Future Computing: DNA Hard Drives | Nick Goldman

 Molecular Biologist Nick Goldman and his team at the European Bioinformatics Institute, have created a way to use DNA to store data. “All the information in the world could be encoded and stored in DNA, and it would fit in the back of a SUV,” says Nick Goldman in this video for the World Economic Forum. He explains why DNA is a stable, long term way to store digital information that might otherwise be lost.

On DNA as nature’s hard drive
“DNA is the hard drive, the memory in every cell in every living organism that has the instructions for how to make that cell. It’s a chemical molecule, and is four different kinds of molecules that can be stuck together in a chain, and you can put those four in any order and if you read that back you have a sequence of characters. If you want to think of it like a digital code.”

“We have a big data revolution in genomics. Ten years ago the cost of sequencing a genome of one person or one living organism was about the same as the most expensive house in London. And ten years later, the cost of sequencing one genome was the price of a season ticket to Arsenal football club. The price is plummeting and scientists are doing more and more genome sequencing.”

On hiding a message in DNA
“After scientists have sequenced a genome, they want to keep their data safe - and that’s where I come in - so they send their data via the internet and ask us to store that information. We buy more and more computer servers, and more and more hard disc drives to store this information. And we started to realise all the information we’re storing is about DNA, but DNA itself could be a digital storage medium. We thought maybe we could manipulate some DNA to put a message in there ourselves. Life on earth has used DNA as its hard disc drive for hundreds of millions of years, so maybe we could use it too.”

“We devised an experiment to see if DNA was a good way to store information. We had to decide what would be high value information that you might want to store for a long time in a DNA format? We thought about a .txt file of all of Shakespeare's sonnets, and an .mp3 of Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream”; and because we’re molecular biologists at heart, a .pdf of Watson and Crick’s paper from 1953 describing the helix structure of DNA in living cells. We encoded those and had it made into DNA by the Agilent company in California. And we got back a tiny bit of dust at the bottom of a test tube, and that was the DNA."

On reading DNA
“Can we get the information back out? Yes, we can read DNA easily and cheaply, and we can copy it. But writing it in the first place is very difficult. It takes too long and is very expensive, and this is the rate limiting step. So, you could encode all the information in the world into DNA, but there isn’t enough money on earth to be able to do that.”

“But it’s a good solution for the challenge of creating a long term digital archive. Within a few years all forms of digital media become obsolete. No one on the earth is currently archiving digital information, yet most information is now being created, stored and observed digitally. But how long will memory sticks last, compared with DNA?”

“We’ve looked at mammoth DNA that is 20,000 years old and ancient horses with 700,000 year old DNA sequences that have been successfully read. All you need is somewhere very cold and dry to store it, and as long as we have humans that are technologically advanced, we will be able to read DNA. So, what are we going to store in the long term? Maybe the American presidential records, or where nuclear waste has been dumped, or even our family photographs.”

IS has gone farther than other extremist groups, including al-Qaeda, in its ability to expand into territories and win and keep the support of its sympathizers. It has support throughout the Middle East and elsewhere, and doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon – and that’s where Saudi Arabia comes in, according to the Jamestown Foundation.
“In addition to confronting the incumbent regimes in Iraq and Syria and rival militants and insurgents, the Islamic State has an ambitious set of goals that include challenging Saudi Arabia,” the Foundation says.
IS, it adds, is behaving in a more aggressive manner toward Saudi Arabia.

In an audio statement released last fall, the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi talked of expanding into the “lands of al-Haramein” (two holy places), refusing even to call it by the name Saudi Arabia because IS considers the Saudi royal family unworthy of any recognition. Al-Baghdadi instead highlights Islam’s two holiest sites — Mecca and Medina, and proclaims the appointment of regional governors to represent IS — calling on followers in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere to recognize and follow their leadership.
Al-Baghdadi also issued a call to arms, telling Saudis to attack the country and “their soldiers.”
The IS leader holds Saudi Arabia in such low regard that he calls the country al-Saloul, a derogatory reference to the al-Saud family, and he implored his followers to attack the country’s substantial minority of Shi’a Muslims, adding that the IS flag will soon “fly over Mecca and Medina.”

Bible & End Times -- Coast To Coast AM - March 8, 2015

 In the first half, author and teacher Allan Lokos joined George Noory to discuss the devastating plane crash that put him on the path of helping others come to grips with tragedy and realize that they can indeed move on to find the peace and freedom that will make their lives strong again. He recounted how, in December of 2012, he and his wife were on vacation in Myanmar and their plane crashed during a short flight. When the craft plummeted to the ground, it caught on fire and filled with thick, black smoke from burning fuel. Desperate to flee the harrowing scene, they were forced to dive through an emergency exit which was engulfed in flames. However, Lokos' escape was thwarted when his leg got caught and he was trapped amidst the inferno, suffering third degree burns on thirty percent of his body.

Despite the assessment of numerous doctors that expressed doubts about his chances for survival, Lokos ultimately recovered enough to return to teaching after only five months of treatment for his injuries. In turn, he became inspired to write about his experience as a way of offering hope and guidance for others who have experienced tragedy or trauma in their lives. "In a sense, we all go through crashes throughout our lives," he mused, pointing to divorce, the loss of a loved one, serious illness, financial hardships, and other profound challenges which people may face during their lifetime. Amongst the advice imparted by Lokos is for people to accept difficult situations as a part of life, to avoid blaming themselves for their predicament, and to focus on the fact that "it's going to change for the better."

