illegal and null en void, what will the rulers do when they can’t rule us economically? If people with no “job” have time instead to grow their own food in yards and vacant lots and devote all of their efforts to providing for themselves and not the “government” what will the “government” do in response? If economies become informal and local, based on value and real wealth, (is this thing useful to me?) how can there be a giant monster of a “government” exploiting everyone for the benefit of a handful of elite in-bred ruling families? "We've been on a roller coaster ride," said Gavin Andresen, chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, which provides much of the core backend development for the currency.
"I expect for the next few years we're going to remain on a roller coaster ride," he said, speaking in front of a packed room of developers, enthusiasts, venture capitalists and other industry players at Bitcoin 2013, the first conference in Silicon Valley to be held on the topic.
Bitcoin is a digital currency that is managed and traded on a peer-to-peer computer network. Often referred to as a form of "crypto-currency," it is intended to be a decentralized form of payment not regulated by any financial institution or governmental body. A variety of online retailers and a growing number of brick-and-mortar stores are now accepting Bitcoins, which can either be purchased through exchanges on the Internet or "mined" by using specialized hardware.

But the growing attention the currency has experienced has come with numerous setbacks as well, in the form of hacks, the shutdown of various exchanges, seizure of accounts and huge selloffs in Bitcoin.
In March, Bitcoins were trading for roughly US$30. Then for a brief period in April its price on the Tokyo-based exchange Mt. Gox skyrocketed to over $230. A couple of days later, its value plummeted to roughly $120 as a massive sell off forced Mt. Gox to temporarily shut down.
This past week, Mt. Gox received a seizure order of its funds by the Department of Homeland Security, triggered by an alleged failure to comply with U.S. financial regulations.
Despite the challenges, Bitcoin's Andresen is not deterred. "We have to be reliable and resilient," he said. The foundation, which currently just has two full-time staff, is looking to hire a Washington lawyer this year to engage with politicians and to help support the currency's growth.
Hundreds of attendees are at the Bitcoin conference, with roughly 20 exhibitors offering a range of Bitcoin-related products such as digital wallets, specialized trading services, and analytical tools.

The US government has never hidden the fact that it is closely watching the virtual currency, which international regulators have thus far failed to keep a lid on.
But while banks and governments have treated the Bitcoin payment system as an "existential threat" to current financial system, Taaki argues that the virtual currency epitomizes real free trade and is a necessary tool to maximize the benefits of a free and open market.

Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired mayor by raising topics including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches. "I'm f---ing right-wing," Ford appears to mutter at one point. "Everyone expects me to be right-wing. I'm just supposed to be this great...." and his voice trails off. At another point he is heard calling Trudeau a "fag." Later in the 90-second video he is asked about the football team and he appears to say (though he is mumbling), "they are just f---ing minorities." The Star had no way to verify the authenticity of the video, which appears to clearly show Ford in a well-lit room. The Star was told the video was shot during the past winter at a house south of Dixon Rd. and Kipling Avenue. What follows is an account based on what both reporters viewed on the video screen. Attempts to reach the mayor and members of his staff to get comment on this story were unsuccessful. The warrant claims Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles did not disclose he operated a financial transfer site when he opened a new bank account for the business. Money transmitting services, according to Gawker, are required to register with the Department of Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen). Mt. The country is used to a scarcity of basic food items such as milk and sugar but even by the country's usual standards the toilet paper shortage has caused considerable consumer panic.
One 70-year-old woman said she had been trying to find toilet rolls for two weeks before locating a few rolls in a supermarket in Caracas. Maria Rojas said: "Even at my age, I've never seen this." Another customer in the same supermarket, Maria Perez, said: "Here there's a shortage of everything - butter, sugar, flour." But, she added: "There always used to be toilet paper."
President Nicolas Maduro, who was chosen by the dying Hugo Chavez to carry on running the country and won April's election, claims it is a conspiracy to destabilise the country.
However, the government has agreed to import an extra 50 million toilet rolls to cope with demand.
His Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming said "excessive demand" for tissue had built up due to a "media campaign that has been generated to disrupt the country." He said monthly consumption of toilet paper was normally 125 million rolls, but current demand "leads us to think that 40 million more are required."
"We will bring in 50 million to show those groups that they won't make us bow down," he said.
Economists say Venezuela's shortages of some consumer products stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government's controls on foreign currency. Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University in the US, said: "State-controlled prices - prices that are set below market-clearing price - always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union."
But economic theory does little to help those down to their last few sheets.
"I've been looking for it for two weeks," Cristina Ramos said at one store. "I was told that they had some here and now I'm in the queue."

