The protest, one of the biggest in Belgium in recent years, started peacefully, but then reports in the local media emerged of isolated clashes between dockers from the northern port city of Antwerp and security forces. The rally was staged by the country’s three largest unions, who spoke out against austerity and accused Prime Minister Charles Michel of favoring big business at the expense of the workforce. The large turnout at the rally caused disruption of transport on Wednesday, with some hospitals operating at minimum level of service and schools being left without teachers. Wednesday’s rally is likely to be the first in a series of similar protests in autumn. The unions are also planning a rail strike on Friday, which is expected to affect international Eurostar and Thalys rail services. The anti-austerity movement refers to the mobilisation of street protests and grassroots campaigns that has happened across various countries, especially in Europe, since the onset of the worldwide Great Recession.

The French president admits that Europe was slow in understanding that the crises in Middle East and North Africa would affect the continent. Francois Hollande says the only way to deal with the current refugee crisis is a stronger Europe. Speaking to the European parliament, Hollande said they never knew the repercussions of the crises. He called on the E-U to adopt a common asylum policy warning that failure to unite would be the end of Europe. He added that with the influx of refugees and asylum seekers into Europe, the E-U needs to safeguard the continent. He said forming a common European border guard and coast guard is also required to defend the Schengen area. Hollande went on to say that Europe has a duty to resolve the refugee crisis and at the same time defend itself against terrorists and terrorist activities on European soil.