In the latter half of the program, President of eBible Fellowship Ministries, Chris McCann, detailed the discovery of biblical evidence that indicates October 7th of this year, the final day of the Feast of Tabernacles, could be the physical end of the world. He argued that Harold Camping's end of the world prediction of May 21, 2011 was not an incorrect prophecy because "we've discovered that it was actually Judgment Day as God indicated it would be." To that end, McCann explained that "it was a spiritual judgment rather than a physical judgment" and, thus, the prediction only appeared to be in error since it was not overtly obvious to the world. "The Biblical evidence is that we were correct concerning Judgment Day," he claimed, "regarding the nature of the judgment, we were off."

In light of this assessment, he argued that the term 'Judgment Day' is a misnomer since it is not a single event, but a "prolonged period of time." Based on numerical information contained in the Bible, McCann surmised that this period likely lasts 1,600 days and, therefore, would seem to culminate on 10/7/2015, when the world will literally come to an end. He stressed that this timetable is not based on dreams or visions and, instead, is reliant on biblical insights which were previously hidden by God but are now becoming clearer as Judgment Day nears. Should the world not come to an end on October 7th, McCann's next course of action would be to "keep looking to the Bible" for clues as to when Judgment Day will arrive.

US Arming Ukraine will end in Civil War -- David Lindorff

 US investigative journalist David Lindorff says Washington’s plan to arm Ukraine will result to Moscow’s direct aid to pro-Russian forces and that will end in civil war in the country. “It is certainly correct that Russia will respond by giving even more direct aid to the separatists in the east, which will mean that the situation will deteriorate further into chaos and civil war,” Lindorff told Press TV on Sunday. He made the comments after a top US diplomat announced that the Pentagon will supply lethal arms to Ukraine if “aggression” from the pro-Russian forces persists, but warned that Moscow would easily match the effort by sending more weapons into the country.

Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that the US was already moving to provide the Ukrainian military with non-lethal military assistance. "But if the aggression continues, I think there will be more and more pressure to give them other means to protect themselves," Blinken said. Lindorff also said the Obama administration’s officials are “split” about arming the Ukrainian forces. Some US and European officials are worried that providing lethal weapons to Ukraine would escalate a conflict that has killed about 6,000 people since last April, and drag them into a proxy war with Russia. However, some members of Congress have stepped up pressure on the White House to counter what they see as increased aggression by Moscow.

“We urge you to quickly approve additional efforts to support Ukraine's efforts to defend its sovereign territory, including through the transfer of lethal, defensive weapons systems to the Ukrainian military," read a letter Thursday to President Barack Obama by 11 lawmakers.House Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and top Republicans and Democrats on various House committees signed the letter.Obama’s lack of “overall strategy thus far has done little to reassure our friends and allies in the region," they wrote in the letter. Last month, Obama said his administration was still considering sending lethal aid to Ukraine, saying, "If, in fact, diplomacy fails, what I've asked my team to do is to look at all options."

Asked what Russia would do about the ruling, an advisor to President Putin replied, “There is a war coming in Europe.” Do you really think this ruling matters?”

Life on The Road: converted Budget Van as free camping Home

 At 25 years old, Robin Raindropcatcher had never owned a car and didn’t have a driver’s license, but he dreamed of turning a van into a mobile shelter. When he lost his job and his “dream flat” in Vienna began to weigh on him, he moved in with his mother, passed his driver’s test and began converting a minivan into a new home.

Spending only about 700 euros, Robin used chipboard to create lightweight furniture and foam and reflective foil for insulation. His roughly 50-square-foot shelter now offers: a “living room/bedroom” (a convertible couch becomes a 2 meter long bed), storage cabinets that double as a dining/tea table, a lean kitchen (a propane camping stove) and an even leaner loo (a plastic water bottle for the “small stuff”; trips to cafes for the “big stuff”).

Truth Shock! US Has More Women In Prison Than India, China and Russia Combined

 
According to the International Centre for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States of America. There are 201,200 women in US prisons, representing 8.8 percent of the total American prison population.

China comes a very distant second to the United States with 84,600 female prisoners in total or 5.1% of the overall Chinese prison population. Russia is in third position – 59,000 of its prisoners are women and this comes to 7.8 percent of the total.

Across the world, 625,000 women and children are being held in penal institutions with the female prison population growing on all five continents.

Total Solar Eclipse On March 20th Could Cause Stress Test for Europe's Power Grid

 Transmission system operators have spent months preparing for the eclipse, according to the Brussels, Belgium-based European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity. Plans call for control rooms across the continent to coordinate a response in case of any problems.

"Within 30 minutes the solar power production would decrease from 17.5 gigawatts to 6.2GW and then increase again up to 24.6GW. This means that within 30 minutes the system will have to adapt to a load change of -10GW to +15GW," Patrick Graichen, executive director of the Berlin-based renewable energy think-thank Agora Energiewende, told the Financial Times.

Webster Tarpley -- US Military Training Ukrainian Fascists in Ukraine

He received a BA degree summa cum laude in English and Italian from Princeton University in 1966. 93 Million Americans out of Labor Force says Official Report

 An official report shows nearly one-third of Americans are out of the labor force and this trend has been intensified since President Barrack Obama came to power.

The data is released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which is a unit of the US Department of Labor. The bureau is the main fact-finding agency for the US government. It says a record high of nearly 93-million Americans, aged 16 and higher, are not involved in the work force. That is the highest number since 1978. When President Obama took office in 2009, the number was around 80-million, meaning that over 12-million citizens have left the workforce during his term.
