In the first half of the program, George Noory welcomed Butch Witkowski, founder and director of the UFO Research Center of Pennsylvania, for a discussion on strange disappearances and other unusual cases he has investigated. Witkowski conservatively estimated that between 40,000 to 47,000 people vanish without a trace every year in the United States. He agreed with the suggestion that some of these disappearances could involve victims falling into interdimensional portals or being abducted by UFOs.
Witkowski talked at some length about the case of Todd Sees, who was purportedly abducted and murdered by aliens in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. A UFO was sighted near Sees' home the night of his disappearance and two fishermen reported what looked like a person being pulled up into a light beam, Witkowski revealed. It took almost three years just to get the autopsy/toxicology report, he explained, noting that other details about Sees' life were inexplicably absent from official records. "Somebody is really going to a lot of trouble to hide the information on this guy," Witkowski commented. Two other reports of a light beam shining down over the same route have since been reported, he added.
Witkowski also shared details of an investigation he assisted at a haunted home in Pennsylvania. The couple claimed that a light in their room turned on by itself and that their daughter felt a presence in her room at night, he said. While they were investigating the house, the couple's young son found a female talking doll sealed in a box. According to Witkowski, even though the package indicated batteries were not included, the doll said "I see you" one evening in a disturbing male voice. "The house just felt strange to me the minute I walked into the place... like I knew somebody was there that shouldn't have been there," he recalled.

During Open Lines, Troy recounted the evening in June 2009 when he was sitting on a dirt road in Florida and noticed a light moving across the eastern horizon. "A light came out of this thing... like water flowing down a stream," he remembered, adding that it sparkled with colored lights. I'm not sure why this would involve loading it up with passengers and flying it over Ukraine, and I very much doubt Malaysia Airlines would fail to notice it was flying the same aircraft used in MH370. For the record, airline companies keep meticulous aircraft maintenance records due to the stringent demands placed upon them by governments. Jet engines, for example, must be completely overhauled after so many hours of operation. Flight controls, electronics, hydraulics and other systems are also carefully inspected in a strict "hours of operation" basis, which obviously requires airlines to know which aircraft they are inspecting or flying.

But one of the ideas that does raise legitimate question is the photo of the claimed "recovered passports" of MH17 passengers. The answer to this seems to depend on where the missile struck the aircraft. If it struck one of the engines, located under the wings, then it's not really necessary for the main fuselage to have been "burned up" in an explosion. The loss of an entire wing is enough to cause the loss of structural integrity of the aircraft, resulting in a mid-air breakup of the fuselage and possibly "dumping" live passengers into the open atmosphere at 33,000 feet, with their fully intact passports in their pockets or purses.

The flight, from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was carrying 298 people, 154 of them Dutch and 15 crew members, all confirmed to be Malaysian.

There were no survivors from the crash, which left wreckage and bodies scattered across miles of rebel-held territory near the border with Russia.

The Boeing 777 took off from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and was expected to land approximately 13 hours later in Kuala Lumpur.

However, the plane crashed in eastern Ukraine at 1621 local time, in an area that has seen intense fighting between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian separatists in recent months, near the village of Grabovo, some 40km from the Russian border.

The plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres before the crash, leading to claims it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Two U.S. officials said Washington strongly suspected the plane was downed by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile fired by Ukrainian separatists backed by Moscow.

Leaders of the rebels' self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic denied any involvement and said a Ukrainian air force jet had brought down the intercontinental flight.

Russia's Defence Ministry later pointed the finger at Ukrainian ground forces, saying it had picked up radar activity from a Ukrainian missile system south of Donetsk when the airliner was brought down, Russian media reported.

The Ukrainian security council said no missiles had been fired from the armouries of its armed forces.

1. This was a passenger plane flying over rebel territory despite the fact it was well known that pro-Russian rebels had fairly advanced anti-aircraft weaponry, and were using them with increasing success. Alec Luhn, one of the best reporters on the ground covering the conflict, tweeted out that Ukraine authorities allowed flights over the war zone if they were traveling above 7,800 meters; flight MH17 was reportedly shot down at 10,000 meters.

2. In just the past week, rebel antiaircraft missiles have struck at least three Ukrainian air force planes in the region — two Sukhoi-25 fighters, and an An-26 military transport plane. 3. Almost as soon as the plane was downed today, Russian state news agency ITAR-Tass boasted "Donetsk People's Republic militiamen shoot down Ukrainian Air Force An-26". Russian propagandists to turn around and blame it all on the Ukrainians.