He said monthly consumption of toilet paper was normally 125 million rolls, but current demand "leads us to think that 40 million more are required."
"We will bring in 50 million to show those groups that they won't make us bow down," he said.
Economists say Venezuela's shortages of some consumer products stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government's controls on foreign currency. Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University in the US, said: "State-controlled prices - prices that are set below market-clearing price - always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union."
But economic theory does little to help those down to their last few sheets.
"I've been looking for it for two weeks," Cristina Ramos said at one store. "I was told that they had some here and now I'm in the queue."
Many factories operate at half capacity because the currency controls make it hard for them to pay for imported parts and materials.
Breaking Our Previous Financial Agreements to Government
Divorcing ourselves from previous agreements is sometimes necessary to create freedom ahead.
To create
and manifest the new out of the old we sometimes have to break previous
agreements and attachments to be able to move ahead. This comes in many
forms which can be ties with ourselves which release us from old
constraints, ties to others, and ties to the system we are living in.
Contracts with ourselves must often be broken to release us into new
vistas of possibilities which could not materialize should we still stay
as we are.
This can
sometimes feel painful and daunting but often we have to give up what
we’ve got to get what we want, and give up who we were to become who we
really are. A caterpillar breaks its agreement to being a caterpillar or
wouldn’t be able to metamorphose into a beautiful butterfly. But the
caterpillar doesn’t have to resent its previous existence, it can
respect and honor what it was, but must still step away from it into
what it is to become which breaks that previous contract with being a
caterpillar, or it cannot progress.
The Toltec
shamans talked of the importance of being able to break old agreements,
as have other older wisdom traditions. Many people stay in ‘the safety’
of an agreement, which can sometimes be the wisest decision, but not if
it is keeping someone from blossoming into the magnificent physical and
spiritual being which they are, and certainly not if the agreement is
killing their souls, keeping them as slaves and ravaging the planet they
live on.
We are now
breaking our old contract and agreement to the current global system
that we have served for hundreds if not thousands of years. The
interesting point is that we never really signed any formal agreement or
contract, but the massive fear that underpins our society is what
steered us to serve the system as its slaves. This has been deeply
imprinted into our minds and souls, and each generation is born into the
same acceptance of the unseen and unspoken, but very real agreement and
contract which their parents and their parents were born into, of
slavery by fear.
The
importance of being fluid and flexible at this crucial moment in human
history can’t be overstated, and nature shows us again and again that if
it is not prepared to be flexible it will pay a heavy price. The
agreements that we have made with the system currently in place are very
deeply embedded in our souls, and we have believed them to be true for a
very long time, and walked that agreement every day of our lives. We
have become like rabbits in the headlights, paralyzed by the nightmare
we are trapped in. We are absolute hero’s to have endured it so long,
doing our best to stay cheerful in this concentration camp.
I have
talked a lot about how we manifest and create with thought. This is what
is taking place now, as people everywhere have decided to break that
unseen, and unspoken agreement they were funneled into with lies and
deceit. The most important thing for us all as we break these agreements
is to visualize a system beyond it, and believe we can achieve that
vision, without any influence or control from the oligarchs.
When we
break this contract we must be very careful not to make any other
agreements or be tempted to accept any help from the slave masters that
have controlled humanity for thousands of years. We must become
independent. We are not to be seduced back to another prison of slavery
once we are free, and we must be very alert for signs that we are being

The US Government’s attempt to close the conduit ‘Dual’ to usurp the Bitcoin phenomenon, absolutely proves they are committed to keeping everyone enslaved to their own money system only, and their action has made a clear statement to everyone that ‘You are our slaves, you can only use our currency and we will punish anyone who tries to leave the prison of debt and slavery that we keep you in for your entire lifetime’. The US governments reaction is yet another whiff of smelling salts to re mind, and re awaken people to the prison they are in, which they were told was freedom and democracy, though of course it is the complete opposite: Imprisonment and slavery.
Bitcoin, the digital, virtual online currency is the canary in the cage, and has shown us that we are indeed prisoners to this system, designed for debt and to trap the people in its lifetime web like a spider does, though the spider is less cruel than the unscrupulous oligarchs, at least the spider lures you into its web, ties you up, rendering you helpless then eats you in a couple of weeks, whereas the ruthless governments who have enslaved humanity, trap people in the web of debt, and keeps them alive feeding off their energy for their whole lives, literally as slaves in their work camp using their currency and nothing else, which they give us then we give it back when we spend it again.

