For a collage artist, destruction is the first necessary step. Your materials need to be broken down before they can be put back together in a new way. Sometimes I stop thinking about it as a dollar bill I just think about it as materials. I have to remind myself sometimes that it is worth money. I have to remind myself what it means to people. It's something people worry about, something people fight over. I think the worth of a dollar bill and the taboo around destroying the dollar bill makes people pay more attention to what it is that I'm doing, than If I was using any other piece of paper. I tend to stick to subject matters that are close to the currency. either issues having to deal with wealth or the division of wealth. Issues of American identity, it's wrapped upon capitalism. It's wrapped up with the American dream. it's basically the single most popular piece of paper on the planet.
Art has reached all-time record sales, yet how we value art remains debatable and evolving. Of course, there is the cost of materials to consider—there is labor, and then there is the ever-elusive market value. “Value” in itself is an abstract concept and is highly subjective. Popular among conspiracy theorists is the claim that the Eye of Providence shown atop an unfinished pyramid on the Great Seal of the United States indicates the influence of Freemasonry in the founding of the United States. This was dramatized in the 2004 Disney film National Treasure. However, common Masonic use of the Eye dates to 14 years after the creation of the Great Seal. Furthermore, among the members of the various design committees for the Great Seal, only Benjamin Franklin was a Mason (and his ideas for the seal were not adopted). Indeed, many Masonic organizations have explicitly denied any connection to the creation of the Seal
The United States one-dollar bill ($1) is a denomination of United States currency. The first U.S. President (1789–97), George Washington, painted by Gilbert Stuart, is currently featured on the obverse, while the Great Seal of the United States is featured on the reverse (back). The one-dollar bill has the oldest design of all U.S. currency currently being produced. The design seen today debuted in 1963 when it was first issued as a Federal Reserve Note (previously, one dollar bills were Silver Certificates).
The inclusion of the motto, "In God We Trust," on all currency was required by law in 1955, and first appeared on paper money in 1957.