5. In 2001, Ukraine's military accidentally shot down a Russian passenger airliner flying over the Black Sea from Tel Aviv to Novorossisk, killing 78 people onboard. After over a week of denials, Ukraine finally admitted responsibility. In 1988, the US Vincennes mistakenly shot down an Iranian passenger plane in the Persian Gulf, killing 290 passengers on board. Stock Market Swindles: A History of Con Artists & Capitalism in America - Crime Drama (2012)

Lou Blonger (May 13, 1849 -- April 20, 1924), born Louis Herbert Belonger, was a Wild West saloonkeeper, gambling-house owner, and mine speculator, but is best known as the kingpin of an extensive ring of confidence tricksters that operated for more than 25 years in Denver, Colorado. His "Million-Dollar Bunco Ring" was brought to justice in a famous trial in 1923.

Blonger's gang set up rooms resembling stock exchanges and betting parlors that were used by several teams to run "big cons". The goal of the con was to convince tourists to put up large sums of cash in order to secure delivery of stock profits or winning bets. The depiction of the "Wire Con" seen in the movie The Sting is a fairly accurate representation of a typical big con.

Blonger had longstanding ties to numerous Denver politicians and law enforcement officials, including the mayor and the chief of police. In 1922, however, District Attorney Philip S. Van Cise bypassed the Denver police and used his own force, funded by donations solicited in secret from local citizens, to arrest 33 con men, including Blonger, and bring the ring to justice.

During the 1920 primary election for Denver district attorney, Blonger approached Republican Party candidate Philip S. Van Cise and offered assistance in the way of campaign contributions and votes. To Blonger's surprise, Van Cise turned down his offer, and after his election, Van Cise called Blonger into his office to warn him that one of his goals would be the eradication of Blonger's gang of con men. Recognizing that the police force was in Blonger's pocket, Van Cise undertook a private investigation underwritten by donations from 31 wealthy benefactors. Over the course of a year, his detectives gathered information and watched the habits and movements of the gang members. Van Cise monitored Blonger's trash, spied on him from a building across the street, and had a Dictaphone installed surreptitiously inside his office (an action that did not require a search warrant at the time). He also allowed a crooked police detective to work inside the district attorney's office, feeding him misleading information to confuse the gang.

In the summer of 1922, Van Cise made it well known he was going on a long fishing vacation to the Rocky Mountains, signaling to the gang members that the heat was off their operation. While the con men plied their trade openly on the streets of Denver, Van Cise and his assistants plotted a huge roundup that required a willing victim to help catch the gang in the act. With incredible good fortune, J. Frank Norfleet showed up in Denver at precisely this moment. Norfleet was a Texas rancher who had previously been scammed twice by other gangs and was on a nationwide manhunt to bring the men who swindled him to justice. Entering the lobby of the Brown Palace Hotel, Norfleet was hooked by unwitting gang members who saw him as an easy mark, and the plan was set in motion.

The posse assembled early on the morning of August 24, 1922: eighteen Colorado Rangers to arrest the gang members and several private citizens to chauffeur them to a holding cell in the basement of the First Universalist Church. Blonger and Duff were among the first to be arrested; eventually 33 gang members were hauled in before news of the raid reached the street, allowing the remainder of the gang to flee.

Although newspapers across the country carried the particulars of the unusual sting, the Denver Post at first declined to print Blonger's name. Co-publisher Harry Tammen was a close friend of Blonger's, but his partner Fred Bonfils ordered the paper's editors to end the embargo and support Van Cise and the prosecution of the "Million-Dollar Bunco Ring". The nickname the papers hung on the gang didn't tell half the story. The con men's total haul was impossible to determine, but in any case was well in excess of a million dollars per year.

Blonger had a host of legal talent at his disposal, not to mention a sympathetic judge or two. His personal lawyer, Thomas Ward, Jr., was a former U.S. district attorney who had argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. While the rest of the gang was represented by lesser names, they all benefited from the roadblocks laid down by the lead lawyers in the conspiracy case. The defense successfully fought to have Van Cise removed from the prosecution of the case on a technicality, but Van Cise considered this a tactical error, since it allowed him to spend more time devising the prosecution's strategy and less time in court. The case proceeded with two special prosecutors, S. Harrison White, former chief justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, and Harry C. Riddle, a former district court judge.

(WSJ) The White House said that Russian President Vladimir Putin noted early reports of the downed Malaysia Airlines passenger plane at the end of a call with President Barack Obama this morning over the latest round of U.S. sanctions on Russia.

The White House said Mr. Obama was briefed on the reports this morning and has directed officials to be in close contact with senior Ukrainian officials. Mr. Obama was traveling to Wilmington, Del., Thursday, to give a speech on transportation infrastructure.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the White House has seen reports of the crash, "but I'm not in a position to confirm any details of those reports." Asked about calling allies about the plane crash, Mr. Earnest said, "The president has not placed any calls like that."