Miller said, "That would be a violation of law and I do not believe that happened." SHOCKING: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Smokes CRACK Caught on Tape
Rob Ford, proud Canadian and Toronto mayor, was caught on tape smoking crack in the ghetto. Ford is famous for his heavy drinking and conservative notions of race and sexual orientation, but crack smoking might be a new low for him. The tape is in the hands of a shady character related to Ford's deceased drug dealer Anthony Smith, who was shot to death in front of a night club two months ago. The tape will go to the highest bidder, and it allegedly shows Ford smoking rock and laughing like a hyena.
(The Star) A cellphone video that appears to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine is being shopped around Toronto by a group of Somali men involved in the drug trade. Two Toronto Star reporters have viewed the video three times. It appears to show Ford in a room, sitting in a chair, wearing a white shirt, top buttons open, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired mayor by raising topics including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches. "I'm f---ing right-wing," Ford appears to mutter at one point. "Everyone expects me to be right-wing. I'm just supposed to be this great...." and his voice trails off. At another point he is heard calling Trudeau a "fag." Later in the 90-second video he is asked about the football team and he appears to say (though he is mumbling), "they are just f---ing minorities." The Star had no way to verify the authenticity of the video, which appears to clearly show Ford in a well-lit room. The Star was told the video was shot during the past winter at a house south of Dixon Rd. and Kipling Avenue. What follows is an account based on what both reporters viewed on the video screen. Attempts to reach the mayor and members of his staff to get comment on this story were unsuccessful. A lawyer retained by Ford, Dennis Morris, said that Thursday evening's publication by the U.S.-based Gawker website of some details related to the video was "false and defamatory." Morris told the Star that by viewing any video it is impossible to tell what a person is doing. "How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking?" Morris said.

Four decades ago, the Nixon administration attempted to block The New York Times from publishing a secret history of the Vietnam War leaked to the newspaper by whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. Two days after the Times first published excerpts of what became known as the "Pentagon Papers," the Nixon government asked for and received a Supreme Court injunction against the newspaper, arguing that publication of the documents posed a "grave and immediate danger to the security of the United States." We speak to James Goodale, the general counsel at The New York Times during the Pentagon Papers crackdown. Goodale is a leading legal expert on the First Amendment and has just published a new book, "Fighting for the Press: The Inside Story of the Pentagon Papers and Other Battles." Goodale said he wrote book in part because of the work of Julian Assange of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, and how he is likely being targeted by the U.S. government in an ongoing grand jury probe. "My book is meant to be a clarion call to the journalist community. Wake up! There's danger out there," Goodale says. "You may not like Assange . But wake up! Rachel Maddow Reveals More Scandalous Details About IRS Tea Party Targeting
5/16/13 - Rachel Maddow tonight highlighted another potential problem in the growing IRS targeting scandal plaguing the Obama administration this week. The tax-collecting agency provided private tax information about several conservative groups, including ones whose applications had not been fully processed yet, to the website ProPublica. Maddow said that strictly speaking, this was illegal, and will only make things worse for the IRS.
Maddow claimed that the Tea Party now suddently "wants to be back on the wings of the IRS scandal," and said that things are awkward politically because essentially everyone else agrees with them on this scandal. She acknowledged the "improper scrutiny" being given to conservatives groups that seemingly eluded their liberal counterparts.
Maddow highlighted how the same IRS Cincinatti office involved in the targeting scandal released documents to ProPublica for the site's series of posts on groups misleading the IRS about their political activities. Documents were provided for a number of conservative groups, even from nine that were not approved yet by the IRS, which is technically illegal because "it's supposed to be secret" if an application has not been approved.
When ProPublica attempted to find out why exactly they were given the documents, Maddow said the IRS's response was basically "We shouldn't have done that!" She admitted that the agency "screwed up here" and could end up making its level of scrutiny worse after this week.
